People came from all over the island and from Queens, New York City and Brooklyn. It was wonderful to have so many dog owners bring their dogs with them to enjoy the show too. The Long Island Pet Expo that was held from March 6 through March 8th at the Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, had a record-breaking number of attendees and pets adopted this year. The 6th annual event had well over 14,000 attendees in the 2.5day expo. Over 70 pets adopted, the most at any of their shows in the tristate, from local rescue groups that were at the expo. Over 600 owned dogs came with their owners to enjoy the pet friendly event over the weekend. “We were very pleased with the number of adoptions at the expo, especially learning that a few senior dogs were adopted including a 10 year-old dog. That makes me very happy!” said Karen Garetano, co-owner of Family Pet

“Jogging Into Spring” Spring is here! Now that the weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, many runners are coming out of hibernation and hitting the roads. If the change in the weather has motivated you to pick up running again, here are a few pointers that you should keep in mind before you head out the door. Start Slow It is easy to want to pick-up training where you left off before all the snow we got forced you indoors, but you have to be careful not to do too much too soon. A general rule of thumb runners should abide by is increasing your mileage by 10-percent each week. For example, if you run 10 miles one week, you should not run more than 11 miles the following week. The slow progression gives your body time to adjust properly and will prevent injuries. Be Goal Oriented It doesn’t matter if you’re brand new to

running or an accomplished marathoner, setting goals is beneficial in more ways than one. With a clear and achievable goal, you can stay focused, motivated, and it becomes easier to develop a regular running routine. Next, when you achieve your goal, you can brag to all your friends about how great you are. Buy new shoes Running shoes have an average lifespan of 300-500 miles. If you feel like your shoes are approaching that milestone you should treat yourself to a new pair. Our recommendation is to go to a local running store. There you can try on different shoes and the experts there will make sure you are buying the right shoe for your foot type.

Running Makes You Happier Physical exercise, especially running releases endorphins in the brain. Endorphins are known to make a person feel more energetic, more awake, and ultimately happier. Most runners refer to this feeling as a “runner’s high.” Some runners comment that they don’t feel good about their day until they get a run in. While running gets you moving, keep in mind that everyone progresses at their own rate; if you feel sore one day it is better to take a day off and rest then push yourself. Only you know your own body and how much it can take. Running and Injuries Most running injuries are lower body injuries. One source of many lower body injuries is a weak Gluteus Medius. While many of us are

familiar with the Gluteus Maximus (the main muscle of the buttocks), the Gluteus Medius’ main function is a hip abductor. Hip abduction moves the leg from side to side. A weak Gluteus Medius can lead to other injuries, most commonly ankle inversion and knee injuries such as tendonitis, IT band syndrome, and worse case, an ACL or MCL tear. Since the body is remarkable in that it can adapt to an increase in training, it is very important to use a gradual, progressive exercise program. If you do suffer an injury, physical therapy can help. Our licensed therapists are well educated and skilled specifically in methods of rehabilitation and can help to relieve pain, promote healing and restore function and movement. (APDA) is hard at work in Suffolk County helping to “Ease the Burden and Find the Cure.” Founded more than 53 years ago, the APDA continues to help those affected by this disease. The American Parkinson Disease Association Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County offers support groups, educational events, literature and referrals to those afflicted with Parkinson Disease. “Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted and their families” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral

Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure. More research is needed,” she said. Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement, difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and tremors . While the disease typically affects men and women over 60 years old , it is increasingly affecting people in their 20’s through 50’s. There are

approximately 1.5 million Americans who are living with Parkinson Disease. April 11th marks the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who first recognized the disease now named for him. Making A Difference The Long Island based credit union NEFCU announced today the 2015 recipients of its annual Making A Difference college scholarship program, granting a total of $12,500 to 10 local college students. The scholarship program recognizes students currently enrolled at accredited universities, colleges and community colleges who have succeeded in both their classrooms and communities. Those eligible for the scholarships must be members of NEFCU or related to a member. Since the establishment of the Making A Difference scholarship program, over 10 years ago, students have been awarded over $1,000,000 in grants. “NEFCU is proud to continue the tradition of offering a scholarship program for our members

and their families. We believe that investing in education produces great returns,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “This year’s scholarship recipients are all very bright, well-rounded individuals and we congratulate them for their academic achievements.” Through the “Making A Difference” college scholarship program, NEFCU awarded five $1,500 vouchers to undergraduate and graduate students (with a minimum GPA of 3.5), and five $1,000 vouchers to students enrolled at an accredited community college (with at least a 3.0 GPA). HIGH ACHIEVEMENT - Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez joined with Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and Councilman Lindsay Henry to congratulate Dominick J. Fraccalvieri of Babylon Boy Scout Troop I for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout – the highest honor in the organization. For his Eagle Project, Dominick cleared the outdoor senior cafeteria courtyard at Babylon Junior-Senior High School, where he built and installed two picnic tables and sitting benches.

North Babylon School District has been named a 2015 Best Community for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants and the University of Kansas. The district is one of 388 throughout the nation and 110 across New York State to earn the distinction. The Best Communities designation, in its 16th year, recognizes districts that demonstrate exceptional commitment and efforts toward maintaining music education as part of the schools’ core curriculum. Among the several musical highlights the

district has enjoyed this year, several students were named NYSSMA All-State and All-County musicians; the high school’s marching band performed at the Annual Newsday Marching Band festival; the middle school’s marching band was featured in the Babylon Veterans Day Parade; two choir students were invited to perform at the All-Eastern Conference; 48 music students from grades five through 10 performed at the All-County Music Festival; middle school music students performed at the New York State Capitol Building; and one

Junior Islander Honored Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon joined with the Town Board to honor twelve year old Robert Hyde of North Babylon, who was the only resident from the town to make the Junior Islanders hockey team. The Junior Islanders are made up of eleven and twelve year olds from Long Island who are among the best hockey players in the

Babylon Junior-Senior High School marked World Languages week from March 9th-13th with a series of interactive activities. A different language was featured during the weeklong celebration and daily announcements were made either in that dialectal or facts about countries speaking that language were shared. Within the school’s foreign language classes, teachers coordinated spirited

projects correlating to the featured language. Recognizing the benefits of having an early exposure to a foreign language, the high school teachers visited the sixth-grade classes at Babylon Memorial Grade School to host a workshop. Following the theme of the week – “Learn A Foreign Language, Gain A New Perspective” – the group completed an activity called the “Man On The Moon.” The students first
