After completing a close reading of Lord of the Flies, the students were tasked with a final project of creating a board game that detailed the lessons they had learned throughout the unit. Standout members in the North Babylon School District were recognized during the Board of Education’s March meeting for their remarkable work and performances in the arts and athletics. The meeting began with a performance of “We Dance” from the Drama Club’s recent presentation of the play “Once on This Island.” District Director of Arts Dr. Kim Lowenborg-Coyne recognized the cast, crew and pit of the play, and also several art students who have displayed extraordinary skills and work ethic throughout the year. District Athletic Director John Sparacio then acknowledged several student-athletes who have achieved notable accolades in their respective sports, and each honoree received a certificate. Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach then presented Sparacio with a certificate to commemorate the athletic director’s distinction of being named one

Postscript By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I want to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to all those readers who took the time to reach out in the last week to express condolences on the passing of my “Pal,” to relate to the sense of loss, to the closeness felt… but, mostly, to comment on how fortunate I was to share such a special bond with my grandfather and develop so many wonderful memories through the years. It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –
all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect. I think we tend to forget just how meaningful those We shed a happy tear here and connections are from time to there. But, most importantly, time. Only when called upon we remember. We remember to reflect are we reminded those times of our lives fondness, knowing how lucky we are to have such with a close-knit network of people that, one day, these very supporting us. West Babylon Senior High School students Madison Milito and Kassandra Sherwood have been honored for their volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award recognizes those who have volunteered significant amounts of time to serve their communities. It is granted by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Obama. Sherwood volunteers
with the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. She sells raffle tickets at various events, helps out at parties for children with cancer, collects toys at Christmas and stuffs backpacks for the backto-school drive. She also volunteers with the West Babylon Main Street Organization, packing boxes of food to be donated to community members in need. Milito volunteers her time teaching religion to
third- and fourth-graders at Our Lady of Grace Church. She has also been a camp counselor at the church’s Vacation Bible Camp during the summer. The Prudential Spirit of Community Award applauds young people who already are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities.
SCMEA Performers Twenty-six Babylon School District students were selected to perform in the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association’s All-County Festival from March 12th-13th at Half Hollow Hills High School East. This distinction marks them among the
top student-musicians in Suffolk County. Student-musicians were selected based on their musical ability and joined other musicians from surrounding schools for three rehearsals prior to the performance. In addition, at the Division III concert,

junior Maxwell O’Handley received the Laurence Paul Gray Scholarship. This scholarship will pay for his tuition at the USDAN Center for Creative and Performing Arts this summer.

Babylon High School students and DECA members took home numerous awards after competing at the annual New York State Career Conference in Rochester from March 8th-11th. After qualifying at the regional level in January, these students moved on to compete at the state conference against more than 2,000 students from high schools across New York. Jack Corcoran and Michael Logan placed first in New York State in the Travel and Tourism team event. The pair, who also
ranked in the top 10 in role play, test and overall, each received a $1,000 scholarship to Johnson & Wales. Maggie Higgins placed first in New York State in Visual Advertising and Jillian Gaare came in third in the same category. Ryan Cosgro took second place in Restaurant and Food Service Management, also earning top 10 in role play 1, role play 2, test and overall. In addition, the following students received top 10 awards: Agnes Goldin, Quinn LaRock, Scott Zeterberg, Alex Singleton,
Joe Conti, Sophia Sherman, Rachel Camilleri, AJ Alessi, Michael Steffaneta, Olivia Lully and Mollie Walsh. The New York State DECA Honor Society recognized Ryan Cosgro, Jack Corcoran, Michael Logan, Owen McCaffrey and Thomas Rigelhaugpt for three years of service and achievement. Babylon School District was one of approximately 15 chapters in New York State to be recognized with a community service award for its donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Knowledge Shines Babylon Junior-Senior High School 10th-graders showed that games could be both fun and educational during their recent English assignment. After completing a close reading of “Lord of the Flies,” the students were
tasked with a final project of creating a board game that detailed the lessons they had learned throughout the unit. Working in small groups and using their creativity, they invented several different types of games and presented their
finished products to the class. The groups rotated so all students played each game. Their games included questions relating to themes, symbolism, characterization and plot structure.
AUTHORS SHINE - First-graders in Allyson Fitzgerald’s class at Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District held a nonfiction writing celebration on March 9th. animals’ skulls. Ron Gelardi, an educator with the New York State Environmental Conservation, presented a variety of the skulls to students, who analyzed and compared them side-
by-side. Students then asked questions for a truly fascinating supplement to their classroom science lessons.

Four West Babylon Senior High School students and DECA members competed at the annual New York State Career Conference in Rochester from March 8th11th. After qualifying at the regional level in January, these four students moved on to compete at the state
conference against more than 2,000 students from high schools across New York. Natalie Mandich and Cynthia Vargas competed as a team in the Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making event and Emily O’Halloran and Nitin Punn competed in the
Principles of Hospitality and Tourism event. Both O’Halloran and Punn received top 10 medals in their event. DECA is an academic, co-curricular organization with more than 200,000 students nationwide.

West Babylon Senior High School’s Science Olympiad competed at the state competition held at Le Moyne College in Syracuse from March 11th-12th. After successfully ranking in the top 8 percent at the regional level, the West Babylon team placed 27th in the state out of 54 competing teams. Four teams of West Babylon students received medals in their respective events. Trevor Barrett and Eric Donohue placed third in the Write It Do It event. AJ Liles and Daria DelMonico came in fourth place in Bridge Building, and Frankie Volz and Mike Lee won a sixth-place medal in Forensics. Kelsie Gering and Alex Barrett placed ninth in the Remote Sensing event.
