The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.

YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-proﬁt organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community.

YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of ﬁve communities and school districts

(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20. Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. Ireland celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in similar fashion as other countries, but the country offers unique takes on the festivities as well.

The North Babylon Union Free School District is proud to announce that Director of Music and Arts Dr. Kim Löwenborg-Coyne received the Educator of Note Award from the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. North Babylon Board of Education members and administrators celebrated her achievement during the Feb. 17 board of education meeting. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame was created as a place of community that admires and explores Long Island music in all forms. It is dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. Along with Dr. Löwenborg-Coyne, the organization has inducted more than 100 musicians and music industry executives, including Billy Joel, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Run-D.M.C., and The Ramones. Dr. Löwenborg-Coyne started her teaching career in Rockville Centre schools and became the director of music and art programs

for North Babylon in 1996. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in music performance and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Molloy College. She also completed her Masters of Arts in musicology at CW Post, Long Island University and earned her Ph.D. in higher level music education at New York University. She works diligently to acquire grant funds for the district to bring the best programs, cuttingedge technology, quality instruments and education to North Babylon schools. In addition, she consistently seeks to bring culturally diverse residency programs to the district, such as the African Dance residency with teachers from the Harlem School of the Arts, “Dance to Learn and Learn to Dance” with Ballet Long Island and a Steel Pan Orchestra Residency. Dr. Löwenborg-Coyne’s hard work was even more prominent during the pandemic as the district purchased supplies to provide home kits for

students and hosted drive by instrument distribution. Rather than cancelling concerts, Dr. LöwenborgCoyne worked with sound and film engineers to orchestrate drive-in movies that consisted of small, live performances. As a result, the district has seen outdoor theater, singalongs and painting sessions. In addition to her leadership, Dr. LöwenborgCoyne served on the founding committee for LIAA’s Long Island Scholar Artist Awards from 2007 to 2017 and chairs the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Arts in Education Advisory Board. She was also president of Suffolk NYSCAME from 2009 to 2010 and has hosted many NYSSMA Festivals and SCMEA events in her schools. The district is very proud of Dr. Löwenborg-Coyne’s accomplishment and applauds her dedication and tenacity to the North Babylon music and art program.

In fact, it has become one of the most popular days of the year to throw a party and gather with others. So how do people in Ireland — the heart of where St. Patrick’s Day originated — celebrate each March 17th? Should travelers find themselves in Ireland this time of year, here’s what to expect in terms of St. Patrick’s Day commemorations. Since St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday, expect schools, banks and some businesses to be closed around the country and in portions of Northern Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day tourism is big business, so restaurants and pubs likely will be open and may extend their hours. Service Award, presented to a coach who goes above and beyond. Science Olympiad is a national competition that involves schools from all 50 states. With more than 7,800 middle and high schools competing throughout the U.S., Science Olympiad has more than 115,000 students competing annually. Within New York alone, more than 480 teams compete with a total of more than 7,000 students to gain a place at the state level. Teams consist of up to 15 students and compete in 23 events involving all STEM fields.

North Babylon Selected For NY Jets Sports Program

The North Babylon Union Free School District has been selected to participate in the New York Jets High School Girls Flag Football League’s pilot program this spring. High School student-athlete Juleesah Hines, a senior, and district officials represented North Babylon schools and attended a launch event for the program at MetLife Stadium. The New York Jets made the announcement that they are expanding the Jets High School Girls Flag Football League, in honor of National Girls & Women in Sports Day. There will be 16 schools across Long Island in the league. North Babylon is one of eight Suffolk County schools selected for this initiative, which is being sponsored and supported by Nike, the New York Jets, NYSPHSAA and Section 11. During the launch event, a panel of women spoke about their various roles in the NFL and provided positive messages to attendees. In addition,

selected student-athletes were brought on a guided tour to the Jets locker room and were surprised with new Nike uniforms. The program is set to kick off in the spring and will run as an eight team league, where each school will play every other school once for a seven game regular season. Following the announcement, District Director of Physical Education, Health Education, Recreation and Athletics Jason Friesen said the next steps include developing a season based off of the game schedule, appointing two coaches for the team, open up registration and form a team based off the registration. “I am incredibly excited for this new Girls Flag Football endeavor,” he added. “What a tremendous opportunity this is to provide another sport for female High School students in North Babylon! I can’t wait for the Spring 2022 season to begin.”

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an

outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington.
