By: Jon Taylor While winter seems to be making a last big push, it is so wonderful to see our sunsets coming around 7 p.m. - a sure sign that spring is upon us, and we will soon be surrounded by the beauty it brings. Our village Chinese take-out spot has a new name, a new menu, a fresh new look and wonderful, pleasant new people. Asian Yummy has made its debut at 74 Deer Park Avenue, and what a wonderful change! Their new menu includes classic Chinese dishes, as well as a tempting assortment of Thai creations, and, for those of us watching our waist line, some calorie-conscious steamed dishes. Best of all, the food is great! After my first visit, I could not help but go back for more; and after four visits, I have yet
to be disappointed. A musttry are their dumplings, which are made in-house and are just wonderful. Whatever your favorite selection, I am confident they will please your palate. A warm welcome, my new friends! Ferraro’s Liquor has long been a village fixture at 66 West Main. Joining our business community are Connie and Kevin, the new proprietors at Ferraro’s. I couldn’t help but notice that so many folks were saying what wonderful people they are. It speaks volumes when that’s the first observation we hear. Welcome Friends of Greater Port Jefferson, Inc., DBA Welcome Friends
The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need
of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. NEW SCOUTS WELCOMED - On February 17th, Boy Scout Troop 399 welcomed 10 new Scouts from Pack 112 into the troop. The boys received their Arrows of Light, which is earned as the highest award of the Cub Scouts, at their Blue and Gold Ceremony and then bridged over into their new troop. They were then inducted into Troop 399 and joyfully welcomed by leadership and scouts. Good luck and great adventures to those in their scouting careers.

When Life Gives You Lemons Strange as it may seem, I still hope for the best, even though the best, like an interesting piece of mail, so rarely arrives, and even when it does it can be lost so easily. ~ Lemony Snicket ~ The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly
impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the
point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

As part of a new multifaceted initiative designed to continue developing students’ skills in STEAM, the North Babylon School District collaborated with the Heckscher Museum of Art and brought the museum to the classroom. As part of the program, sixth-graders at the middle school created stunning
pieces of art under the leadership of museum educators Joy Weiner and Kristina Schaff, who visited the school to work directly with students, and art teachers Lisa Gregorek and Paul Guadagnino. Following their exploration of mandalas and spinning spirals in art history, students created their own dynamic circular designs
through painting and collage. On March 1st, Heckscher representatives visited the middle school to observe the incredible completed works of art with the students who created them.
