Babylon Village Building Receives Virtual Thyroid Cancer Support Historic Plaque

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Terence McSweeney and Historian Mary Cascone joined with Village of Babylon officials and others to congratulate McDonough PLLC with a Circa Board from the Village of Babylon Historical and Preservation Society for its law office in Babylon Village. Founding Member Matthew T. McDonough, Esq. was joined also joined by Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams and the Historical Society’s Historic Homes Committee members Wayne Horsley

and Gilda Gricka. The Village of Babylon Historical and Preservation Society’s Historic Homes Commitee is dedicated to researching and preserving the history of historic homes and structures in the Village of Babylon. The building that houses the firm’s law offices is known as the Thomas Wood House, Mr. Wood being the earliest known resident. The building was constructed circa 1860, around the same time Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States.

The site has ties to Long Island’s legal community. The property was owned by Alexander McCue and Edgar M. Cullen, both men were founders of the law firm Cullen & Dykman. Mr. McCue went on to serve as the Solicitor of the United States Treasury under President Grover Cleveland and incorporated the New York and Brooklyn Bridge Co.. Mr. Cullen went on to serve as the Chief Judge of New York at the turn of the last century. While Chief Judge, Cullen presided over the impeachment trial of Governor Sulzer.

This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850. It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. After 84 years of being closed, the Schoolhouse was re-opened in November 2013 to educate the community through student field trips, history speaker presentations, historic events and now through The Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse.

After navigating the 360 degree images and taking a short quiz to enforce their learning, students can then explore these additional topics in detail. The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. First introduced in the Village of Lindenhurst, the program has now expanded throughout Babylon where banners will be displayed on decorative lamp posts from Memorial Day to Veterans Day.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions. Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you would like to get involved with The Twilight Wish Foundation, you can! You can become a Twilight Wish Sponsor, which benefits your business and the Foundation’s mission. There are many levels. For more information, contact Cass Forkin at 212.534.0402. After a successful fall season, Girls on the Run is back this spring with both virtual and in-person options for girl empowerment in the Long Island area. Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a nonprofit that aims to inspire 3rd- to 8th-grade girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident through running and other physical activity. Each GOTR practice is led by trained volunteers who teach important life lessons such as standing up for oneself, setting and achieving goals, and managing emotions. This past fall Girls on the Run quickly adapted its research-based curriculum and engaging programming to serve girls in the community amidst the global pandemic. Practices are already held outdoors. At practices, participants and coaches maintain social distance and utilize extra sanitation materials. On bad weather days, rain dates or virtual lessons that mirror the in-person lessons can be used if necessary. More than 100 girls participated in the fall and coaches, caregivers, and Girls on the Run staff were all inspired by the results. “This has been such a positive experience for our daughter! We have even noticed a very positive change in her overall attitude and behavior!” –Parent of 4th grade fall season participant. “I wasn’t so sure when my husband signed up our daughter for this program as she’s not very athletic, but I was wrong.
