By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “flashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to

remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble

of complacency before some outside force pops it. They say you should find the positive in everything, make the most of adverse situations, and do at least one thing each day for you… but how many of us do? No, we would rather move robotically through life, obsessing over each obstacle, letting the slightest bump in the road throw us completely off course. One day, today will be the flashback we choose to highlight on some virtual “wall.” Let’s try enjoying it in real time.

With March comes warmer weather, and the expectation of spring. The Babylon Village Arts Council will present several cultural events for the month, beginning with the return of the 2nd Thursday Concert Series on March 13th. This month’s featured group, Miles To Dayton, will blend elements of rock, folk, classical and funk. The M2D recipe is simple: four-part vocal harmony, clever songwriting, improvisational violin and cello, and an infectious rhythm section that stirs up the creative stew. This free concert will be held at the American Legion Hall, 22 Grove Place in Babylon, beginning at 8 p.m. To help our neighbors in need, please bring a canned food donation for a local food pantry. To celebrate Women’s History month, on March 25th, the Film Fest continues at the Babylon Public Library with a screening of 20 Feet from Stardom (2013), directed by Morgan Neville. Backup singers live in a world

that lies just beyond the spotlight. Their voices bring harmony to famous bands, without much public recognition. This free screening begins at 6:45 p.m., with a Q&A led by Steven Kureczko. Visit Astoria Federal Savings to view the works of Joan Sicignano, a Long Island artist who enjoys painting lovely scenes of Long Island plein air. She works in oils, acrylic, and watercolor. She has received numeous awards and her art is in the homes of numerous collectors. Ms. Sicignano has been painting for over thirty years and has been influenced by the 19th century impressionists, as well as many modernday master artists. Her work will be displayed throughout the month of March at Astoria Federal Savings, located at 180 West Main Street in Babylon Village. On March 27th, the Babylon Village Arts Council will honor Wayne Horsley, for his support of the arts in the Babylon community and for his

An original research project created by Babylon High School seniors Emily Brown, Sara Mikovic and Meredith Wardell has advanced to the second round of the Intel-level Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, to be held this March. The students’ project, “The effect of apricot kernels, a proven natural

pesticide, on the growth of Phaseolus vulgarius & Cynodon dactylon,” competed in the elite competition against more than 400 other student projects. Based on their performance at the March 13 LISEF, the students’ project could advance to the Intel Science and Engineering Fair in April. In addition, seniors Jed

Dale and Max Pitagno also entered their project, “The bioremediation of 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane (R-134a) by Scendesmus sp. as facilitated by Titanium Dioxide & activated charcoal.” This was Babylon’s first time competing at this level of LISEF.

Ride for Life, an organization dedicated to fighting ALS, has announced that it will honor St. Joseph’s College (SJC) and Gail Lamberta, Ph.D., associate academic dean and chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at SJC in the Education category at its Annual Ride for Life Kick-Off Fundraiser on Thursday, March 20th, at Lombardi’s on the Sound in Port Jefferson. Established in 1998, Ride for Life is a 150-mile wheelchair and scooter ride from Montauk to Manhattan to benefit those affected by ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Each year, Ride for Life, led by patient and advocate Chris Pendergast, has stopped at SJC on its trek across Long Island where the College’s Recreation Club has provided the riders with lunch and, in certain instances, monetary donations. “I am humbled and honored to receive this award recognizing SJC’s support of Ride for Life,” said Dr. Lamberta. “I was introduced to Chris Pendergast through a dear friend more than 20 years ago and have always admired his dedication, commitment and courage.
