Town Of Babylon Honors Fallen Fire Chief
Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the Babylon Town Board were proud to have recently renamed a section of Croydon Street between Albany Avenue and Great Neck Road in Amityville in memory of
Chief Daryll T. Rollins of the North Amityville Fire Company, who passed away last November just as he was completing his first year as chief. On Tuesday, November 19, 2019, Chief Rollins responded to a residential fire. After
returning home, Rollins was found unresponsive the next morning and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead as a result of cardiac arrest.
TOWN OF BABYLON HONORS FALLEN FIRE CHIEF - The town held a ceremony to officially dedicate “Chief Daryll T. Rollins Way,” where Supervisor Schaffer was joined by Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, fellow local officials, community leaders, members of the North Amityville Fire Company and Chief Rollins’ friends and family. An invocation was delivered by Bishop Walter Willie and Pastor Keith Hayward provided the benediction. Two students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, Sean Moore and Sydney Forbes, led the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem respectively. Also in attendance were Congressman Peter King, New York State Senator John Brooks, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly.

Signs You May Have A Thyroid Problem The thyroid gland plays an essential role in the human body. Babylon Park Ranger Receives Heroism Award
Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilmen Terence McSweeney and DuWayne Gregory recently presented Park Ranger Kenneth Sellers with a Heroism Award for his recent actions after arriving on the scene of a hit-and-run accident in North Babylon. Sellers was on duty as he traveled down Old Deer Park Avenue and came across a badlydamaged vehicle that had been involved in a headon collision. A drunk driver had swerved into oncoming traffic and struck a car driven by Deer Park resident Dennis
Ryan before driving away. Emergency services had not yet arrived as an injured Ryan sat in his disabled vehicle in the middle of the road as cars passed by dangerously close. Park Ranger Sellers stopped his truck in traffic to shield Ryan’s vehicle from the traffic. He then checked on Ryan to assess his injuries and stayed with him until emergency services arrived. “As I sat there, cars just drove right past me, no one stopped, until [Sellers] pulled up,” said Ryan during a ceremony on the steps of Babylon Town Hall. “On behalf of my family, I would like to sincerely thank you for
your kindness in stopping, protecting me and making sure I was alright,” he added. Supervisor Schaffer said he and the rest of the Town Board first learned of the incident when Ryan spoke at a recent Town Board meeting. “As soon as we heard the story, we knew we wanted to recognize Ken,” said Schaffer. “He’s been with us for a long time, and this is just the latest example of his commitment to helping people here in the Town of Babylon,” he added. The Heroism Award is the highest honor given by the Town of Babylon, and Sellers is the first recipient in 2020.

Preparing For Lent And Easter The Christian tradition of Lent is celebrated across the globe by many different denominations of the faith. Lent is a 40day period of sacrifice that begins on Ash Wednesday and culminates with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Lent is designed to help Christians prepare
for Easter through prayer, repentance of sins, almsgiving, denying the ego, and putting and end to sinful practices. Fasting is a component of Lent, as is abstinence from certain behaviors. In fact, in some Western countries, Catholics have been encouraged to adopt forms of abstinence that do not involve food and
drink during Lent. All actions serve as forms of self-denial to mirror the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for his people. Abstaining from alcohol is not mandatory during Lent. That might be traced to ancient times, when wine and other forms of alcohol were safer to drink than pathogen-filled water sources. But many
people now choose to give up alcohol for Lent. Today, fasting is primarily reserved for Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent, including Good Friday. Adherents may opt to fully fast, but most only eschew meat and poultry as a nod to self-denial, opting for seafood and vegetarian fare instead.
While much focus is placed on what is denied during Lent, it can be an ideal time to reflect on what is gained by living a life in which God is first and foremost. Spending more time in prayer and away from trivial distractions can be a way to live a more faithful life during Lent and beyond. In addition, aspiring
to be more Christ-like during Lent can make this special season even more powerful. During Lent, Christians can make a concerted effort to help the poor, work with a charity or volunteer at their church. Lent is a solemn time, but one that can bolster one’s faith.

Florida is considered the “lightning capital” of the United States, so residents of the Sunshine State should always exercise extreme caution upon seeing lightning. Residents of Alabama, Colorado, North
Carolina, and Texas also must be extra cautious when lightning strikes. To stay safe, remember the mantra, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” In addition, the following precautionary measures can help people stay safe when lightning strikes. •Postpone outdoor activities if the weather forecast calls for thunder-storms. You also can use the 30-30 rule. After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Amazing Benefits To Seniors Having Pets Pets bring much joy to the lives they touch. So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog. Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy. The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”
• Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging, according to New York-based psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet. • Improved health: Ongoing research from Harvard Medical School has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, and they may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend and purpose.
