The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program.

Innovative Fitness Programs For Seniors It is important to stay active and eat healthy foods in an effort to promote fitness and well-being. This is especially true for seniors, many of whom lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles as they age. The American Heart Association says adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, and a Harvard University study says that exercise can be an insurance policy for heart health. Mattresses For Music Band, chorus and orchestra students at Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently held a fundraiser that could put one to sleep. They sold mattresses in the auditorium to the

community to raise money for Babylon Schools Friends of the Arts. Thirtytwo mattresses were sold overall, raising an impressive $4,270. The money will go toward sending the students

to this spring’s “Music in the Parks” festival in Hersheypark, where they will get the unique opportunity to perform their repertoire of songs and represent their school on a national stage.

The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Research conducted by Stanford University indicated that MRI scans of people who are deep into a Jane Austen novel showed an increase in blood ﬂowing to areas of the brain that control both cognitive

and executive function. When the brain is working efficiently, it may be less prone to some of the issues that can cause a decline in memory and brain function. Research published in the journal Neurology found frequent brain exercise through reading lowered mental decline by 32 percent. Of course, the benefits of reading extend beyond the physical. Literary fiction can help people be more empathetic. Getting lost in a book and the characters’ stories makes others more relatable. Reading has the potential to help a person understand what people are thinking, offers research published in the journal Science. Picking up a good book also can help a person gain knowledge of new cultures, ideas and history and even improve vocabulary. Picking up a newspaper or magazine, joining a book club or reading with children are just a few of the many ways to improve the mind through reading.

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently announced the installation of a public videophone for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Essentially a webcam, the device allows members of the public to call emergency services, family members and others to use sign language. Councilmen Terry McSweeney and

Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Obesity, headache and back pain are some

additional potential side effects of excessive sleep. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need. However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

North Babylon Students Perform At LISFA Intermediate Festival North Babylon students had the wonderful opportunity to represent the district during LISFA’s Suffolk Intermediate Festival on Jan. 25. Held at Northport High School, several fifth and sixth grade students from across the district participated in the prestigious festival,

including Eren Alptekin, Cynthia Chen and Marilin Chicas from Marion G. Vedder Elementary School; Jason Cusumano and Kendel Wilson from William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School; and Robert Moses Middle School’s sixth grader Melanie Kamalic and eighth grader Andrea

Ramirez. Students were selected based on their exemplary recordings of pieces they performed during a rigorous audition process, as well as teacher nomination. The district congratulates all those who were selected for these prestigious events.
