Quiz Bowl Teams Triumph In Competitions

The North Babylon High School’s Quiz Bowl’s varsity and junior varsity teams are back to competing inperson this year and have found much success in their matches. Earlier this month, both teams competed in their first Regional Quiz Bowl of the year against Copiague High School. The junior varsity team, led by captain Brianna Henriquez, won their match 87-64 and the varsity team, led by captain Victoria Fowler, won their match 185-25. They will be competing in

two more Regional Quiz Bowl matches on Feb. 2 and Feb. 16 with the opportunity to compete in the playoff round in April. This will be their 10th consecutive year if they qualify for the playoff round. In addition to their regional matches, the Quiz Bowl teams have also triumphed in Quiz Bowl tournaments, competing against high school teams from throughout New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. They’ve contested in matches that took place at Smithtown High School,

Kellenberg Memorial High School and Choate Academy in Connecticut. They finished with a 6-4 overall winning record in all three tournaments. In addition, junior Spiros Manolas was one of the top 10 individual scorers at the Smithtown High School Quiz Bowl and received an award. Their next Quiz Bowl tournament will be at Smithtown High School West on Feb. 19. The district is proud of the teams’ success this year and wishes them best of luck in future matches.

The Suffolk Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation recently recognized West Babylon Senior High School seniors Camilo Brown-Pinilla and Brianna Winkler as outstanding physical education students. The annual award is given to seniors who best exemplify exceptional physical performance, scholarship, character and citizenship.

Brown-Pinilla is ranked first in the West Babylon Senior High School Class of 2022. He is a member of the varsity soccer team and captain of the varsity track (winter and spring) teams. He serves as president of the Science Olympiad, Math Science Honor Society, Student Association and orchestra as well as the secretary of the National Honor Society. BrownPinilla plans to attend

Harvard University in the fall to study computational neuroscience. Winkler is a member of the soccer and basketball teams. She also participates in the Athletes Helping Athletes program, DECA and Yearbook Club. Winkler is deciding between SUNY Cortland or SUNY Oswego in the fall to study early childhood education.

Mural Makes Global Connections Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District recently participated in the 2021 Global Traveling Mural project. Every student in the school made their mark on the “We Are Forest Avenue School” mural. This is Forest Avenue’s first year participating in the traveling mural project. The school chose a theme that best represents them: Long Islanders, diverse, trustworthy, respectful, proud, fair, responsible, perseverant, good citizens and caring. Each of the

10 pillars are sprinkled with additional symbols as well as unique and special qualities that are found at Forest Avenue Elementary School. The traveling mural project connects with school communities around the world to create murals of peace, friendship, diversity and love. The theme and design of the mural created is unique to each school. Once registered for the project, Forest Avenue was connected with 10 other schools, libraries or classrooms. The murals

are all created on 10-footlong butcher paper and can be designed using paints, crayons, markers or pencils. When their project was complete, the mural was cut into 10, 1-foot-long pieces and sent to the nine places on their list. Forest Avenue kept one piece of the mural and during the course of several weeks, they received nine additional pieces from around the globe to create their new traveling community mural.

WEST BABYLON’S ROBOTICS TEAM CAPTURES THIRD PLACE - During the week of Jan. 10-14, West Babylon Senior High School’s Team Pandemonium participated in their first remote/virtual FIRST Robotics New York FIRST Tech Challenge Small Business Partnerships of Long Island. West Babylon competed against teams from Jericho, Locust Valley, East Setauket, Syosset, Dix Hills, Huntington Station, Mineola and Seaford with some of these schools fielding more than one team and as many as four teams. West Babylon’s Team Pandemonium took third place. Team members – Eric Lottman, Jessica Donley, Sameer Sayar, Matt Lottman, Sean Donley and Andrew Ralph – worked hard to prepare the robot they built for the traditional FIRST FTC competition.
