Cracking the Classics “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in
the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me
along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. Centro Cultural Hispano ~ Oyster Bay www.cchoben.org This non-profit works towards the educational, social and economic development of the Hispanic community of Oyster Bay, East Norwich and surrounding areas. They are seeking volunteers to help students at their after-school program from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Oyster Bay. For most of these students, English is not the first language spoken at home and, as a result, their parents do not understand English sufficiently enough to help them with their schoolwork. By: Jon Taylor While I was not able to attend, I have spoken to a number of people who attended the “Coffee & Conversation” session with Mayor Scordino at Village Hall. It was a very helpful and informative meeting, giving residents and business people the opportunity to speak with the mayor on many topics in an informal and relaxed setting. Each person I spoke with felt that these meetings served to bolster the strong sense of community we enjoy in Babylon Village. Mayor Scordino plans to hold these sessions on a quarterly basis. Be sure to “like” the Village of Babylon Facebook page to stay abreast of these meetings and other great information on events and new developments that affect our village.
It turns out that the new salon on the corner of Railroad & Deer Park Avenues is the new home of “Hairstories.” Only a stone’s throw from their previous location, the new digs provide a larger and more comfortable facility. It’s great to see our businesses flourish and grow, and we wish them continued success! I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Mark and Dylan Perlman, who are the driving force behind the new Argyle Theatre coming to our village. This is an exciting development for our village on so many levels! Not only will the new theatre enhance the cultural experience available in Babylon Village, it will also infuse the business district with additional opportunities to develop

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Each year, the All Kids Fair brings fun and different reasons for kids and their families to attend their annual event. The April 29th All Kids Fair will continue in this tradition. QuackerJack, the Long Island Ducks’ mascot, will visit to the delight of children across Long Island. In addition, the lovely Alexa Cox, Miss Long Island Teen 2018, will be available for a meet-and-greet. The All Kids Fair is a Long Island “happening” each spring. Since moving to its larger venue, the Hilton Long Island/ Huntington (also known as the Huntington Hilton), the Fair has been able to accommodate a bounce house, petting zoo, and additional vendors and classes, which was enjoyed by 2,500 people this past April. Children will enjoy a large number of additional activities and “freebies,” including face painting, photo booth, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton

Buzzing to Victory Babylon Junior-Senior High School conducted the annual school level Scripps Spelling Bee this January, inviting both seventh- and eighth-grade students to display their vast literary knowledge. Seventh-grader
Matthew Nyman won the competition by correctly spelling the champion word “endeavor” in the final round. The runnerup in this year’s contest was eighth-grade student Astrid Ramirez. As the school winner,
Matthew has qualified to compete in the next round of the competition, which will be held at Hofstra University on February 4th. The district wishes him well in the future of the competition.

Celebrating Catholic Schools Week
Gym Dedication On January 30th, West Babylon Senior High School dedicated one of its gymnasiums to Jim Lynch and the late Frank Taplin – two longtime basketball coaches and faculty members – who had a lasting impact on the school district and its basketball program. In addition to their many years of coaching the boys basketball team, Lynch was a teacher in the district and also served as an
assistant principal at the Senior High School, while Taplin served as a guidance counselor. “To the administration and faculty of West Babylon, thank you for your friendship and support over 40 years,” Lynch said. “You all made West Babylon a wonderful place to work.” The West Babylon Board of Education voted to dedicate the gymnasium to the two individuals
and presented Lynch and Taplin’s family with plaques. Lynch spent 48 years teaching in West Babylon, and both Lynch and Taplin spent 26 years coaching the basketball team. During that time, the team went to the playoffs 19 times, was named league champs four times, and received numerous other honors in their section and state.

Graffiti with Purpose In honor of World Read Aloud Day on Feb. 1, students at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District created a graffiti wall. Students penned their
Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius School kicked off Catholic Schools Week with a special Family Mass, followed by an Open House this past Sunday. The halls were filled with smiling Student Tour Guides proudly ushering interested visitors around the school and sharing everything from artwork to literature projects and 3D Printing fun.
Catholic Schools Week at SSCM has been filled with great activities such as Pre-K through 2nd graders and their “Reading Buddies” from 5th through 8th grade coming for a visit and sharing Pajama Day. Literature Circles continued with 7th and 8th graders presenting their team projects - everything from impressive clay sculptures to fun sock
puppet performances and from film shorts to colorful board games. Earlier this month, students performed a play, reenacting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1955 bus boycott following the arrest of Rosa Parks. As a local (West Babylon) senior citizen resident, I am anxiously awaiting the opening of the newly refurbished Babylon Main Street Theater, purchased by the Perlmans. My earliest recollection of the theater goes back to the late 1950’s, early 1960’s. From the time I was six to about sixteen, my older brother and I spent our summers in Babylon with our grandmother, the owner of a very small bungalow on Old Farmingdale Road. My brother Wayne and I agree it was the best time of our lives. We lived in Queens and so, to us, Babylon seemed like a slice of the “country.” Grandma loved her little “summer home” – no heat, no indoor plumbing, no hot water. I recall her boiling water and placing it in a huge metal pan for our evening baths. I remember chilly nights quickly exiting the house to use the “outhouse.” Wayne and I made many friends during those summer visits. We’d ride our bikes, play ball in the adjacent cemetery, walk to St. Joseph’s RC Church for our Sunday Mass and attend Saturday movies at the Babylon Theater. In my youth, the theater reminded me of a palace. I remember a balcony, drapery and chandeliers. I loved sitting in the balcony, feeling special and grown up! There was a candy store on the corner, and we’d buy our penny candy there for our treat during the movie. When I was 12, I had my first kiss in the balcony. Strange what one remembers! I am now approaching 72 and can still recall the awkwardness and thrill of that first kiss. Hospitality Job Openings Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the county will be supporting the recruiting efforts of Ridgewells, one of the vendors for the U.S. Open Golf Championship, to fill over 550 temporary food service and hospitality jobs at the 118th U.S. Open Championship. To complement its recruiting efforts, the company will be working with St. Joseph’s College through the college’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program as another avenue to generate additional interest. “The ultimate test in golf is returning to Suffolk County, Long Island,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I encourage anyone who is interested in seeking a temporary job or looking to take advantage of the historic experience to apply online as we look this make this another memorable event.” In partnership with the
Suffolk County Department of Labor and the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning, Ridgewells will manage the recruitment, hiring and training of all event staff to support the large scale catering operation at the U.S. Open. A mix of frontand-back of house catering positions are available that include tent supervisors, beverage managers, buffet managers, bartenders and servers, tent chefs, sous chefs, kitchen assistants, action station attendants, dishwashers, and operation helpers. This is the fifth time the championship is being hosted at the historic golf course, which will be held from June 11th – 17th at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. The golf championship is anticipated to generate between $120 million $130 million in economic impact for the region.
This analysis is based on expected weekly attendance of over 200,000 people, which include players, fans, volunteers, vendors and media. There will also be approximately 8,000 hotel rooms booked along with an average of 3,500 temporary job opportunities, with many more to be unveiled in the coming months ahead.
