Years ago, I was roaming the aisles of Costco and picked up a book, titled, 101 Simple Ways to Be Good To Yourself by Donna Watson Ph.D. I’ve been re-reading it ever since. As we grow older and our responsibilities mount, we lose touch with our own needs. Children, spouses, jobs (second jobs), mortgages, car payments, friends in need…the list is endless. The weekdays bleed into each other in a frenetic blur, and on weekends we can barely catch up on sleep, catch our breath and take the kids to their weekend activities. Sometimes “adulting” can make you want to cry “Uncle.” Most likely, you’re running on fumes. If your battle cry of the moment is, “Stop the ride, I wanna get off!” a few small adjustments can recharge a burnt out battery. There are plenty of simple ways to be good to you, which will, in turn, help you be good to others. BREATHE. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, stop right there and breathe. Breathe out all of the air in your body through your mouth. Count to four and

then breathe in through your nose, filling up your abdomen (not your chest). Hold for four seconds. Then, slowly let the air leak out through your mouth as your belly deflates. Repeat. LAUGH. Make YouTube your friend. I personally love the television show, All In The Family. When I need a good laugh, I cue up a full episode on YouTube and laugh myself silly. Laughing is good for the soul. LISTEN. Nothing soothes me like Jazz music. Did you know that brain surgeons play their favorite music in the operating room to take the pressure off? Sometimes, in order to do your best, you have to actually place your attention elsewhere to remain centered and focused. WALK. Take a walk in nature. Walk briskly, look at the grass, the trees and the sky. Breathe in the crisp air, feel your body move and your heart rate slightly increase. Feel your muscles working to move your body. SPEND TIME WITH ANIMALS. If you have a dog or a cat, spend time cuddling and petting your

animal companion. Really take in their energy. If you don’t live with any animals, consider spending time at a dog park to be around animals, or at a local horse stable. Spending time around animals is healing. TAKE A LESSON. You don’t have to make a commitment, time-wise or financially. You can simply take a lesson or two for fun. It will bring a sense of play and adventure to your life. Do it by yourself, or bring a friend or family member along. TAKE A MINI-BREAK. Look for Groupons or off-season deals for short weekend getaways that are within driving distance, and change your environment for 48 hours...or 24 hours if you must. MASSAGE. Everywhere you go now, there are massage and nail spas. Carve out 30 minutes and go for a shoulder rub or a relaxing foot rub... just because. These are just a few of the simple things you can do to be good to yourself. Being good to yourself is like saving money in the bank. You can then spread the wealth to the ones you love.

Easy Vegan Pasta Bolognese By Marilyn Porzio of Dix Hills, New York

What You Will Need

1/2 cup diced portobello mushrooms 1/2 cup sweet green peas 1 24 oz. jar of Ragu Traditional Pasta Sauce (no sugar added variety) 2 tablespoons red wine 1 pinch of salt 1 pinch of black pepper 1 sprinkle of turmeric 1/4 package of Smart Ground meatless soy crumbles 2 heaping tablespoons dairy-free butter substitute 1 box of your favorite pasta

How To Make It Melt butter substitute in a large or medium sized skillet and add in Smart Ground soy crumbles. Mash up and turn crumbles as they brown (about 4 minutes). Turn off heat and set aside.

Pour jar of pasta sauce into a medium or large saucepan, turn on medium heat and stir in diced mushrooms and cooked soy crumbles. Let sauce simmer and then add in tumeric, salt, pepper and red wine; stire altogether, turn heat to low and cover tightly to re-simmer. Boil water and cook pasta for approximately 10 minutes until al dente. (soft, but slightly firm). Rinse and drain pasta and set aside. Steam peas in the microwave or 2-3 minutes and stir peas into sauce. Remove covered sauce from heat. Plate pasta, pour sauce over pasta and enjoy!

Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each Veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters. The Paws of War Service Dog Program relies heavily on the support of their community and volunteers. Through this program they are able to provide service dogs and their training to Veterans in need at no cost, truly providing them with a miracle! A service dog can help combat the daily symptoms of PTSD. They are trained to pick up stress signals and intervene with their owner to direct their focus back to a positive environment. They can also greatly increase the quality of life for someone suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Paws of War trains service dogs to combat the daily issues that someone suffering from TBI has. Each service dog given out is intensely trained before handed off to the Veteran. The lives of many American Heroes have been changed forever because of what this organization has done for them!

Below is a list of more services that Paws of War offers to Veterans in addition to their Service Dog Program: •

Therapy Dog Program - This is a volunteer based program in which certified Therapy Dogs are brought to visit individuals that would benefit from a dog, but unfortunately cannot have one at the time being. War Torn Pups Program - This program has brought back dogs from Afghanistan, Syria and Jordan that Service Members have found while out on tour. Community Education Program - This program allows Paws of War to work with members of their local community. Through this program, they are able to provide a direct connection between Veterans and the younger population. Vets to Vets Medical RV - This mobile RV provides certain medical services for service animals at no cost to Veterans!

Paws of War is growing and has been recognized by national leaders, national press and some of the larger sporting franchises have even partnered with them to sponsor a dog. The men and women that this organization provides services for have dedicated their lives to serving our great country, and Paws of War strives to help them in every way possible!

Beach Employees Save a Life “These are my guardian angels,” said Peter Detroll in the hallway outside of the Babylon Town Board Room. Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board presented Amanda Illig and Rachel D’Amato, two seasonal employees at Cedar Beach, with the Town of Babylon Heroism Award, the highest honor it offers. On August 8, 2018, their quick thinking saved Detroll’s life when they retrieved the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) located in the facility’s office. “I think I speak for everyone here at the Town of Babylon when I say how relieved we are that Peter survived this ordeal, and how proud we are of Rachel and Amanda

for saving his life,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “Our Parks department does an amazing job of hiring special individuals to work at our facilities in the summer and this is a testament to that,” he continued. At the presentation, Detroll thanked Illig and D’Amato and told them that he would not have been able to walk his daughter down the aisle at her recent wedding if it wasn’t for their actions. Detroll was playing volleyball on the beach when he began to experience discomfort and collapsed. Another visitor began to care for Detroll and called out for a defibrillator. That’s when Illig and D’Amato sprang into action and sprinted to retrieve the device from the facility office. The visitor

used the device on Detroll before emergency services arrived and transported him to a local hospital. Medical professionals that cared for Detroll when he arrived predicted he would not have survived the ordeal if the AED was not used on him. “This story is a perfect example of why we keep fully-functioning AEDs at all of our beach and pool facilities,” said Deputy Supervisor Martinez, who is also the chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee. “We strive to provide the safest possible environment for our visitors, and Amanda and Rachel’s actions show that our staff will go above-andbeyond to ensure that,” he added. Chinese New Year Celebration A museum exhibit was set up in the Belmont Elementary School library to display a variety of Chinese artifacts in honor of the Chinese New Year. Behind the display table stood a wall of student artwork that highlighted this Chinese New Year as

the Year of the Pig. In celebration of the holiday, third-grade students were brought to the library to witness these artifacts firsthand and learn about the history of Chinese New Year. This also supports the cultural studies lesson for third-

graders. The event completed with students watching a video of the colossal firework display that takes place in China in celebration of the Chinese New Year.

PRAAT is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was incorporated in 1993 as a community

service project of the Patchogue Rotary Club. Veterinarian Dr. David Roy Hensen founded this

organization with a belief in the therapeutic potential of dogs! PRAAT screens, trains and eval-

uates all dog-handler teams (the volunteer and their dog). Upon a successful completion of the

PRAAT dog-handler team training, teams become eligible to make visits at over 150 of their contracted and insured facilities across Long Island. PRAAT also runs a Doggie Reading Club. This

program is designed to encourage children to improve confidence with their reading skills, while

My Journey With Anxiety

Many of you read my Living Well column each week where I shared what I have learned about living your best life. Like you, my wisdom was hard earned through years of ups and downs, and evolution. One of my major downs was years of suffering with anxiety and panic attacks. Since having my book, Journaling Fame: A memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, come out in the spring of 2017, I have come to learn just how common this is. Forty million Americans suffer with, or have suffered from, various forms of anxiety, depression, OCD and panic attacks. If you are currently struggling with this, know that you are not alone. Below is a small excerpt from my book to give you an introduction to what I went through at my worst: At 3 AM on a July 2012 morning, I lay helpless on an emergency room cot, unable to experience any emotion other than fear and the physical sensations that racked my body. My extreme levels of anxiety did not cease; my body showed me no mercy, perhaps because

my racing mind did not extend that courtesy to my body. I was wrapped in a backless hospital gown and meagerly strewn

blanket that had been nuked in a microwave to keep me warm. I was uncontrollably shaking and shivering from the inside out. I felt aches and pains and my eyes bulged with fright and confusion. “What is happening to me?” I thought. As a chronic baseline anxiety sufferer my entire life, I was in the throes of the worst and most extended episode of acute anxiety I’d ever known. I was experiencing five or six full blown panic attacks per day, generalized anxiety, agoraphobia

and unbearable physical sensations. I feared I was dying, or worse, losing my mind and “going crazy,” a common fear among those with anxiety and panic disorder. It all started when I was seven or eight years old (the age my son is now) and I began to experience intense feelings of worry connected to my physical health. As I reached my preteen years my anxiety grew more ambitious and branched out to what we now commonly refer to as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). But at twelve years old it just kind of felt like this: “Lock the door and check it three times or something bad might happen.” “Touch the wall as you walk by if you want to stay safe.” You might recognize the above as obsessivecompulsive thoughts and behaviors or “magical thinking,” and you may have even experienced something resembling it. By the time I was a teenager I had graduated to the trifecta: anxiety/ panic, OCD and depression. It was also around this time that I discovered

that my well of creativity, intuition and compassion ran deep. The spoken and written word became my solace, and the gift I felt I had to offer the world. My highly sensitized being may have created anxiety, but it also blossomed into an ability to connect with others in a rarefied way, and to express myself as a successful journalist and writer.

This excerpt from my book was also published by the ADAA - Anxiety and Depression Association of America, with the purpose of lending my voice and support to this community. After years of asking, “Why me?” I never again have to ask that question. Through sharing my story in the media, and through speaking engagements, I have turned it around from

Here is a guide that spells out what several different colored roses actually mean: The Red Rose is, of course, the universal symbol of love. The Pink Rose connotes admiration, gentleness, grace and sweetness. The Yellow Rose is bright and cheerful, and makes a statement that someone brightens up your life. The White Rose is a symbol of purity, charm and innocence. The Orange Rose is a

more rare breed of rose and expresses enthusiasm and energy. Lavender Roses up the love ante, and actually mean “Love at first sight.” Peach Roses are an expression of appreciation. The Pale Green Rose (also a rarer color) is a symbol of life and growth, and could be interpreted as “rebirth.” More fun facts about roses: Two intertwined roses mean, “Marry Me,” and are a symbol of unity. Thirteen roses indicate a Secret Admirer. Now that we’ve decoded roses, which color and arrangement best suits your Valentine?

The North Babylon School District is working to prevent students from vaping and using e-cigarettes, through the Suffolk County Department of Health’s “Vape Out! A comprehensive Vaping Prevention Program.”

group activity, and practiced the four “Wow, Really?” questions that help deflect peer pressure. Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach, high school Assistant Principal Jeffrey Raymond and middle school eighth-grade English teacher Kathryn Forman were able to pull together 32 students from the high school to receive this training, which was led by John Martin, supervising public health educator for the Suffolk County Department of Health, and Bonnie Anderson, senior health educator for the Suffolk County Department of Health. Raymond said they selected inspirational and charismatic students who are known to have a positive influence over their friends, to educate them about some of the dangers related to these e-cigarette products and then have them bring this knowledge into the middle school. “Students are tired of hearing it from grownups, teachers, parents and administrators but when a 15-year-old peer comes down there to tell them what to do, they kind of perk up a little bit and then it sometimes has more impact,” Raymond said. “The ultimate goal is to get ahead of it down at the

middle school to provide awareness and education to students before they start experimenting with these things that are being advertised.” High school students are currently working on putting together 30-minute

presentations that they will present to middle school students. They will be refining these presentations in the next few weeks before selecting a date and heading over to the middle school.
