Both courses will be holding all their class sessions at: West Islip Library, 3 Higbie Lane, West Islip, NY 11795, and

is available for adults and youth of 12 years old and older. The basic boating knowledge topics include: • Introduction to Boating • Boating Law • Boat Safety Equipment • Safe Boating Navigation • Boating Problems • Trailering, Storing and Protecting Your boat • Jet Ski Certification Many Boat Insurance companies will offer

discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete this course. This basic boating knowledge course will give you the education required to obtain the SAFE BOATING CERTIFICATE, which is mandatory for Jet Ski operation, regardless of your age. The course materials have been written to be on a 7th grade reading level. Upon completing the test at the end of the three session course, you will receive your

NASBLA approved Laminated United States Power Squadrons America’s Boating Course Certificate, which is recognized nationally and never expires. Registration for the course is required in advance of the course and subject to availabilities. The cost of each of the two courses of your choice is $60. per student – payable in advance through the registration on our site. Pre register is required at boatgsb. org/ABC, and availale on

a first come, first served basis. Registration cutoff is one week prior to the start of each of the two courses. Babylon Animal Shelter Receives Hundreds Of Generous Donations In Memory Of Betty White donations on Long Island and $12.7 million across the country. Iconic actress Betty White passed away just weeks before her milestone 100th birthday, and as a result people on social media wanted to celebrate her and her love of helping animals in need. The Betty White Challenge was created to celebrate her birthday by asking people to donate to an animal shelter of their choice on January 19th. “Thanks to the Betty White Challenge, the Babylon Animal Shelter took in so many donations in such a short period of time, we were amazed and overjoyed. We received chew toys, leashes, collars,

dog food, cat food, treats for dogs, treats for cats, beds for all and so much more. In addition we received nearly $5,000 in checks and gift certificates all of which will go toward the care of the cats and dogs of Babylon,” said Animal Shelter Director Chris Elton. “On behalf of the Babylon Town Board and all of our friends at the Animal Shelter, thank you to the residents of Babylon who once again demonstrated their tremendous generosity by participating in this historical challenge in memory of Betty White,” added Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

FCA envisions a Long Island where a legacy of optimal health, educational success and economic security passes from one generation to the next; each year it serves 30,000 individuals and families in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA runs numerous Children’s Mental Health and Wellness Services programs to help children with mental and/or behavioral health issues and their families, regardless of insurance status and provides Health Home Care Management for recipients of Medicaid in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Services are provided in the home, school and/or other community setting. FCA services utilize a “family-driven” process to create an individualized plan of service for each child and provides access to appropriate services to improve health outcomes and prevent hospitalizations. Family Center Nassau: Family Support services for Nassau residents provided by Family Peer Advocates (FPA) enhance the capacity of families to care for their children who have or are at risk of developing a mental health diagnosis. Youth & Family Integration (YFI): Integrated Mental Health Workers coordinate care for Suffolk County residents including Skill Building and Youth Peer Advocacy for children and Family Peer Support for parents/guardians. Youth Advocacy services are designed to empower youth through a connection with someone who understands what it is like to receive services.

Services (CFTSS): Provides in-home and community based supportive services, including therapy and rehabilitative support services to children who are at risk of being diagnosed or who are formally diagnosed with a mental health diagnosis. The Story Of Cupid What would Valentine’s Day be without images of a golden-tressed boy armed with bow and arrows? The arrows represent feelings of love and desire, and they are aimed and cast at various individuals, causing them to fall deeply in love — or fall out of it. In Roman mythology, the boy is known as Cupid and is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Portrayed as a cherubic and mischievous toddler, this magical boy was purported to be the matchmaker of gods and mortals alike. For students of Greek mythology, Cupid represents Eros, the Greek word for “desire.” He was the son of Aphrodite, Venus’ Hellenistic counterpart, and would play with the hearts of mortals and gods, sometimes leaving

mayhem in his wake. In Greek mythology, Eros was more teenager than bubbly baby, and capitalized on his status as a heartthrob rather than the cherubic status of Roman mythology, according to Richard Martin, a Stanford University professor. While Cupid may have been an adorable imp, some historians say Eros had a darker side, going so far as to describe him as calculating and sinister — forcing the wrong people into lovelorn matches. According to Museum Hack, while Cupid could make people fall in and out of love, he also was once in love himself. In this telling, Cupid is a young man when Venus learns that a mortal girl is born with such great beauty that others start to forget to worship Venus, adoring this girl

instead. Upset about the misdirected adoration toward this mortal, Venus asks Cupid to have the girl, Psyche, fall in love with a monster. Cupid agrees, but once he sees Psyche he “accidentally” hits himself with one of his own golden arrows and falls in love with Psyche. The resulting match does not prove easy, and through a series of unfortunate events, Psyche must prove her love to Cupid and accomplish various tasks to win back his heart. Eventually, Psyche does and achieves goddess status. Cupid has been portrayed both as a young man and child through Renaissance art and beyond. When Valentine’s Day became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, Cupid was linked to Valentine’s

Day celebrations due to his matchmaking abilities. His popularity only continued in the early 20th century,

when Hallmark began to manufacture Valentine’s Day cards featuring Cupid. Cupid helped push

people together in ancient mythology, and he can even be the catalyst for modern day matchmaking as well.
