Remember when you were younger and in school and the teacher made you answer the questions?
Who? What? Where? When? How? And WHY?
When someone we love discovers they have cancer, dies suddenly, or is killed in an auto accident, we never really get the answer to the question WHY? Of course, we can answer the question Who? Our mother, father, spouse, sibling, child, relative or friend. What? Death or terminal illness that will lead to death. When? Is answered by a date and time. How? Is answered by the medical examiner or doctor telling us the heart, brain or lungs stopped functioning. Buy Why? Why now? Why not me? WHY? WHY? WHY? This question cannot be adequately answered because there aren’t any answers that will satisfy us. People torture themselves trying to get to the answer. Why at that exact moment did a single cell in their body decide to multiply uncontrollably? Why at that exact moment did the coronary artery decide to block? Why at the moment did the cerebral artery decide to burst? Why at that exact moment was he on the road when the truck crossed over into his lane? WHY? WHY? WHY? After all I have seen and all I have heard, I have come to the conclusion there isn’t ever going to be a satisfactory answer to the question Why? I am also convinced that the answer to the questions of WHY do exist, just not on this earth. When we rejoin our loved ones, and the questions of Why can be answered, the answers will no longer matter to us.

2020 Bacca & Scala Present Student Art Exhibitions
BACCA, Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, and SCALA, Suffolk County Art Leaders Association, is pleased to announce its eighth year participating together with two art shows. The All-County High School and Senior Scholarship Art Show and the Children’s Art Show, both of which will be held at Old Town Hall, 47 West Main Street in Babylon. The All-County SCALA/ BACCA High School Art Show exhibition will be open through Tuesday, February 11th and will highlight the work of students from grades 9 to 12. Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday
from 10am to 3pm. The second show is the Children’s Art Exhibit of work for grades K-8. This exhibit is open for viewing on Thursday, February 13 through Saturday, March 14th. Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday, 10am to 3pm, but will be closed on Monday, February 17th. The artists’ reception for the Children’s Show will be held on Saturday, March 14th from 12pm to 2pm and is open to the public. The Town of Babylon History Museum at Old Town Hall will also be open during these shows. Come and explore the history of the Town of Babylon, including its

Students Roll Forward With Successful Short Film
North Babylon High School students in Mrs. Nicole Raymond’s advanced film class entered into the 72 Hour Film Competition at Five Towns College in November 2019. The team was assigned to the horror genre and had to write the script, complete filming and edits within 72 hours. After assigning jobs and brainstorming production strategies,
students wrote the script titled “ANYTHING” and gathered costumes, props, and volunteer extras for filming. During the screening and judging ceremonies, the group was nominated for six of the 12 awards, including Best Use of Genre, Best Use of Prop, Best Use of Character, Best Acting, Best Editing and Best Overall. The short film won Best Use of Genre
and Sophia Bonventre won for Best Acting. They will be attending the Hofstra Film Festival on Feb. 29 and the St. John the Baptist Film Festival on April 29. The district congratulates all participating students on this impressive accomplishment and wishes them luck for the upcoming festivals.

National Wear Red Day® February 7, 2020 Brings Awareness To Women’s No. 1 Health Threat: Cardiovascular Disease The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women® movement urges women to take action to reduce their personal risk for cardiovascular disease Long Island, NY, January 16, 2020 — The American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, together with its signature movement, Go Red for Women®, encourages you to ‘wear red and give’ today on National Wear Red Day® to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease: women’s greatest health threat. Cardiovascular disease kills one woman every 80 seconds and takes more lives than all forms of cancer combined. Heart disease and stroke also impact the lives of one in three women – or a third of mothers, sisters and friends – and cardiac events are on the rise in young women in their 20s. While 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented through modest changes to diet and lifestyle, disparities in care for women’s heart and brain health continue to exist. In addition, heart disease and stroke symptoms can present differently in women compared to men. Women also make up less than half of all clinical trial participants globally, with women of color only accounting for three percent. As a result, more research is needed to close gender disparity gaps when it comes to cardiovascular research, treatment and care. Valentines Traditions From Around The World Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday. The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays. Many different traditions can be linked to Valentine’s Day. Here is a list of the interesting ways Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe.
South Korea In South Korea, men get to enjoy the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, as women bestow gifts of chocolate on them. In return, a month later men reciprocate with gifts for women on White Day. South Koreans take Valentine’s Day a step further on Black Day, which falls on April 14. This is an opportunity for all single people who may not have received Valentine’s Day gifts to gather at restaurants and eat a dish called “black noodles” as they celebrate their singleton status. Denmark and Norway These Scandinavian countries didn’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day until recently, but have now put their own spin on the traditions. Men write funny poems or rhyming love notes called Gaekkebrev and send them to women anonymously. Women must try to guess their admirers by counting
dots that are put on the note that correspond to the number of letters in the man’s name. Estonia In Estonia, Valentine’s Day is a day more devoted to friendship than romantic love. It is called “Sõbrapäev” in Estonian, which translates to “Friend’s Day.” Cards and gifts are exchanged among friends. Wales In Wales, Valentine’s Day is not celebrated. Rather, the Welsh commemorate St. Dwynwen’s Day, who is their patron saint of lovers on January 25. It is customary to gift lovespoons, a tradition that likely stems from the practice of sailors carving intricately decorated spoons of wood and presenting them to women they were interested in courting or marrying. Italy Italian lovers celebrate Valentine’s Day in much the same way as Americans. One interesting Valentine’s tradition in Italy is locking padlocks to different structures, which is called
“Lucchetti dell’Amore (locks of love).” Couples attach the locks to bridges, railings and lamp posts, inscribe their names and throw away the key. The action suggests the couple will be together forever.
