“We are extremely grateful to Babylon Supervisor Rich Shaffer and Beautification Director Viscel Moore for working with us to bring the Hometown Heroes Banner Program to all residents of the Town of Babylon”, said Kiwanis Committee Chair Ralph Somma. “Special thanks to “Navy Moms” Carolyn Mormino and Jeanine Walther for their perseverance in getting the Hometown Heroes program to the Town,” he added. Banners cost $200 and display a picture of the service member along with his or her name, branch and years of service. Participants can choose among one of three veterans’ organizations where a portion of the proceeds will be donated.

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. First introduced in the Village of Lindenhurst, the program has now expanded throughout Babylon where banners will be displayed on decorative lamp posts from Memorial Day to Veterans Day.

In addition to the banner, participants will receive a 4x6 print suitable for framing, a digital version for sharing on social media and the opportunity to share their Hometown Heroes’ story to the Lindenhurst Kiwanis website.

The success of the BBCC is made possible primarily through their volunteers. This Coalition has three staff members, so volunteers are so important to them, volunteering not because they have the time, but because they have the heart to do so. Thankfully, BBCC has been able to stay afloat and operating throughout the entire pandemic! The BBCC is currently looking for volunteers to assist with virtual fundraising events. If you have some experience with social media (Facebook and Instagram) and are comfortable posting and boosting ads, please let the coalition know. The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”*

Millie is a mixed breed dog overseas that was rescued by Sergeant Tiann. The soldier has created a long lasting relationship with the dog and is desperate to bring her back to the U.S. with her, now that her deployment is over. She has reached out to Guardians of Rescue for their assistance in helping to make the relocation happen, and they need donations from the public in order to make it happen. “We could make this a reality, but we need financial support from the community,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “There are a lot of logistics and people that have to come together to make this happen and it’s expensive. Let’s all work together to give Sgt Tiann this wonderful gift of ending a tough year on a high note and going into a new year with a smile.” Sergeant Tiann found Millie after she had given birth and was nursing. During that time, someone came along and took all the puppies from the mother, leaving her in a vulnerable position. Sergeant Tiann knew that this would leave the dog in danger, so she wanted to do what she could to help her. Doing all she could for Millie, the two of them formed a relationship based on love and trust. She knows that if she cannot get Millie back to the states to live with her,

The Super Bowl is the culmination of the National Football League season, which traditionally begins in early September and ends in late December or early January. The Super Bowl is one of the most anticipated professional sporting events each year. In most years, around 75,000 fans pack the stadium hosting the game to watch the Super Bowl in person, and millions of people around the globe tune in to view the live simulcast, typically at private parties with friends or alongside fellow fans in sports bars. However, this year Super Bowl watch parties are expected to look quite a bit different. The 2021 Super Bowl may set the record for the smallest crowd in attendance due to the COVID-19 virus. The game is slated to be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., and ESPN reports that the NFL is planning for 20 percent seating capacity at the game. Fans are expected to wear masks and will sit in pods separated by six feet. That capacity

restriction would place around 13,000 fans in the stadium. Super Bowl I, which took place in 1967, was the only Super Bowl in history not to sell out, and that drew a crowd of 61,946 fans. While scoring a ticket to the hottest game in town is often an expensive endeavor, with capacity restrictions for this year’s game it likely will be even more difficult for diehard fans to attend the game in person. Instead, individuals can view the game on CBS or stream it through CBS All Access. Here are some ways to safely celebrate while enjoying the game. • Go cashless. For those who will be at Raymond James Stadium for the big game, cash is not king. The NFL has partnered with Visa to employ cashless payment systems for everything at the venue. In addition, there will be reverse ATMs to turn cash into pre-paid cards to use for purchases. • Order in. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest nights for pizza sales and other takeout. Fans can make it even more so by ordering from their

favorite restaurants — many of which have been hit hard during the pandemic. • Keep gatherings small. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other public health advisory groups continue to maintain that social distancing is the best way to help curb the spread of COVID-19. That means keeping crowds small and separate. If possible, host the party outside, as the virus does not spread as easily outdoors as it does indoors. Encourage guests to dress warmly and provide heat sources, like fire pits or propane heaters. • Host a digital watch party. Video conferencing apps have been used for everything from work to school. Fans can gather online and watch the game simultaneously, but in their own homes. Share the cheers, jeers and some beers over an internet connection. The Super Bowl may be a bit different this year, but fans can still root for their favorite teams and enjoy this often thrilling game.

The closure of restaurants negatively effects every one of our businesses, as it does the mental health of those not being able to get out and socialize. When you look at the metrics and the statistics, you are looking at a less than 2% infection rate in our restaurants- it makes no sense. People are not going to the bars because they close at 10 o’clock, or they are leaving the bars and going into private gatherings where we found out the spread of the virus is really occurring. When you shut down at 10 PM, the bartender and 35 other people are going to house with no social distancing or

masks. If you let us stay open until 1 AM, they will be going home. If you can trust us at 8 PM, I don’t see why you can’t trust us at 11 PM. Bring on the enforcement, come in. check us- we’re all following the rules and all we want is a chance to survive.” Conor Hartnett, owner of Mary Carroll’s, added “It is the job of the restaurant owners to keep you safe in our establishments, and that is what we intend to do. Our businesses are one of the safest places you can be- and the metrics prove that. Keep our restaurants open so we can keep the public safe, and avoid more of the household spread that is so prevalent and driving our infection rate. Let us do our jobs.” New York State Senator Phil Boyle added “We just had a press conference in Albany the other day, where we gave a list of bills we could support to help restaurant and tavern owners at this time. There is nothing more important we could do than to get rid of this 10 PM curfew. Governor Cuomo, expand the hours and let them have another seating. That will save jobs and it will keep our restaurants and taverns open, and it will save New York’s economy.” The overwhelming opinion of restaurant owners is that they can deal with COVID-19 Enforcement and even some of the reduced occupancy requirements, but if the 10 PM curfew continues, it will be too much for these establishments to overcome.

In the “Mariner’s Compass” seminar, Learn how to select and install a compass on your boat, which features are most important and what will work best for you, how to deal with variation between true and magnetic north, and how to adjust your compass to remove most of the deviation caused by local magnetic inﬂuences. is an essential seminar for all boaters. The “Introduction to Navigation” seminar will introduce you to using nautical charts to determine safe routes, creating waypoints in your chart plotter and other GPS devices, and basic electronic navigation and planning. This seminar is a great foundation for advanced courses that teach piloting and celestial navigation skills.
