The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes

a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. WEDDING FLOWERS - Couples are moving away from traditional centerpieces to floral chandeliers and curtains made of blooms for their weddings. Move over bouquets and centerpieces, flowers are taking over weddings in a big way. While wedding trends come and go, flowers will always have a place at the wedding table. The blooms brides and grooms choose and how they decide to display them can say much about the couple’s style. Many modern couples are opting for statement pieces with their flowers to rival the big and bold ideas they’re incorporating elsewhere into their occasions, such as in cakes and clothing. In fact, floral designer Tom Uberuaga says traditional hurricane vase centerpieces are outdated and only focus the eye on the middle of the table. The North Babylon School District has a lot to celebrate, as five students were selected to participate in the LISFA Suffolk Chamber Music Festival on Jan. 4 at Stony Brook University. This is the sixth consecutive year North Babylon has participated in the prestigious LISFA Chamber Festival, as they were one of five districts in the county selected this year. High School student participants included Molly Battaglia, Thomas Bruggemann, Esther Duclair, Ruby Haberman and Heather O’Leary. In addition, several other

students from across the district were also selected to participate in LISFA’s Suffolk Secondary Festival and LISFA’s Suffolk Intermediate Festival. For the Secondary Festival, which was held on Jan. 12 at St. John the Baptist High School, high school student participants included Gavin Aquino, Thomas Bruggemann, Jake Cosentino and Esther Duclair. The Intermediate Festival will be held on Jan. 25 at Northport High School and will include students Eren Alptekin, Cynthia Chen and Marilin Chicas

DeLuca Jr. Elementary School; and Robert Moses Middle School’s sixth grader Melanie Kamalic and eighth grader Andrea Ramirez. Brides and grooms may pour over every detail of their weddings, but few components of the festivities may be as fun, especially for foodies, as deciding what the wedding cake will look like. Couples who want to deliver show-stopping visuals often express some measure of their creativity and personalities through statement wedding cakes. Many couples now eschew the classic three-tiered white cake in favor of a dessert that garners instant attention. Whether the cake is brightly colored or hand-painted, a towering architectural marvel or shimmering in metallics, couples are opting to make a statement with their confections. Apart from clever cake-toppers, here are ways to stand apart when dessert is served. • According to the Perfect Wedding Guide, a rising trend in cakes is to cover a white or naked cake with

translucent glaze tinted in the couple’s wedding colors. This artistic expression can be especially stunning in boho-chic weddings. • Statement tiers also are popular. The cake may be traditional in nearly every way, but couples then set the cake apart by featuring an elaborate design or a different hue in one tier. • Martha Stewart Weddings advises that more than just color can be used to make a statement. Lifelike sugar flowers can really set cakes apart. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) joined today in offering tips to winterize your vehicle and to adjust to driving in more challenging weather conditions. Drivers are also reminded that they can now install snow tires on their vehicles. Under state law, snow tires can be used from October 16 through April 30. “The weather outside does not have to be frightful,” said Mark J.F. Schroeder, DMV Commissioner and GTSC Chair. “By taking steps to prepare your vehicle and yourself, you can drive in winter conditions safely and with confidence.” To make sure your vehicle is ready for the winter, GTSC recommends asking yourself a series of questions about its preparedness: How’s the tread on your vehicles’ tires? Is the recommended amount of antifreeze in the radiator? Is the windshield washer reservoir full? If you have been driving on salted and sanded roads, have you cleaned off your lights and windows?

Will the heater and defroster clear icy and fogged windows? And do you have enough gas just in case you get stuck in slow moving traffic? When you’re ready to start driving, here are some tips to follow: Before moving your car, be certain to remove all snow and ice from it including the top of the vehicle’s roof. Snow and ice flying off your car can cause driving distractions for you and other drivers. It could hit and damage other vehicles or cause a crash. Warm up the car so the defroster has a chance to clear the windows. Turn on your headlights when you turn on your windshield wipers. New York State law makes this mandatory. Do not exceed the speed limit and always adjust your speed to the road conditions. Leave plenty of room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Don’t try to pass or weave in and out of traffic. Even if your vehicle has good traction in ice and snow, you must be prepared to react if other drivers start to slide. Familiarize yourself

with the vehicles you drive before you take them out in inclement weather. Do not drive during ice or snow storms unless it is absolutely necessary. When sleet, freezing rain or snow begin to fall, remember that bridges, ramps and overpasses will freeze first. Be aware that slippery spots may remain after snow is removed. The National Highway Safety Administration also offers winter driving tips. Included in the tips is to be sure your vehicle has the right supplies: Snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper. Abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter, in case your vehicle gets stuck in the snow. Jumper cables, flashlight, and warning devices such as flares and emergency markers. Blankets for protection from the cold. A cell phone with charger, water, food, and any necessary medicine (for longer trips or when driving in lightly populated areas). (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch

and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check— name, signature, address— can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait

on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.

Catering Wedding Menus To Your Guests’ Dietary Needs Gone are the days when wedding reception menus were limited to the one-sizefits-all offerings of meat, chicken or fish. Thanks to modern diets, couples hoping to accommodate guests may need to provide a wide array of food choices. It is impossible to pinpoint an exact number, as there are no definitive surveys classifying all dietary preferences, but there are believed to be around 7.9 million people in the United States who follow a vegetarian-based diet. Of those people, around one million are strictly vegan, according to data in The Economist. In addition, NYU Langone Health says onethird of Americans are trying to avoid gluten. The Gluten Free Agency, which is a consulting group dedicated to helping advertisers, says some nine million people in

Canada are going gluten-free now for medical or personal reasons. Toss in the scores of people with peanut or other allergies and even more caution is needed when designing wedding menus. Savvy couples who have guests’ health and comfort in mind recognize the importance of offering a varied meal plan for wedding-related parties and receptions. The following are some ideas to consider when planning wedding menus. • Consider a buffet-style service. Although couples might like the tradition and flair that a seated/plated meal offers, it creates a much more limited selection of meal options. Buffet-style dinner service often provides couples with multiple choices, and it’s much more likely they can come up with a combination that caters to any food allergies or dietary

restrictions guests may have. • Opt for food stations. In lieu of one long buffet table, a modern approach is to have staffed food stations. Foods as well as their ingredients can be clearly stated on food table placards so guests can make appropriate choices. • Offer alternatives for dessert. Wedding cake can be a challenge to someone with a gluten sensitivity or an egg or a nut allergy. While not every guest indulges in dessert, make it a point to offer an alternative to cake. Perhaps a groom’s cake can be revamped into glutenfree cookie bars or a nut-free trifle. Couples who know in advance which types of dietary restrictions their guests have can work with caterers to devise a menu that suits everyone.

North Babylon Teen Center Renamed

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer joined with members of the Babylon Town Board, fellow local officials and community members to dedicate the Anthony J. Tatti Youth Center in North Babylon, formerly known as the North Babylon Teen Center. Anthony J. Tatti, a lifelong North Babylon resident who has run youth programs in the area for over 45 years, was recognized by the various local officials and community members in attendance at the dedication ceremony, who discussed his various contributions to North Babylon and the surrounding area. “It is a true honor to rename the North Babylon Teen Center for Anthony Tatti, who has done so

much for the North Babylon community and was a driving force behind both the youth center and the programs that it hosts,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “Being that these programs have created cherished memories for many residents and contributed to the development of so many children within the Town of Babylon, it is only right and tremendously fitting that the center be named after him.” Anthony Tatti was integral to the development of the center, leading efforts for it to be built in 2003 and serving as executive director of North Babylon Community Youth Services, the nonprofit organization that is housed there. In this role, Tatti created and maintained

robust recreational and educational programing for children from kindergarten through high school to take part in year-round. Programs offered include camps, teen employment, volunteer services, tutoring and drama programs. Tatti’s other contributions to the community include his continued service as a volunteer for the North Babylon school district as part of the Parent and Youth Activities Committee (PYAC), which created student workshop programs and summer drama classes for middle school students. He also was instrumental in starting Parent University, a series of annual workshops for parenting and parent concerns.

Town Officials Congratulate Longtime Reverend On Retirement Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Terry McSweeney to honor Reverend Randolph Jon Geminder, who is retiring after serving as Rector of

Saint Mary’s Church in Amityville since 1975. In addition to his extensive work at the church, Father Geminder took part in many community service activities and served as Chaplain for Amityville Police and Fire

Departments. A retirement dinner was held for Father Geminder at The Piermont in Babylon, where the town officials thanked him for his service to the community and congratulated him on his retirement.

Almost three out of four consumers surveyed are motivated to improve their finances. To reach their New Year goals, survey respondents say they’ll spend less money to improve their credit score (59%) and pay off credit card debt (58%). To help get you started, Experian Boost ambassador, actor and financial empowerment activist, Hill Harper is providing these money tips: • Create a Financial Blueprint: The first step is to create a blueprint identifying your money, saving and investing goals. Examine your priorities and determine how much money you require to meet your basic needs. From there, you should assess what else you need to be happy and how you can use money as a resource to achieve it. • Assess the Cost of Being You: If your expenses or debt outpace your income, then it’s very difficult to live the best version of your life. Rather than continuously playing catch-up, track your spending to discover new ways to reduce

monthly expenses. Apply those savings towards selfinvestment. • Understand Smart vs. Dumb Money: Not all dollars spent hold the same value. Knowing the difference between “smart” and “dumb” money is key to building a solid financial foundation, according to Harper, who says that “dumb money” is spending on things like credit card interest or items that lose value quickly, whereas “smart money” is spending on things that pay dividends, like an education or home. • Control Your Credit Score: A good credit score can help you gain access to capital with better terms at affordable rates.
