Student Conference. During the weekend program, the students had the chance to attend workshops given by colleges, universities and other theatre professionals, as well as network with approximately 800 high school students from throughout New York State. The students received expert instruction in technical theatre, acting, dance and voice at the workshops. In addition, Julia and Logan performed Almost Paradise from this year’s school musical, Footloose, at the festival of student performances. Lisa Drance, English teacher and theatre director at Babylon High School, served as a presenter at the conference. Ms. Drance taught a workshop on monologue adjudications. She also serves on the NYSTEA’s adjudication team, advocacy committee and curriculum committee. At the end of the conference, for the first year, the NYSTEA awarded student memberships to those in attendance. Babylon students have participated in the conference for 14 years. Babylon alumni who have attended NYSTEA’s Student Conference are pursuing careers in performance or technical theatre. They have attended or are attending The Hartt School, Ithaca College, Mt. Clair College, SUNY Purchase and Wagner College.

Winter Blahs By: Jamie Lynn Ryan January is probably my least favorite month of all. Apologies to those with birthdays or other milestones that fall within these 31 days, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like anything of any real significance happens in January – save for exorbitant snowfall totals, hazardous driving conditions and a general sense of post-holiday “blah-ness.” Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am. I would love nothing more than to find some redeeming quality for this last month. Other than the initial excitement of starting off a new year with a completely
blank slate, it’s been one endless procession of taking down Christmas decorations, attempting to pack away said decorations in some sort of orderly fashion and then realizing how very empty all the rooms now look. Of course, throw in a couple of significant snowfalls, the digging out that comes with it, one especially tedious fourhour commute home from work – and I’m about ready to hibernate with the groundhog until next spring. That’s quite enough of winter as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps if I was fortunate to sit home and admire the snow from a window until it all melted away… but until then, wake
me when the crocuses sprout. Babylon Memorial Grade School fifth-graders helped their third-grade peers better understand the nonfictional resources in their school library’s collection by creating informational commercials with the help of school library media specialist Lisa Lindeman. For the project, the students
worked in small groups to research the 10 areas of the nonfiction section and write scripts to explain each of the items. After finalizing their written pieces, the students worked with Ms. Lindeman to tape their commercials. The final videos, which can be seen on the school’s Vimeo channel, were viewed and
critiqued by the fifth-grade class before being used as teaching tools for the thirdgraders. The exercises allowed the students to refresh their understanding of this section of the library, as well as enhance their collaboration, public speaking, creative and literacy skills.
