When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. One of the biggest lessons that became “real” for Babylon students was that of forgiveness. Basch explained that, despite the immense suffering and trauma the Nazis caused her and so many others, she forgives them. When asked how this could be possible, she replied, “It’s very simple; if I don’t forgive, if I hold a grudge, I only hurt myself.” She also related her experience to the students’ lives by drawing parallels to bullying, in hopes of making them mindful of avoiding bullying behavior in school and beyond. Basch, who has given speeches throughout the country in recent years, emphasized just how powerful they have been in encouraging coexistence, saying, “I have many, many letters from youngsters, thank-you notes, telling me, ‘Mrs. Basch, we’ll make sure it’ll never happen again.’”

Students at Babylon Junior-Senior High School and Babylon Memorial Grade School recently had the honor of listening to Esther Basch, a 91-year-old Holocaust survivor, as she shared her harrowing testimony through a series of age-appropriate assemblies at the schools. Basch was connected to Babylon Union Free School District through her great-grandson Jake Turet, who is a 10th grader in the district. Christopher Ryan, the high school’s director of social studies, jumped at the opportunity to have Basch speak. “It’s one thing to teach about the Holocaust and its history, it’s another thing to hear a firsthand account from someone who actually went through it,” Ryan said. “It makes it real for the students. It enables them to understand and appreciate the topic more than just reading about it in a textbook.”

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes

a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. STUDENTS CELEBRATE DIVERSITY - First graders in Lisa DeGennaro’s class at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District are learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream of everyone being treated equally. The class read “The Crayon Box That Talked” by Shane Derolf. In the story, the crayons did not get along because they all looked different. However, when they worked together, they created a beautiful picture. No Super Bowl Sunday Is Complete Without Chicken Wings Few events generate as much enthusiasm among sports fans and non-sports fans as the Super Bowl. For sports fans who can’t wait to see the National Football League crown a new champion, the game itself is a must-watch event. For those who aren’t fans of the game, Super Bowl Sunday is still a chance to chow down and socialize with friends and family. There’s no right or wrong way to watch the Super Bowl, but some might consider a Super Bowl soiree without chicken wings a major faux pas. For those who want to avoid such a misstep, this recipe for “Virgil’s Smoked Chicken Wings With Blue Cheese Dip” from Neal Corman’s “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) is sure to please.

1 teaspoon cornstarch 4 tablespoons white vinegar 3⁄4 cup hot sauce 1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Return to a simmer, cook for 1 minute, and remove from the heat. 10. Add the cayenne and slowly whisk in the cold butter. Keep warm until serving. 11. Remove the wings from the smoker or grill and put half of them into a bowl, cover with the sauce, and toss. Repeat with the remaining wings and serve on a platter, with the blue cheese dip on the side. Virgil’s Dry Rub Makes 5 to 51⁄2 cups 21⁄2 cups sweet paprika 1 cup granulated sugar 1⁄2 cup Texas-style chili powder 1⁄2 cup minced onion 1⁄2 cup granulated garlic 1⁄4 cup dried parsley flakes 6 tablespoons kosher salt Combine all of the ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk together until completely incorporated. Transfer to a covered bowl with a tight-fitting lid. Store in a cool, dry place.

Each year, millions of people across the globe celebrate a unique holiday that is rich in tradition, spectacle and pageantry. The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is celebrated around the world, even by people who do not trace their heritage back to China. In China, Chinese New Year marks the end of the coldest days on the calendar and welcomes spring with new beginnings and the start of planting season. This spectacular holiday follows the lunar calendar, so there is no set date for the event. The Lunar New Year begins between January 21 and February 20 each year and lasts about 15 days. In 2020, the celebration begins on Saturday, January 25. Fireworks are a large part of Chinese New Year festivals. According to Chinese mythology, a monster named “Nian” would come about every New Year’s Eve, forcing people to hide in their homes. A brave boy fought

Nian off using fireworks, and the following day the public celebrated their survival by setting off even more pyrotechnics. Fireworks became a key component of celebrations from that point forward. Some other traditions associated with the holiday include burning fake paper money and printed gold bars in honor of deceased ancestors. It is believed these offerings will bring fortune and good luck to ancestors in the afterlife. Other customs include cleaning homes thoroughly prior to the dawn of the new year, welcoming family for a big reunion and avoiding activities deemed to be taboo. Such activities may include hair cutting, using scissors and other sharp objects, arguing, saying unlucky words, or breaking things. Children receive money tucked inside of red envelopes to help transfer fortune from elders to younger generations. In addition to red envelopes, homes and decorations are adorned in red. The red

color was purported to be instrumental in scaring away Nian and bringing about luck. Another component of Chinese New Year is the Chinese zodiac. One animal represents the entire year, and there are 12 different animals. The animal a person is born under can help decide his or her career, health and relationship status. 2020 is the year of the Rat. The Rat is associated with wealth and surplus and also is known to be a clever, quick thinker. The Rat is successful, but content to live a peaceful life. The Chinese believe your ben ming nian, or the year of your zodiac animal, is the unluckiest for you because it is a rebirth year and a time when children can easily be taken by evil spirts. Wearing red all year is a defense against this. Those born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008 are all born under the Rat. Chinese New Year is a spectacle that Chinese and non-Chinese alike can behold.

Bonventre and Esther Duclair were commended for their performance in the 2019 All-State Choir earlier this month. Sophia performed as a soprano 1 with the Treble Chorus Ensemble and Esther performed with the Mixed Chorus Ensemble. They were selected based on having scored an A+ on a level six All-State solo. The district was also

proud to present science teacher Gayle Estrada with a certificate of tenure for exhibiting hard work and dedication to her position. Under the direction of Choir Director Tiina Buehler, the North Babylon High School’s Vocal Point Ensemble also serenaded board members and the crowd with festive melodies in honor of the holiday season.
