With the holidays behind us, and having survived the deep freeze, we all are looking forward to a great 2018 in Babylon Village!

With full restoration completed, the bronze World War II memorial plaque was presented to the school board at the December meeting at Babylon High School. The plaque, which honors all those who served and lists those Babylon alumni who gave their lives to protect our freedom, had graced the lobby outside Rowe Hall ever since it was dedicated by the Student Council of the Class of 1946. During those many years, the condition of the plaque had seriously deteriorated. The Sons of the American Legion Squadron at Post 94 undertook the restoration project, and proudly presented the

This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me

that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. with Jamie Lynn Ryan We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. Students enrolled in Criminal Justice and Law and Order classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School learned about the intricacies of the law during a recent in-school lecture with the newly appointed Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini.

While visiting the students, Sini spoke about criminal justice practices in Suffolk, offering the students a firsthand glimpse into the highly sought-after career path. Additionally, he spoke about how he is working diligently alongside county officials and the Suffolk

County Police Department to rid the MS-13 street gang off of Long Island. The students, who are currently in the midst of research projects on gangs, asked Sini questions to further support their work.

Ofﬁcers Sworn In On Tuesday January 9th, Legislator Sunderman had the honor of swearing in the Officers of the Long-Island ABATE. There are fourteen board members, two of which were newly elected members. Following their swearing in we had discussed some concerns such as, how the potholes were going to be handled come spring time and road safety. “Sharing the road with our motorcyclists is important as well as to make sure everyone gets home safe, at

the end of the day. Unsafe roads pose a very real danger to motorcyclists and we have to make sure they are safe for all vehicles; whether they have two wheels or four.” said Sunderman The Long Island ABATE or American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and Education is an organization which strives to provide training and education for motorcycle riders. Additionally, they not only provide bikers rights, but the rights of all motorists. Many

of their members are not bike riders but advocates for those who do ride. Sunderman was so impressed by their organization that he joined as a non-riding member. Meetings are held in Ronkonkoma and Massapequa, in order to accommodate all Long Islanders. Swearing In Ceremony Councilman McSweeney is 14-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and a volunteer firefighter in North Babylon. He has spent the past several years in different roles in his community, most recently as a special assistant to Supervisor Schaffer. Compitello, an Amityville native, worked in Supervisor Schaffer’s office as Deputy Chief of Staff since 2013. She has worked on special projects for the Town in that role, most recently the construction of a specialized respite park for individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s. “Terry, Anthony and Gerry will all be great additions to the Town Board,” said Schaffer at the front of a crowded town board room. “When I started here, I was the youngest member of the Town Board. Now, I’m the oldest, so it will be great to add some new energy and ideas,” he added. The mayors of the three villages within the Town of

Babylon were on-hand to swear-in all five officials. Lindenhurst Village Mayor Michael Lavorata read the Oath of Office to Schaffer, Martinez and Manetta. Amityville Village Mayor Dennis Siry recited it with Compitello, and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino assisted McSweeney. “Everything that we do has the residents’ best interests in mind. We work hard to serve the public as best as we can. Terry, Anthony and Gerry will help us continue to do that and I am excited to see what we can accomplish during this term,” said Martinez. Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, now the senior Town Board member, was also on-hand to welcome her new colleagues. Outgoing members of the Town Board include former Councilmen Tom Donnelly and Lindsay Henry, as well as former Town Clerk Carol Quirk.

On December 1st, 2017, attorney Irving Like was the guest speaker at the Long Island Metro Business Action (LIMBA) meeting, which was held at the Courtyard Marriott in Ronkonkoma, where he emphasized the need to designate the Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) as a World Heritage Site. He said he is fortunate to work with a prominent Catholic college and pointed out that the designations they seek comply with Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si, which calls for action to address the existential threats of climate change and rising sea levels. He also said he will seek outreach from the Vatican for viral support. Among Mr. Like’s arguments for the designation for FINS included the seashore’s proximity to New York City - a world-class city and the seat of the United Nations - and one of the city’s National Heritage Sites (Statue of Liberty) and a National Historical Site (Ellis Island) and its ability to meet the World Heritage Site criteria as established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific

and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). According to UNESCO, to be selected as a World Heritage Site, the nominated site must already be classified as a landmark and unique in some respect as a geographically and historically identifiable place with special cultural or physical significance. Dr. Tanacredi also reminded those in attendance that the horseshoe crab, which has been on this planet for 450 million years, is on the verge of extinction. He pointed out that, in parts of Asia, horseshoe crab is considered a delicacy at many of its restaurants; in the U.S., it is used as bait, and pharmaceutical companies bleed them out and use their blood to develop life-saving medications. According to Dr. Tanacredi, the horseshoe crab population is declining each year at an 8% clip and, if this goes unchecked, the crab will be extinct within 10 years. Three new and two existing Town of Babylon officials took the Oath of Office before the January 2nd, 2018 board meeting at Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez began their new terms after being re-elected in November. Councilman Anthony Manetta and Town Clerk Geraldine Compitello began their first terms in office following their victories. Councilman Terence McSweeney also began his first term in office after being appointed by Supervisor Schaffer to fill the seat left vacant by former Councilman Tom Donnelly. The appointment was unanimously approved by the Town Board at the beginning of the meeting. Councilman Manetta is the former CEO and executive director of the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency (IDA). There, he worked on economic development projects and community outreach.

Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people however suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider, also orphaned or troubled children who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year. Please don’t get me wrong, I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people. But, I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome. And this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February. So if you suffer from a mild case of Post-Holiday Blues, be secure in the knowledge that it is normal and that many people suffer along with you; but also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Chrismas Joy to all year round, because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile! 337376N0117

The Babylon JuniorSenior High School girls varsity team recently finished up an incredibly successful season, acquiring a number of awards and accolades not only for their athletic prowess, but for their dedication to academics as well. Throughout the duration of the fall season, the team was named Section XI Class B Champions, Long Island Class B Champions, a New York State Academic

Team of Distinction and received the League VII Sportsmanship Award, to name a few. The team also garnished an impressive overall team GPA of 99.959, proving that they are just as committed to their studies as they are on the soccer field. Additionally, multiple student-athletes on the team were presented with individual-based awards for their successes both on the field and in the classroom. On January 9th,
