Babylon High School Advanced Placement Government and Government 12R classes had the chance to take

an inside look at the role government plays on the local and state level during a recent visit with New York State Senator Phil

why he chose to get into politics. “I’ve always wanted to do something to help people, which is why I ran for office,” he said. The 30-year career politician also described how elected officials are often best known for few key issues. For Senator Boyle, he noted that his key issues are working to combat the heroin and opioid problem, access to forensic resources and animal welfare. Local Entrepreneur Honored Avid environmentalist, local business owner, and Save The Great South Bay Board Member, Karen Vaccaro Marvin, was recently honored with the 2019 South Shore Estuary Reserve (SSER) Award Stewardship for her outstanding efforts to clean the Great South Bay. Marvin is the owner of South Shore Paddle Boards in Babylon VIllage and was recognized for leading her paddle tribe on dozens of clean ups along the South Shore as well as for her partnerships with other local organizations, such as Operation SPLASH! According to SSER Coordinator Jeremy Campbell, Marvin’s initiatives demonstrate that a single person can spur positive change in protecting and restoring the South Shore Estuary. The Reserve Council Stewardship Award is an annual award that is designed to recognize citizens and organizations that have made significant contributions to protect and restore the South Shore Estuary’s unique and natural environment and maritime traditions. “We have the utmost respect for Karen’s incredible drive and passion to do things beyond her own self interest while always keeping the bigger picture in mind,” said Todd J. Shaw, Save The Great South Bay’s Board President. “Proud, grateful and honored are the words we choose to describe working with her as a valuable Director of Save the Great South Bay.” About Save the Great South Bay, Inc. The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/ Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people however suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider, also orphaned or troubled children who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year. Please don’t get me wrong, I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people, but I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome; and this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February. If you suffer from a mild case of Post-Holiday Blues, be secure in the knowledge that it is normal and that many people suffer along with you; but also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Chrismas Joy to all year round, because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile!

West Babylon School District is piloting an enrichment program for grades 1-5. The program is beginning at Tooker Avenue Elementary School this year with the goal of expanding to each of the elementary schools in the near future. Since the elementary schools revamped to a period schedule a few years ago to allow for dedicated reading/writing, social studies and science periods, there’s now an opportunity for a flex period built into the day.

That period, according to Tooker Avenue Principal Charles Germano, is being used for dedicated intervention services in addition to enrichment opportunities. “We are making sure that each student is getting exactly what they need, whether it be support services in the appropriate areas or academic enrichment to challenge them,” he said. Students are pulled out of their classrooms to work with teacher Mr. DeBiccari for their enrichment lessons, which

focus on hands-on, STEMbased activities as well as advanced reading, writing and math. Students are chosen to participate in the program based on data and teacher recommendations. Students who are receiving tier 1 or 2 support services are also re-evaluated three times per year to make sure each of their specific needs are being met. The overall goal is to have specific growth in each of the subject areas while helping to create stronger students with greater academic success.

Holiday Fun With DECA Volunteers Babylon High School DECA students volunteered their time to help make the Breakfast with Santa event at the Babylon Elementary School a huge success. As they have done many years prior, the DECA stu-

dents helped serve breakfast, play games and collect tickets to see Santa. The event was well attended by students in the district, and a memorable time for children of all ages. DECA is a grade 9-12 cocurricular organization

that stresses community service and business aptitude. This year, the students have helped out at the high school homecoming, Safe Halloween, Old Fashioned Night of Shopping and Breakfast with Santa.

Students made observations about the different plants found growing in the classroom, the fish in the system and took an up-close look at both.

Back at the elementary school, Ms. Moran conducted follow-up lessons to review the material and lead a conversation about the differences between the high school’s aquaponic system and the hydroponic tower garden system located at the elementary school.
