The 2016 GradNation Community Summit organized by Mentor New York, will be held in March on the campus of LIU Post in Brookville, and will include a day of discussion on high school dropout rates and what steps need to be taken

to increase graduation rates for young people. The America’s Promise Alliance was formed in 1997 and headed up by General & Mrs. Colin Powell, to help create successful conditions for all young people to succeed in school and life. Established in 1992, The Mentoring Partnerships of New York and Long Island, now Mentor New York (MNY), is an

affiliate of MENTOR, Inc. MNY helps individuals and groups from different sectors become involved in mentoring opportunities for youth. The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days. I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself. There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels. Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring. Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Unless you favor the four-hour commute home

on Long Island’s slippery roadways with hundreds of your fellow drivers, the backbreaking shoveling and the bone chilling frost, we are holding up quite well thus far. Sure January is the month of new beginnings and attempts to overhaul our lives. What better time to get those finances in order, shred old documents, do some deep cleaning around the house? Of course, none of these things evokes quite the same sense of excitement as celebrations with family and friends, productive though they may be. Such is January. Such is winter. Such is life. As Billy Joel sang, “It’s either sadness or euphoria.” Rarely anything in between.

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently attended the Eagle Court of Honor for Troop 179’s Bryan John Beard, who hails from North Babylon. The ceremony took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Islip, and was attended by officials or their representatives from state and local government, scouts of all ages, and the proud family of Bryan. The path that an Eagle Scout candidate must travel is a challenging one to say the least. In addition to earning a slew of merit badges, each candidate must complete a service project as the capstone requirement. The project must be designed to benefit the community, and everything from its planning to execution

must be orchestrated by the Scout. This is no small task, as projects of this nature more often than not require a variety of material and human resources. Fortunately, Boy Scouting does a fine job of preparing young men for the real world with practical and leadership skills. For his project, Bryan chose to renovate space at St. John the Baptist High School to be used for the “Midnight Run” group. The project involved all kinds of manual labor including, but not limited to, moving furniture, painting walls, and the assembling and installation of shelving units. “Midnight Run” assists the homeless by providing them with food and clothing, and this newly renovated space is surely a welcome

contribution to their cause. “Bryan’s service project will play a vital role in assisting some of our society’s most vulnerable individuals,” said McCaffrey. “It is clear that Bryan is a very talented young man with a big heart. Watch Out For the Post-Holiday “Blues”

Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people, however, suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider also orphaned or troubled children, who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year.

Please don’t get me wrong. I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people. But, I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome. And this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February.

More than 150 students and family members attended North Babylon School District’s first Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) Family Fun Night at Robert Moses Middle School. The event, which was open to all K-8 students and their parents, featured six fun and educational STEAM activity stations. The first station was based on the Hour of Code and featured tutorials about computer programming. At the second station,

students and parents were taught to use a paper and pen to write out code that could then be used to build models out of everyday materials, such as plastic cups. The third station taught participants to code elementary robots using math and ELA skills. Station four featured lessons on construction and coding with building block kits, which participants used to construct models and incorporate motors and sensors which could then be hooked up to computers

and programmed. Station five was comprised of interactive Tangram and words-learning tools; while station six featured invention devices. In addition to the six activity stations, participants took part in 3-D printer demonstrations and observed a humanoid robot. Student volunteers from the National Honor Society and Computer Club led each station activity during the district’s first STEAM and Family Fun night.

Joint Effort

The 8th New York District Knights of Columbus was instrumental in the purchasing and placement of a Nativity Scene at Belmont Lake State Park on the right side of the Christmas Tree just in time for the Christmas Holidays. The district is comprised of St. Joseph the Carpenter Council #14771 in Babylon, Our Lady of Grace Council #11968 in West Babylon, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Council #6556 in

Wyandanch, and Our Lady of the Rosary Council #4228 in Deer Park. The Nativity was a joint effort of all four councils with the cooperation of NYS Council Officers and NYS Parks Department officials. The Nativity was blessed during a brief ceremony by Fr. Stephen H. Donnelly of St. Patrick’s Church in Huntington. Atlantic Auto Mall in West Islip generously donated the needed funds to get this

last minute project off the ground. The 8th District intends to expand on the Nativity Scene in 2016 with a Gloria Angel, additional figures and a wider Manger.
