West Babylon Student-Musicians Selected For SCMEA

Eighteen studentmusicians from the West Babylon School District were chosen to perform at the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association AllCounty honors ensembles. Students are nominated by their music teachers and chosen by a SCMEA selection committee based on their outstanding performance in school music programs, as well as in local NYSSMA solo festivals. The West Babylon student-musicians will join the ranks of the county’s finest orchestra, chorus and band musicians for rehearsals and performances during two weekends in March. Each year, thousands of students are nominated for SCMEA All-County. Due to limitations related to COVID-19, only 90 students per

ensemble were selected for each SCMEA divisional music festival this year. U.S. Flag Donation Honors Alumnus

The North Babylon Union Free School District’s Board of Education were honored to accept a donation of a United States flag that was used to honor North Babylon High School Class of 1966 alumni and Vietnam War veteran Peter Baldwin. This flag was one of many that were flown over the United States Capitol during a ceremony that honored the ultimate sacrifice paid by the 289 fallen members in Mr. Baldwin’s unit. Vietnam War veteran Bruce Flaherty, a surviving member of the unit, strived to have Congress fly a flag for each fallen member of the unit before presenting the flag to the next of kin.

Class of 1966 alumnus James McLaughlin, who is also a Vietnam War veteran, petitioned to have the North Babylon School District become the final resting place for Mr. Baldwin’s flag. In honor of accepting the donation, the district hosted a beautiful ceremony on Dec. 20, where Vietnam War veterans, North Babylon board members and administrators attended. As part of the ceremony, members of the North Babylon High School’s Vocal Point sang the “National Anthem,” student Dan Rizzardi played “Taps” on trumpet and student Haylee Fox read Leroy V. Quintana’s

poem “First Encounter.” North Babylon High School Principal Jonathan Klomp also shared words of appreciation. “Today, we are Peter Baldwin’s next of kin and his flag will be displayed in tribute his sacrifice,” said Mr. Klomp. “We recognize that North Babylon High School cherishes and honors Peter Baldwin, along with the other seven alumni who passed away serving our community and nation in the Vietnam War.” Mr. Baldwin is one of eight North Babylon High School alumni killed in the Vietnam War. His flag will be on display at the North Babylon High School.

The South Shore Audubon Society is beginning now to accept applications for a $1000 award, the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship 2022. College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or

$30,000 RAISED FOR 3 LOCAL BREAST CANCER CHARITIES - The Peconic River Sportsman’s Club (The Club) raised $30,000 for 3 local breast cancer charities including the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC), the North Fork Breast Health Coalition and Lucia’s Angels. The Club, located in Manorville, hosted a beautiful luncheon and presented checks to each organization. The Club has been supporting the local charities for the past 7 years. The funds were raised at the annual Take a Shot at Cancer shooting event in September. In addition, The Club also hosts other shooting events for our ladies currently in treatment for breast or gynecological cancer, giving them a day away from thinking about cancer and treatment. Post 9/11 Veterans To Be Recognized For Their Service

Local not-for-profit organization, Heroes Among Us joins with the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County and local Veterans of Foreign Wars groups, and the Nassau County Executive’s office to build a monument in Eisenhower Park to honor all post 9/11 servicemen and women. The monument will join other memorials in Veterans Memorial Park which honor veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans Monument will be the only monument of its kind on Long Island and one of the first in New York State honoring the courage, dedication, and bravery of United States servicemen and women who fought in military conflicts after 9/11. Over this twenty-year period, 7,000 servicemen and women died in battle and 30,000 post 9/11 veterans have died by suicide. The monument will provide a permanent reminder of their service and provide a much-needed sanctuary and

reflection space for veterans along with their families. “We are excited to have the assistance from our community to properly respect and honor our veterans in building this monument, which we feel was overdue,” said Virginia Cervasio, founder of Heroes Among Us. The estimated cost to build the monument is $150,000 and all the groups involved are currently working to raise the needed funds.
