Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently welcomed representatives from Long Island MMA to Town Hall, where they delivered several boxes of new toys to donate to those in need this holiday season. Joining Supervisor Schaffer and the gym representatives were Town of Babylon employees, as well as Toys for Tots
coordinator Cpl. Danny Foran of the United States Marine Corps. Every year, the Town of Babylon collects hundreds of toys through drop boxes at Town offices. Popular gift items this year included stuffed animals, board games, sports equipment, and toy cars and trucks. The Town of Babylon is grateful to Long Island MMA for once
again supporting such a wonderful cause during the holiday season. Long Island MMA and Fitness Center is located at 590 Smith Street in Farmingdale. It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.
