Happy People Are “Luckier” My cousin Brandon has always been one of the happiest people I know. He has also been one of the luckiest. He has an uncanny ability to find the humor in everything, to play up his successes and brush off his challenges. What I have come to realize is that happier people are luckier. Let’s examine why that is. After all, my cousin has had some less than pleasant events in his life, as we all have. But because he never allowed them to take up too much space, they just seemed to not really matter all that much. These days, he has a beautiful home, a happy marriage, two children and a thriving legal practice. Yes, he ultimately got pretty lucky, but perhaps some of his good fortune can be credited to his happiness. I believe that, much like a radio, the frequency he is continuously emitting is positive. Therefore, an overwhelming amount of positive circumstances must show up as a reflection of the signal he is sending out. Picture those rooftop cell phone and radio towers. He’s dialed his station to

LUCKY FM. Some people tend to stay permanently tuned to WOE IS ME FM - Playing the best complaints all day long with few, if any, commercial interruptions. If I just hit a nerve, that’s okay. Trust me, I’ve been there and I get it. But if your dial is tuned to WOE IS ME FM, it should not come as a surprise that you feel unlucky, or that your antenna is tuned to pick up things during the day that are bound to frustrate, sadden or annoy you. If you were to sit at the computer and type questions into Google, like, “Why is life so hard?” “Why are there bad people in the world?” or “Show me where there are wars, famines, floods and people suffering,” Google could cue up that information for you and provide you with plenty of evidence that life is a scary and unhappy proposition. Conversely, if you were to Google, “Reasons to feel happy,” “Things to love about being alive,” or “Most beautiful places on earth,” Google can show you results that would reinforce life as joyful and pleasant. As a result,

my hypothesis is as follows: Happy people seem lucky because they feel lucky. Either consciously or unconsciously, they have made a decision to keep their antenna tuned to the people, places, circumstances and events that help to reinforce this lucky feeling. In return, this makes them feel happy, which leads to more of the same. It’s a remarkably genius feedback loop. Here are four simple steps you can take today to begin to tune your antenna to a happier station: Smile at people as they pass by. Reminise about positive memories - ones that make you laugh and ones that make you feel blessed. Start a gratitude journal just start with five entries a day if that’s less overwhelming. Read or watch something funny each and every day. You will begin to build up your positive feedback loop and you can add more practices as time goes on. The object of this exercise is to reinforce that happy feeling, re-tune your antenna and one day have someone ask you, “How’d you get so lucky?!”

January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation

Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs.

Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, encourages long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and supports efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation. For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for about 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and are pursuing their personal goals while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. What is often missing is communitybased, grass roots support networks... the inter-connected social fabric that will secure life-long inclusion for individuals with disabilities as the basic human right that it is! This non-profit supports initiatives across Long Island. These initiatives are based in venues that are accessible to the community. They aim to create connections between individuals that need support, people that support them (paid staff ), families and loved ones (circles of support), potential employers and businesses, integrated community resources that promote respect and dignity and service providers that support the philosophy of self direction. Some of their initiatives are Big Time GLEE, which is a grass roots singing group that meets every other week; Crafting Connection, which allows individuals to gather every other week to scrapbook, paint, draw and do more crafty

projects and lastly, Mid-Week Meetups, which help people develop friendships based on shared interests and explore new social and recreational opportunities across Long Island! Some other initiatives this organization supports are Nassau Voice, Speed Friending, Yoga Without Boundaries, Emergency Preparedness Classes and the Nature Experience. Looking to donate? This foundation is collecting donations of crafting supplies to help manage their expenses for the Crafting Connection. Additionally, monetary donations are always welcomed and helpful because they allow this foundation to run more classes and events throughout Long Island. Lastly, they are looking for local venues that can donate some space to their foundation so they can offer more events! Looking to volunteer? The PBS Community Foundation is currently looking for volunteers to assist in leading their Nassau Voice singing group once a month. NOTICE OF INTENT TO REQUEST RELEASE OF FUNDS TOWN OF BABYLON / VILLAGE OF BABYLON COASTAL OUTFALLS Village of Babylon and the Hamlet of West Babylon, Suffolk County The center point of Babylon/West Babylon Community is Babylon Town Hall, 200 East Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst, NY January 9, 2019 Name of Responsible Entity and Recipient: New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR), 38-40 State Street, Hampton Plaza, Albany, NY 12207, in cooperation with the New York State Housing Trust Fund Corporation (HTFC), of the same address. The Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR), an office of HCR’s HTFC, is responsible for the direct administration of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program in New York State. On or about January 17, 2019, the HCR certifying officer will submit a request and certification to HUD for the release of CDBGDR funds appropriated under Public Law 113-2, as amended and as authorized by related laws and policies for the purpose of implementing the New York CDBG-DR Action Plan. Project Description: GOSR proposes to provide CDBG-DR funding ($1,458,000) to design and install in-line backflow valve infrastructure at multiple, coastal, storm water outfalls into the Great South Bay and adjoining canals in order to reduce flooding associated with high tides, which occurred during Superstorm Sandy. Backflow valves will prevent tidal waters from entering the town’s storm drainage system and from backing up through the storm water infrastructure and flooding streets and neighborhoods located south of Montauk Highway in Babylon and West Babylon. Additionally, three bulkheads will be replaced. The Proposed Project is categorically excluded from the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) by HUD regulations at 24 C.F.R. Part 58. An Environmental Review Record (ERR) that documents the environmental determinations for this project is on file and available for review and copying in person. Public Review: Public viewing is available in person Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at the following address: Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, 99 Washington Avenue, Suite 1224, Albany, New York 12260. Shirley, in her capacity as Certifying Officer, consents to accept the jurisdiction of the U.S. federal courts if an action is brought to enforce responsibilities in relation to the environmental review process and that these responsibilities have been satisfied. HUD’s approval of the certification satisfies its responsibilities under NEPA and related laws and authorities and allows GOSR to use CDBG-DR program funds. Objection to Release of Funds: HUD will accept objections to its release of funds and HCR’s certification for a period of fifteen days following the anticipated submission date or its actual receipt of the request (whichever is later). Potential objectors may contact HUD or HCR’s Certifying Officer to verify the actual last day of the objection period. The only permissible grounds for objections claiming a responsible entity’s non-compliance with 24 CFR Part 58 are: (a) Certification was not executed by HCR’s Certifying Officer; (b) the responsible entity has omitted a step or failed to make a decision or finding required by HUD regulations at 24 CFR Part 58; (c) the responsible entity has committed funds or incurred costs not authorized by 24 CFR Part 58 before release of funds and approval of environmental certification; or (d) another Federal agency acting pursuant to 40 CFR Part 1504 has submitted a written finding that the project is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of environmental quality. North Babylon High School is proud to announce that senior Jordan Fuentes has been

named a semifinalist in the CocaCola Scholars Program. This is an achievementb a s e d scholarship that is awarded to students in recognition of their capacity to lead and serve in their schools and communities. Fuentes, who was accepted to attend Cornell University next fall, was one of 1,896

students across the nation that were selected as a semifinalist out of more than 95,000 applicants. He will be competing for 150 college scholarships valued at $20,000. Fuentes said the next step of the scholarship process includes submitting essays and responses that discuss his volunteer work, academics and school activities. For Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York, his mom’s famous “Heart Attack” Noodles are connected to his fondest memories of growing up in Levittown. As he tells it, this fun dish was a staple at just about every special occassion. “My mom made this dish for my family for as long as I can remember. She would prepare it for our neighborhood block parties, for Christenings, and on Christmas. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently commended seven local Girl Scouts from North Babylon and West Babylon for their work in the community that earned them Silver Awards, the highest award available to Girl Scout Cadettes. In a ceremony held at Robert Moses Middle School in North Babylon on November 5th, Legislator Donnelly presented County Proclamations to the following girls for their projects: Ashley Beck and Briana MARCH FOR HUMAN RIGHTS - Fifth-grade students at Parliament Place Elementary School relayed a message on human rights during their Silent March. Nevers, who hosted sewing classes, collected fabric donations and created pillowcases for a children’s charity; Daniela Schierle and Emma Vieta, who collected portable DVD players and other electronic and print books for the children’s ward at Good Samaritan Hospital; Mackenzie and Peyton Losardo, who beautified Phelps Park by painting large trash cans; and Stephanie Velez, who organized and collected a large amount of school supplies for children in need.

In order to qualify for the Silver Award, Girl Scouts must perform at least 50 hours of service and complete a full report on their self-developed project. “These dedicated young women have selflessly contributed their time and skills to assist others and our community and, in doing so, have already proven themselves to be leaders,” said Legislator Donnelly. “We are all proud of their accomplishments and appreciative of their contributions.”
