View the night sky from the top of the lighthouse. Bring a flashlight for your walk back to the parking field. The fee is $15 for FILPS members; $20 for non-members. Reservations are required. Sunset: 4:58 p.m. *** Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, February 13th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of the present day Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s

Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. The fee is $15 for FILPS members; $20 for nonmembers. Reservations are required. Limit 12 people. *** Lighthouses Are for Lovers Saturday, February 13th, from 4 to 6 p.m. Enjoy the sunset with your “someone special.” Climb the Tower and enjoy light refreshments served at sunset on the terrace. A free flower and chocolates will be given out to couples with reservations. The fee is $50 per couple. Reservations required. *** Celebrate Presidents Week Monday through Friday, February 15th through 19th There will be reduced tower tour fees for

The Huntington Opportunity Resource Center will offer some new programs as 2016 begins, helping to provide training in the hospitality industry to disadvantaged and displaced workers and offering a site where the aged, blind and disabled can sign up for public insurance/assistance programs. The employment training is being offered as a result of two state grants, each for $50,000, the Town obtained through St. Joseph’s College, which has partnered with the Opportunity Resource Center on a number of programs and which will conduct the training in conjunction with Suffolk County Community College. The first grant provides $50,000 in Workforce Investment Act funds for occupational skills training of dislocated workers to prepare them for full-time jobs (35 hours or more per week) needed

Life As We Know It By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “See the glass half full, and find the good in everyone…” So wrote one of my former teachers in the pages of my high school yearbook, a sentiment that seems to resonate more with each passing year. Too often do we become consumed by the monotony of our daily routines, allowing the negativity which surrounds us to engulf what always begins as the best of intentions. With this New Year, I hope to maintain a certain degree of optimism in the face of what can only be classified as Life. As Frank Sinatra sang, “You’re ridin’ high in April, shot down in May; but I know I’m gonna change that tune when I’m back on top, back on top in June…” And so it

goes, month-to-month, dayto-day, even hour-to-hour. You just simply don’t know what may be in store over the horizon, an uncertainty which inspires both excitement and apprehension, depending upon your makeup. The only constant is the need to adapt with the rolling tide, rather than allowing it to sweep us away. We may not be able to control what obstacles come our way; but we can surely dictate how we react to them. So, as we begin 2016, let us dispense with whatever shallow resolutions we have most likely already broken, in favor of something far more meaningful – a new way of thinking, of being, of living. Let us find that good in everyone and see the bright side of the cloudiest of days. Call it misplaced idealism

if you will; but to me, it is perhaps the greatest sense of realism there is. Learning to deal with life in all its glory and chaos is as real as it gets. To all my readers, I thank you for yet another year of support, of sweet sentiments and gentle critiques. 2015 was a year of milestones: my 10th year working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, my 500th In Step column and the expansion of our blossoming sister publication, Seasons™ Magazine. It was also, let us not fail to mention, the debut of Buddy the Betta and his occasional In Swim features. {Buddy sends his regards as well, and thanks his supporters for their constant fan letters and accolades.} Here’s to another year of making memories… and, most importantly, of making the best of things.

provides another $50,000 in Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funds to train dislocated workers in special populations (for example, exoffenders, limited English proficiency, individuals with disabilities, recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and veterans) who require classroombased occupational skills training in order to be qualified to be hired for full time employment in the region. “These grants enable the Opportunity Resource Center to provide additional services to Town residents and become an even more valuable resource for all those who can benefit from the center’s programs,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone. “We value the partnership with St. Joseph’s College and thank them for their active role in helping to obtain this grant.” “We are always looking

for new ways to broaden the way the Opportunity Resource Center addresses the need for services that will help residents improve their lives, whether by linking them to assistance programs or by preparing them for jobs that are in demand,” Councilwoman Tracey Edwards said. “These training programs have the potential to be lifechanging, and the Town is pleased to be able to serve our residents this way.” In addition to basic courses preparing people for entry into the workforce, including basic workforce skills, the training programs will offer two specialized sequences in the hospitality industry and in welding and soldering. The Opportunity Resource Center will also be a location for the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council’s Consumer Assistance for the Aged, Blind and Disabled Program. That program, which is overseen by the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, provides in-person enrollment assistance for programs and services. The target groups are people who

fall into one of three categories: certified blind, certified disabled or 65 years of age or older. Additionally, Medicare recipients looking for supplemental Medicaid insurance, as well as people looking for Medicare savings programs to help with Medicare expenses can apply for those programs with help from the enrollers. The enrollers will be at the Opportunity Resource Center one day a month: January 14th, February 11th, March 10th, April 14th, May 12th, June 9th, July 14th, August 10th, September 8th, October 13th, November 10th and December 8th. LIGHTHOUSE MISSION - On December 22nd, Supervisor Ed Romaine celebrated the holidays with Reverend Jim Ryan at the Lighthouse Mission’s annual toy drive. The event was held at the Kreamer Street Elementary School in Bellport. Lighthouse Mission is a faith-based, non-denominational organization that provides food for more than 156,000 people in need on Long Island each year. In addition, Lighthouse Mission provides hope, encouragement and vital information to help people overcome poverty and live productive, purpose-filled lives.

Veteran Pins Awarded Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern participated in a special ceremony to award Veterans Pins to First Responders who have also served our great nation in the military. Special pins were created as part of a program to recognize those who serve our community both locally, as firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians and in the armed forces. Legislator Stern awarded pins to Christopher Schiavo of the Deer Park Fire Department (DPFD) and to Second Assistant Chief Alan Berkowitz of the

Dix Hills Fire Department (DHFD). Christopher Schiavo is a 26 year member of the DPFD, served as Chief from 2000-2008 and currently serves as a Fire Commissioner. A Lieutenant Colonel in his 31st year of service in the United States Air Force, he serves as Liaison Director for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He is a pilot in the Aviation Unit of the Suffolk County Police Department, is president of the Suffolk Police Veterans Association and is a member of the Sons of Italy and the

Knights of Columbus. Alan Berkowitz is an Advanced EMT-CC and serves as Second Assistant Chief of the DHFD, where he has been a member for 15 years. He was deployed at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks on our nation on September 11th, 2001 and was awarded Town Chief of the Year in 2014. He is a Major in the Air Force Reserves Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corp. He led a unit that aided in the prosecution of Iraqi terrorists and currently serves as an Administrative Law Judge.

Delivering Cheer Staff from Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) Melville corporate offices volunteered their time and enthusiasm to bring Christmas cheer to hundreds of Long Island families. Collaborating with the Gerald Ryan Outreach Center at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Wyandanch, the CHS employees worked tirelessly, collecting new toys and monetary contributions to purchase

items for local children whose families were identified as being in need through the parish program. They distributed these gifts, along with stocking stuffers, Christmas decorations, turkeys and hams. This eighth consecutive toy drive was a huge success, surpassing the impact of last year’s toy collection. With CHS’s Information Technology Field Services Department spearheading the effort,

system staff members from various departments worked together to collect newly purchased merchandise and donate more than $2,000 for additional purchases. Many gave of their time to sort and deliver these gifts. A total of more than 1,300 children received toys in this partnership with community members and the Wyandanch church.
