Throughout history, the Long Island Pine Barrens has meant different thing to different cultures and segments of the community. To Native Americans, the Pine Barrens was an ecosystem rich in resources, to be used in meeting daily living needs. European settlers used these resources too, although often in a manner that had destructive impacts. “The purpose of this exhibition is to provide an interpretation of the relationship between various human cultures and the resources and landscapes that collectively comprise the Long Island Pine Barrens,” said Suffolk County Historian Peter Fox Cohalan. The exhibit runs through June 2013.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone marked the forty third anniversary of Earth Day today, unveiling an exhibit honoring one of Suffolk County’s most environmentally sensitive and significant areas, the Long Island Pine Barrens. The Suffolk County Historical Society has installed an exhibit, Barren and Waste Land: Long Islanders and the Pine Barrens in the lobby of the H. Lee Dennison county office building in Hauppauge. “Although first created in 1997, this exhibition remains relevant today to the environment and culture of our region,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “The Long Island Pine Barrens is a rich eco-system that Suffolk County is working hard to protect. This exhibit will help visitors to understand and appreciate the Pine Barren region more fully.” The exhibit focuses on one of the great natural resources of Long Island

The 62nd Annual Sammis Family House Tour, hosted by Family Service League (FSL), will be held on Wednesday, May 22nd, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This year’s Sammis Family House Tour features a wide array of well-appointed homes showcasing some of the North Shore’s finest architecture. The five tour homes are in the Huntington Bay, Lloyd Harbor, and Huntington vicinity. In its 62nd year, the Sammis Family House Tour has become a Long Island tradition. Hundreds of people are expected to take the opportunity to explore these fascinating homes, and at the same time support FSL’s efforts to restore hope and rebuild lives, one individual, one child and one family at a time. Early reservations are
recommended. Tickets are $55 in advance and $60 the day of the event. Lunch, complete with informal modeling and vendors, is being offered at Coindre Hall in Huntington for $30 (optional). I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions
among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction? The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the

I celebrated my 60th Birthday on Friday, April 26th. I walked into the office on that beautiful Friday morning to “60” decorations hanging over my desk, a “60” crown and a “60” necklace, balloons, various gifts, flowers, cards, plants, lottery scratch-offs, donuts and a beautiful birthday cake. The staff of this newspaper is like a “2nd family” to me and I am so very grateful to be an employee of this great paper, which by the way, will also be “60” years old this coming November. As I leave the Fabulous Fifties and enter the Sensational Sixties (another decade of life), I will always have a special memory of this wonderful day and hope to be employed here for many more days and years.

West Babylon Senior High School student Jordan Lynn Musante organized a fundraiser and has been raising money since Tuesday, April 16th at a table outside her school cafeteria for people adversely affected by the tragedy of the Boston Marathon bombings. Staffed solely by student volunteers, the collection raised over $350 by Friday, April 19th. The students made posters and distributed “Boston” ribbon pins to raise awareness of the fundraising effort. All money raised will be donated to The One Fund Boston (onefundboston. org). Volunteers are needed to assist Stony Brook University staff on May 4th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when 6,000 pinwheels will be installed in a field at South P Lot on the Stony Brook University Campus. The pinwheels represent the lives lost annually to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The pinwheels will serve as a powerful backdrop at Stony Brook University’s annual Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony, which will take place on May 11th, starting at 2 p.m. The annual Ride for Life, started in 1998 by Christopher Pendergast, a 20-year ALS patient, advocate, and founder of the Ride for Life Organization, raises awareness and funds for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. The 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients across Long Island begins May 6th and ends May 18th. A cornerstone of the Ride is the Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony at Stony Brook. The Ride also helps support Stony Brook Medicine’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Association certified center on Long Island. Area students, members of the community, and others interested in supporting the Ride for Life are welcome to help install the pinwheels. The idea of the pinwheels, conceived by Christopher Pendergast, is to remind everyone of the importance of research to seek better treatments for ALS and that a cure is “blowin’ in the wind.” For students seeking community service recognition that may be required from organizations or schools, a form is available to recognize their efforts. All volunteers are requested to bring a screwdriver if they have one. Refreshments are available to volunteers, including bagels during the morning hours and pizza and beverages for lunch. The academic advisor is Erin Casserly. “The Challenge” includes 192 high schools from the entire tri-state area — Long Island (with Nassau and Suffolk as two distinct regions), the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Connecticut. Long Island will be represented by 32 high schools from Nassau County and 32 high schools from Suffolk
County. A new matchup can been seen every Sunday through Friday at 6:30 p.m., on MSG Varsity, Cablevision’s Optimum Channel 14. Participating schools advance through a series of elimination rounds, with one school in each region being crowned regional champion and winning $2,500 for their school. The winning teams from each region go on to “The Challenge” Championship where they square off in a Tri-State Showdown. The school awarded the title of Tri-State Champion will receive $10,000 in prize money and each student participating in the final “Challenge” Championship game will receive $500. Following their English language arts unit on writing persuasive and informative letters, the first-graders in Karen Bender’s class at North Babylon’s Woods Road Elementary School wrote individual letters to President Barack Obama. In their letters, the students asked questions of President Obama, including queries about his favorite color, food, etc. To the surprise and elation of
the first-graders, the class received a response from the president, as well as a map of the White House and information on the life of Bo, the first dog. In his letter, President Obama thanked the students for their thoughts and told them that the success of our nation depends on them and their generation. “As you grow and learn, remember that our country is counting on you to be a dedicated and
hard-working student,” the president wrote in his letter. “I encourage you to set your sights high, aim for excellence in all that you do, and try each day to improve the lives of others in your community.” Later in the spring, the students will practice their letter writing when they draft letters to the famous fictional characters at Disney World.

They have a special relationship with the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition acting as their ‘little sisters’ lending a helping hand. The girls and their families show cooperation,

During the Spring Clean Up, Stanley Barany of Rock Solid, Inc. installed his unique inscribed rock as a tribute to all their hard work, and amazing results.
100th Birthday Celebration
Anthony Alduino, a resident at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Sayville, celebrated his 100th birthday on March 18th. Anthony was born in Oakfield, New York to parents Joseph and Mary Alduino and was the oldest of seven children. Anthony and his wife Thelma (Mona) moved to Babylon where they resided for
over 50 years. They were married over sixty years until Mona passed away in 2002. Anthony worked as a licensed barber and for the Brooklyn Navy Yard prior to his retirement. Anthony always believed in keeping active and was very involved in the Long Island Mummers and Long Island Banjo Society. Anthony has been a
resident at Good Samaritan Nursing Home since August 2012 where he enjoys watching sports and visits from his family and friends. A party was held at Good Samaritan Nursing Home with Anthony’s family, friends and staff to celebrate this special occasion.
