The Complaint Dept. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say the customer is always right, and yet… I recently had the pleasure of contacting the DMV regarding an error in the address printed on my registration. Silly me, I had sent the renewal in by snail mail rather than utilize their online services for this one thing, and then had proceeded to wait approximately three weeks for my new registration sticker to arrive. Relieved as I was to eventually receive it in time, something made me examine the information extra closely – and there it was, the typo. As per the instructions on the form, I immediately contacted my local DMV call center to report the mistake, figuring a new one would need to be issued. After waiting on hold for, oh,

about 20 minutes or so, I was finally transferred to a human – who promptly transferred me to yet another “department” (the complaint department?) for further assistance. More hold music. At least another 15 minutes spent waiting. And waiting... And then, finally, a voice came on the line. I explained the issue. Silence. “Hello?” I said, thinking perhaps the line had gone dead. “Yeah. So what’s the problem? You got it, didn’t you?” was the reply I was met with. “Um, yes, I received it, but the address is incorrect… and it says to contact you to correct it…?” I was beyond perplexed at having to explain any further at this point. “Yeah well, it’s correct on your license, and all they really pay attention to is your name and street number – the town doesn’t matter.” Okay then. “Ok,” I said, “Well then I guess

can you at least change it internally in your system, just so it’s correct for the future?” A giant sigh of exasperation came through the receiver. “Yeah. I guess so. You want the typo fixed?” (Wasn’t that what I just said?) “Um, yes, if it’s not too much trouble.” (Which, apparently, it was.) I then heard the pounding of fingers on the keyboard. I don’t think it would have been possible for this woman to make more noise typing three letters if she tried. “Is that all?” Oh yes, that was all. Why would I ever choose to prolong this conversation for even another second? Honestly, if the hold time wasn’t so extensive, I would have hung up and called back just to reach a different customer service rep. But, with my luck, this woman was probably the only one on duty that day.

BVAC photographers such as Edward Mooney, Edward Hansen, Marsha Huckeba, Tiquah Terrode, and Evan Reinheimer and James Cook have captured images from the island’s coastal shores to faraway countries. Beth Capodanno has utilized the art of printing to capture the imprint of local fish. Ned Butterfield, Kathy Cunningham, Mary Anna Euring,O.P, Edward Lee, Laurie Schlageter and John Mittendorf visualize the world though the paints and inks. Tom Stock has repurposed material to create collages from mundane objects while Rosemary Romeo has made jewelry out of beach glass. Alison Buser and Kaara Henrique will display their artwork though the funding from the Babylon Village Arts Council Art Partnership program. This event is free and open to the public. The rain date is May 19th, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. It is partially funded though a grant from Suffolk County. Summer fun is almost here and so is the BVAC’s summer concert on July 13th at the Conklin House. This year, the grounds at the Conklin House will be filled with a myriad of art experiences. The Walk/Run For Friends of Karen at The Long Island Marathon, is an opportunity to help children diagnosed with cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses. The 5K Walk/Run on will be held on Saturday, May 4th, and the 10K, Half & Full Marathon will take place on Sunday, May 5th, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Friends of Karen provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with life threatening illnesses and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE Flowers add tremendously to the serenity and beauty of a funeral. But there is a point when “too much of a good thing” is not in the interest of all concerned. Now, I know that the florist dislike it when I write an article like this one, but remember I also recommend renting caskets to save money. There are alternatives to sending flowers. You can bring pictures of the deceased to share with the family. You can donate the money to a charity of your choice or a charity the family selects. You can send food to the home for the family between visiting hours or after the funeral. You can put money in an envelope and give it to the family and allow them to make the decision of what memorial they would like to see benefit from their loss. The question I am asked most often is “What happens to the flowers?” Well, some of the pieces are taken to the church (maximum of two pieces); some are taken to the cemetery. When possible some are given to nursing homes or other churches or charitable groups that may need flowers for the evening. The flowers that cannot be donated or given away are simply discarded. Remember, flowers do add to the beauty and serenity of the funeral but also remember there are other alternatives to sending flowers which I have mentioned above.

Babylon Athletes Honored Babylon Mayor Ralph Scordino and Suffolk County Legislator Wayne Horsley of the 14th Legislative District were among a handful of notable local officials on hand to recognize three of Babylon High School’s awardwinning athletic squads on April 10th in Babylon High School’s Rowe Hall auditorium. Among the honorees were the Babylon Panthers football team (Long Island champion, Rutgers Trophy winner), the Long Island champion Babylon Panthers girls varsity volleyball team and the Panthers boys basketball squad (Class B Long Island champion, Class B New York State finalist). The Panthers football team went undefeated, won the Long Island championship and earned the Rutgers Cup for being the most outstanding football team in Suffolk County. Babylon football was a scholar-athlete team with a cumulative GPA of 93.753.
