And beach entry fees may be waived after Labor Day. Families needn’t say goodbye to seaside adventures just because the calendar flips from August to September. There are plenty of warm days still in store. In fact, waiting until the crowds dissipate can make local beach towns and amenities more enjoyable. Camping out A movie under the stars followed by an evening of camping out in the backyard or a nearby campsite can be an ideal way to close out summer. Everyone can listen to those late-summer crickets singing their tunes while fireflies light up the sky. While sitting around a campfire or firepit, everyone can take turns sharing what they loved most about the summer and what they’re looking forward to doing in the weeks to come.
Fun Ways To Close Out Summer
A
fter a few months of fun in the sun, it can be difficult to admit that summer will soon be over. Lazy, hazy days likely filled the calendar, with time spent poolside or at a beach. Just because summer is winding down doesn’t mean that all the relaxing fun must cease. Families can extend the fun a little longer with these ideas that can help everyone ride the last of the summertime wave. The fair is in town The end of summer tends to be fair season. Fairs and carnivals offer an assortment of entertainment all under one roof (or tent). Fairs have rides, carnival games, livestock shows and contests, food on a stick, and musical performances. They can be ideal ways for families to find something fun everyone can enjoy.
Summer may be singing a swan song, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had in the waning weeks of this popular and fun season.
Late-season vacation When most families are gearing up to return to school and shopping for supplies and wardrobes, others may want to maximize the end of summer with a vacation. July tends to be a peak month for summer vacations. While August also is popular, prices and crowds tend to drop by late August, meaning families may be able to score good deals the longer they wait. Add Some Sweetness To Your Morning Waffles
Coconut Flour Waffles And Coconut Milk With Blueberrie s
Makes 4 servings
B
reakfast has long been touted as the most important meal of the day. While that may or may not be true, a hearty breakfast is certainly something to enjoy. Weekday mornings might be a bit too busy to enjoy something more complex than a bowl of cereal, but come the weekend, a homemade and hearty breakfast can make for a great start to a Saturday or Sunday morning. When such an opportunity presents itself, a little something sweet, like this recipe for “Coconut Flour Waffles and Coconut Milk With Blueberries” from Lines+Angles, can make for a great departure from standard weekday breakfasts.
For the waffles: 4 large eggs 1 tablespoon maple syrup or coconu t sugar 1 pinch salt 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
1⁄2 cup coconut milk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1⁄2 cup coconut flour
1⁄4 teaspoon baking powder
1⁄4 cup fresh blueberries, lightly crus hed Cooking spray To serve: 1⁄4 cup fresh blueberries
DIRECTIONS: 1. For the waffles: Preheat a waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. 2. Combine the eggs, sweetener, salt, coconut oil, coconut milk, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl, whisking until thoroughly combined. 3. Add the coconut flour, baking powder, and crushed blueberries, beating well until no longer lumpy. Let stand for 10 minutes. 4. Spray waffle iron with cooking spray. Ladle batter into the iron and close. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden and crisp. 5. Remove from the iron and keep warm to one side, covered loosely with aluminum foil. Cook remaining waffles in the same fashion. 6. To serve: Stack waffles on plates and top with blueberries. Tip: For a lower carb count, replace the blueberries with blackberries or raspberries. www.longislandmediagroup.com

Helpful Back-To-School Tips For Students And Parents
A
fter a summer of relaxation, the start of a new school year generates mixed emotions among students. Many children look forward to being back on campus with their friends but may not revel in the idea of waking up early or doing homework each night. While summer break is a much needed-respite from the rigors of school, it doesn’t mean school should be forgotten entirely. In fact, doing some preparatory steps before a new school year begins can make the year go much more smoothly. Here’s how students and parents can direct their focus during the final countdown.

Keep reading According to Scholastic, summer slide is a concept that was first acknowledged by researchers in 1996. Many comprehensive studies have come out since then and indicated that kids lose significant knowledge in reading and math over summer break, which can have a cumulative effect and lead to skill loss each year. Some research says up to 20 percent of school year gains in reading and 27 percent in math are lost during summer break. Children should be encouraged to read as much as possible during summer break, particularly since many schools require summer reading and subsequent
essays or book reports upon returning to the classroom. Let kids read what they want, whether it’s comics, magazines, the newspaper, or even books they’ve read before.
Start enforcing bedtimes School-aged children (six to 13 years) need nine to 12 hours of sleep every night, according to KidsHealth. org. During the summer, late nights can easily be rectified by sleeping in the next day. But when school resumes, the alarm clock will be ringing earlier than expected. Parents can gradually implement earlier bedtimes as summer winds down so that kids are getting the rest they will need.

Every Journey Begins With A Single Step
E
Now, as life begins to slow down in the best possible way, it feels like the perfect time to begin writing again.
That's why I've called this column Kerry's Compass.
If you know me, you probably know there's no better place to start than
By Kerry Mastrobuoni very Journey begins with a single step, but it isn't always the destination that shapes us, It's the direction we choose each day.
A Compass doesn't tell us how fast to travel or what challenges lie ahead, It simply points us toward true north. It's been many years since I last put my thoughts on paper. Somewhere between marriage, raising children, work, friendships, family gatherings and keeping up with the beautiful chaos of everyday life, writing quietly found its place on the back burner. Not forgotten, just patiently waiting.
So welcome to Kerry's Compass.
The End - Montauk. There’s a certain magic that begins the moment you cross into town. The air feels different. It’s as if the Atlantic has a way of reminding you to breathe a little deeper. Montauk has changed over the years. It’s no secret that influencers, luxury hotels, and social media have transformed this once-quiet fishing village into one of the East Coast’s trendiest
destinations. Prices have climbed right alongside its popularity, and yes, a weekend in peak summer can leave your wallet noticeably lighter. But here’s the secret seasoned Montauk lovers already know: you can still experience its charm without spending a fortune. Visit midweek, come after Labor Day when the crowds thin, or sneak away during the shoulder season. The beaches are just as breathtaking, the sunsets just as spectacular, and you'll often discover the Montauk that locals have loved for generations. Some of my favorite memories have been made over long dinners at Duryea’s, where the waterfront views somehow make time stand still. Cocktails at The Crow’s Nest have become a tradition, with its effortless coastal charm and twinkling lights that make every evening feel like summer should never end. And then there’s The Montauket, perched high above the water, where locals and visitors gather together to watch one of the most spectacular sunsets on Long Island. It truly never gets old. Beyond the well-known favorites lies the history that gives Montauk its soul. The iconic Montauk Point Lighthouse that has stood watch since 1796, guiding

ships through changing tides for generations. Wander the quiet trails of Camp Hero, explore hidden beaches tucked away from the crowds, or simply take a scenic drive to discover the corners that don't always make it onto Instagram. Those are often the places that stay with you the longest. That’s what I hope Kerry’s Compass becomes—a place to share destinations worth exploring, hidden gems waiting to be discovered, and stories that remind us why we travel in the first place. Sometimes the greatest journeys aren’t measured in miles but in the memories they leave behind. And for me, this journey begins exactly where it should. At The End! I’d love to hear from you! Share your travel tips, ideas and inspiration at Kerryscompass@ longislandmediagroup. com. Until next time, always let your compass lead you somewhere worth remembering.

What Consumers Can Do To Support Local Farmers
A
strong agricultural sector is vital to a healthy economy. Turbulence has affected local and national economies in recent years, and the global economy has endured its own ups and downs during that span. Though there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to economic struggles, consumers can make a difference by supporting local agricultural producers. Job creation and economic output are two major reasons to support local farmers, and consumers can do that in various ways.
Read product labels to determine where foods are coming from. Non-seasonal foods are likely imported from far away, which has a detrimental impact on the environment and local economies. • Buy directly from local farms. Most consumers purchase their food from grocery stores near their homes, but it might be possible to purchase directly from local farmers. Farmers may utilize e-commerce tools to sell directly to residents and might even offer delivery services that are more convenient than driving to the nearest chain grocery store.
• Shop local. The shop-local movement can make a notable impact on local economies, and it affects more businesses than • Act as an advocate for brick-and-mortar stores local producers. rilling is a summertime tradition, but health-conscious grillmasters may want to marinate their meats before cooking them over an open flame. Heterocyclic Aromatic Amines (HAAs) are compounds that can form when meats are cooked over an open flame. HAAs are suspected carcinogens, but a study published in the Journal of Food Science found that, with a few exceptions, spicecontaining marinades inhibited the formation of heterocyclic amines, thus providing reduced exposure to some of the carcinogens formed during grilling.

Tips To Tend A Garden In Late Summer
A
s summer winds down, long stretches of sunlight are dwindling and cooler temperatures are on the horizon. Gardening enthusiasts may wonder how they can manage their backyard gardens as the peak growing season comes to a close. People may not be eager to do much in their gardens come August, particularly because the air may be hot and the dew point high. And spending the final days of summer at the beach or in the pool may take priority. However, late summer is a great time to focus on certain tasks. Deadheading Many plants look better with the wilted flowers removed. Furthermore, some plants, such as with lilies and roses, will benefit from having spent blooms removed so that no unnecessary energy is drawn away from the www.longislandmediagroup.com
roots or bulbs. Research your plants and learn which can benefit from some late-summer deadheading to keep them thriving. Weeding Weeds can become problematic if they’re allowed to grow unabated. Routinely go into the garden and cull the weeds. Keep an eye open for pests According to Garden Smart, caterpillars and beetles may be chewing on garden plants by late summer, and aphids still may be problematic. Handpick insects off of vegetables and ornamental flowers, or use safe sprays for treating these issues. Plant cool weather vegetables Many plants will grow well when planted in late summer, according to Homesteading Family. Some such plants include turnips, beets, carrots, kale, chard, mustard greens,
and peas. You can begin turning your summer garden, or a portion of it, into a fall and winter garden. Consider succession planting Growing vegetables like beans or peas may be more successful if you try succession planting. This involves sowing new seeds every seven to 10 days to extend the harvest. Harvesting what’s ready Pick vegetables that are ready to eat, and remove any plants that have reached the end of their growing cycle. Convert planter boxes and containers This is a good time to start changing over summer annuals in containers and planter boxes to those that do well in fall, such as mums, asters, pansies, and goldenrod. There’s plenty of work to be done in the garden come the end of summer.

Gardening and strong mental health seemingly go hand in hand. A study published in the journal Clinical Medicine found that exposure to plants and green spaces— particularly through gardening—is beneficial to both physical and mental health. Penn State Extension says working with soil and plants can help relax the mind and have a grounding effect, reducing stress, anxiety and even built-up anger. Gardening also helps people stay connected to the present moment rather than becoming caught up in their thoughts. Like nearly all forms of exercise, gardening can boost mood and lower stress and anxiety levels. In addition, establishing routines, such as spending part of each day weeding or tending to plants, creates a soothing rhythm that can help ease stress.
