Presiding Officer McCaffrey Recognizes Denise DeFazio As Healthcare Hero!

Suffolk County Legislature recognized inspiring contributions to the healthcare of our County from a diverse and inspiring range of “Healthcare Heroes” with special presentations on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey was proud to name Denise DeFazio as the 2025 Healthcare Hero Honoree for the 14th Legislative District during the Suffolk County Legislature’s General Meeting on June 3, 2025. Denise, a Licensed Massage Therapist of 22 years with a specialty in women living with and surviving breast cancer, was honored alongside 18 other “Healthcare Heroes” from across Suffolk County chosen by the legislators of their respective districts. Denise’s private practice in Babylon is only the most recent chapter of a decades-long, multifaceted campaign to support the members of her community in their ongoing efforts against cancer.

“It was impossible not to be impressed by the true dedication and commitment of Suffolk’s ‘Healthcare Heroes,” said Presiding Officer McCaffrey. In addition to her private practice of

several years, Denise has 10 years’ experience as a hospital nurse, teacher, and as a member of the Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, and has been providing medical massages for outpatients, employees, and community members at Stony Brook-Southampton Hospital ED and Phyllis Davies Wellness Institute for the past 13 years. “With a background in Nursing and Education, Medical Massage is a good fit for Denise,” said McCaffrey, “Massage Therapy is a profession which benefits people in a holistic manner, regarding them as an individual, family member and community member.”

Denise extends this holistic approach beyond her practice, contributing to the well-being of her community within her personal life as well as in her career. “Denise is very honored to be part of the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, which meets women where they are in their health journey and treats them as a whole person. She began her non-profit in order to reach people with cancer who might not otherwise be able to afford the handson treatment that they

need for their lymphedema and other medical issues.”

When Denise is out of the office, she can be found enjoying her passion for swimming. A caretaker to her father when he chose to pass away at home, Denise’s two hospice care-fundraising Cross Bay Swims united her advocacy for at-home endof-life care with her daily commitment to centering healthcare in her public and private lives.

“Denise’s mother always said that helping others is the best thing we can do, and Denise tries to live up to those words every day. She is grateful that she has been able to make a difference in the quality of lives of many people, who have, in turn, enriched her own life immensely,” Presiding Officer McCaffrey said in closing.

The Suffolk County Legislature’s Presiding Officer, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey represents Suffolk County’s 14th Legislative District, which encompasses the Villages of Lindenhurst and Babylon, the hamlets of West Babylon and North Lindenhurst, portions of Copiague, North Babylon, and Babylon’s barrier beach communities.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Liquid Iron

Though few people consider the end of summer a cause for celebration, the weather outside need not preclude men and women from enjoying a cool and refreshing beverage. Those who simply can’t say “so long” to summer may want to find a nearby patio, pull up a chair and pour themselves a glass of “Liquid Iron” courtesy of Brian Preston-Campbell’s “Cool Waters” (Harvard Common Press). Not only is the following drink refreshing and cool for those waning hot days before summer officially goes away, but it’s also a great source of iron and calcium.

Makes 6 servings

2 stalks red Swiss chard, chopped

1⁄4 cup chopped spinach leaves

1⁄4 cup chopped purple kale

1 teaspoons loose green tea leaves

6 cups still water

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place the chard, spinach, kale, and tea leaves in a blender with 1 cup of the water. Purée until fairly smooth, about 1 minute.

2. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher, using a ladle or rubber spatula to extract as much juice as possible. Add the remaining water, stir gently, and serve. STAY COOL AS SUMMER

Town of Babylon Recognizes 8-Year-Old Zamari Harrell

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor and Councilman Tony Martinez, Assemblyman Khaleel M. O’Pharrow, and Councilman Terence McSweeney proudly recognized 8-year-old Zamari Harrell for his outstanding contributions to the community through

Did You Know?

Scores of people insist that exercising with a partner is a great way to remain committed to a fitness regimen, and now research is beginning to support that assertion. A 2023 study from researchers in Japan published in the Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics found that exercising both alone and with a partner two or more times a week helped to lower risk of cognitive impairment, but the risk was decreased by a more significant margin among those who exercised with others.

Presiding Officer Mccaffrey Recognizes Christine Glynn In Celebration Of Women Veterans!

Women Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces from across Suffolk County were recently honored for their service and sacrifice in helping to protect our freedom and liberty.

With these presentations, each of the 18 members of the Suffolk County Legislature helped mark Women Veterans Recognition Day by introducing a deserving women veteran from their district at Tuesday’s General Meeting of the Legislature. Women Veterans Recognition Day, celebrated annually on June 12th, marks the 1948 signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women the right to permanently serve in the regular armed forces.

“It is a special privilege to honor Suffolk’s women veterans each year. Beyond the uniform, their service continues in our communities. And throughout America’s history, women have served in wars and conflicts from the Revolutionary War on,” said Presiding Officer Kevin J. McCaffrey. “Today, women serve in all military specialties, including logistics, munitions, intelligence, and even combat. Their contributions are vital to what many consider the strongest, most professional, educated, and agile military our nation has known. Despite their longstanding service, many women veterans struggle to be recognized, respected and valued as veterans in civilian life. After all they have done and continue to do, women veterans certainly deserve our support and respect.”

“From my district, I am pleased to be able to honor Christine Glynn, who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1988, and during her

26-year service career served as a presidential security guard, military police person, administrative chief, and personnel officer, retiring as a Warrant Officer 4,” said McCaffrey. “She’s currently the senior marine instructor for the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps at Lindenhurst High School, helping to influence today’s youth and mold them into tomorrow’s leaders through thousands of hours of community service and volunteerism. She has also served as chairperson of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Women Veteran’s Advisory

Board, as a member of the Suffolk County Task Force to assist retired veterans, the Northwell Health Women Veterans Health Initiative Board, and the National Women Marines Association.”

Christine proudly maintains a bachelor’s degree in Small Business and Entrepreneurship and a master’s degree in work and labor policy with a dual certification in Veteran Services; but she says her most successful accomplishments are her two children; Kyle and Morgan. And with her first two grandchildren on the way, life is only getting better!
