Woman Veterans Appreciation Day was established by Resolution No. 94-2020 to honor the achievements and sacrifices of the brave women who have served in our Armed Forces. Each Suffolk County Legislator selects one Woman Veteran from their district to be recognized as part of the observance.

Legislator Donnelly Honors Wynette Bates Of Deer Park As His 2026 Woman Veteran Of Distinction
Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently honored United States Army Veteran Wynette Bates of Deer Park as his 2026 Suffolk County Woman Veteran of Distinction.
Legislator Donnelly read her name and shared highlights of her military service and community involvement during the Legislature’s General Meeting on Tuesday, June 23 in Hauppauge, where he also presented her with an official County Proclamation.
Ms. Bates enlisted in the United States Army in July 1979 and, upon completing basic training, was awarded the Military Occupational Specialty of Petroleum Supply Specialist. In that role, she was responsible for ensuring military vehicles and aircraft received the fuel necessary to support safe and effective operations. Although her military service was cut short by a medical hardship, she remained dedicated to her fellow veterans and has spent years supporting those who served alongside her.

Today, Ms. Bates is actively involved with the Northport VA Medical Center, where she participates in women veterans’ groups and volunteers in the indigent clothing room, helping veterans transitioning from treatment programs obtain clothing and basic household necessities. She is also an active member of MWSOA, Inc., which advocates on behalf of women veterans. In Deer Park, she organizes and hosts weekly bingo gatherings for seniors and fellow residents in her community, continuing her lifelong commitment to helping others and building connections.
