Family, friends, elected officials, and members of the local surfing community gathered to celebrate the dedication of Charlie Bunger Sr. Way, extending from Deer Park Avenue to Totten Place, honoring a man whose passion for surfing helped shape both an industry and generations of Long Islanders.
Long before serving on the Babylon Town Board, Councilman Terence McSweeney was one of countless customers who grew up visiting Bunger Surf Shop.
“Before I was a Councilman, I was a customer,” McSweeney said. “Bunger Clothing has always been a family favorite, and like so many others, we’ve made countless trips there over the years. It was an incredible honor to celebrate Charlie Bunger Sr. and recognize everything he and his family have meant to our community.”

began shaping surfboards in the basement of his home in 1961 at just 20 years old. What started as a small operation quickly evolved into one of the most respected names in surfing. From his first shop in Copiague to the iconic Bunger Surf Shop in Babylon Village, the Bunger family built not only a successful business but also an enduring legacy. Today, the shop proudly holds the distinction of being the oldest surf company store in North America to have never changed ownership or location.
Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said Charlie Bunger’s story is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that has long defined the Town of Babylon.
“Charlie Bunger turned a passion into an institution that has become part of Babylon’s identity,” Schaffer said. “For more than six decades, the Bunger family has inspired generations of surfers, supported our local economy, and remained deeply committed to our community. This street dedication ensures Charlie’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”
The street dedication was made possible through legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Michael Durso and Senator Alexis Weik.
“Charlie Bunger’s legacy extends far beyond surfing,” Durso said. “He represents the very best of Long Island—a hardworking
entrepreneur, a community leader, and a family man whose business has become a landmark. It was my privilege to help sponsor this legislation so that his remarkable contributions will be recognized for generations to come.”
Senator Monica Martinez also joined local officials, community members, and the Bunger family in
celebrating the occasion. The Town of Babylon congratulates the entire Bunger family on this welldeserved recognition and thanks them for more than six decades of dedication to the community. Their story serves as a lasting reminder that, with hard work, passion, and family, a dream can grow into a legacy that stands the test of time.
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that several Long Island State Parks will remain open during the nighttime hours for viewing of the Perseids Meteor Shower on Wednesday, August 12 through predawn hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026 . There will be no charge and the normal
star gazing permit will not be required. You must remain near your vehicle. We suggest that you dress appropriately, bring bug spray, and a chair that reclines. Binoculars are not necessary. Look towards the northeast and enjoy the celestial show.

The Town of Babylon proudly congratulates Lorenzo Napolitano of Boy Scout Troop 399 on earning the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in Scouting, in recognition of his outstanding leadership, dedication to service, and commitment to his community.
For his Eagle Scout service project, Lorenzo designed and constructed a food donation drop box for the North Babylon
Food Pantry at St. Paul’s Reformed Church. The weather-protected structure provides residents with a secure place to leave food donations outside of the pantry’s operating hours, ensuring donations remain safe from the elements until volunteers are able to bring them inside.
Lorenzo selected the project as a way to give back to St. Paul’s Reformed Church, where Troop 399 has held meetings for
many years. His thoughtful project will help strengthen the food pantry’s mission of serving families in need throughout the community.
“Earning the rank of Eagle Scout represents years of hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to serving others,” said Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “Lorenzo’s project addresses a real
need in our community while demonstrating the leadership and compassion that define an Eagle Scout. We are incredibly proud of his accomplishment and grateful for the lasting impact he has made on behalf of local families.”
Councilman Terence McSweeney also praised Lorenzo’s achievement and the spirit of volunteerism it represents.
“As someone who has spent a lifetime in public service, I have always admired the values Scouting instills in our young people,” said Councilman Terence McSweeney. “Lorenzo saw a need, developed a solution, and created something that will benefit our community for years to come. His project reflects the very best of what it means to be an Eagle Scout—leadership, selflessness, and service to others. Congratulations
to Lorenzo, his family, and everyone at Troop 399 on this tremendous achievement.”
The Town of Babylon congratulates Lorenzo Napolitano on becoming Troop 399’s 84th Eagle Scout and thanks him for his dedication to making the community a better place. His Eagle Scout project will continue to support the North Babylon Food Pantry and the many families who rely on its services for years to come.
The Babylon Union Free School District Board of Education held its reorganization meeting on July 13. During the meeting, new and returning trustees were sworn in, and the Board selected its president and vice president for the 2026–2027 school year. Returning trustees Robert Verdi and Catherine Weiland were sworn in, along with new Trustee Marissa Sciremammano. The Board also voted to elect Donna Noesi as president and David Sonkin as vice president. Ex Officio Board Member Abigail Love was welcomed to the Board as well.
“This is an exciting time for our district, and I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the Babylon School Board for the 2026-2027 school year,” President Noesi said. “My focus remains on continuing this Board’s mission of ensuring that Babylon’s students receive a topquality education in a nurturing and safe environment. I look forward to a productive and positive year ahead.”
