Congratulations to the two winners of the 2026 Amityville Junior League Essay Contest, Jolieth Smith and Cate Tibbetts!
The two local high school students – now graduates –were honored by Village of Amityville Mayor Michael O’Neill and the Village Trustees at a Board meeting on July 13th. The winners were
selected for their essays that answered the questions: “Describe a community you belong to (cultural, academic, geographic, or interest-based). How has it shaped your identity and your sense of responsibility to others?”
First Place winner, Jolieth Smith is a graduate of Amityville Memorial High School and has been involved
in multiple activities and clubs, including Key Club and the National Honor Society. She has also achieved the academic recognition of high honor roll. Jolieth’s essay reflects on how she is shaped by her Caribbean-American cultural background and her growing passion for architecture and an appreciation for how it can
foster connections and wellbeing. Jolieth described how community, grounded in cultural traditions like mutual support, respect, and resilience, has deeply influenced her sense of responsibility toward others. Jolieth will attend Farmingdale State College in the Fall.
Second Place Winner Cate Tibbetts is a graduate of St.
John the Baptist Diocesan High School who attained Summa Cum Laude honors and is a member of multiple honor societies, including National Honor Society. Cate has been extensively involved in community service activities and was a student athlete, including varsity basketball and sailing. She has also acted as a mentor, ambassador and
student council member. Cate’s essay discusses how attending St. John’s shaped her through the values of service, responsibility, and faith. She recounted how a service trip to the Dominican Republic influenced her sense of empathy and sense of connection.
Cate will attend Providence College in the Fall.

NY Citizen Preparedness Program

With severe weather events becoming more frequent and more extreme, it is more important than ever to be prepared. The NY Citizen Preparedness Training Program teaches residents to have the tools and resources to prepare for any type of emergency, respond accordingly and recover as quickly as
possible. This training workshop will provide an introduction to responding to a man-made or natural disaster. Participants will be advised on how to properly prepare for any disaster, including developing a family emergency plan and stocking up on emergency supplies. Each family that attends will receive a preparedness kit. You must register for this program in advance by calling the Library or online at prepare.
