very Journey begins with a single step, but it isn’t always the destination that shapes us, It’s the direction we choose each day. That’s why I’ve called this column Kerry’s Compass. A Compass doesn’t tell us how fast to travel or what challenges lie ahead, It simply points us toward true north. It’s been many years since I last put my thoughts on paper. Somewhere between marriage, raising children, work, friendships, family gatherings and keeping up with the beautiful chaos of everyday life, writing quietly found its place on the back burner. Montauk has changed over the years. It’s no secret that influencers, luxury hotels, and social media have transformed this once-quiet fishing village into one of the East Coast’s trendiest destinations. Cocktails at The Crow’s Nest have become a tradition, with its effortless coastal charm and twinkling lights that make every evening feel like summer should never end. And then there’s The Montauket, perched high above the water, where locals and visitors gather together to watch one of the most spectacular sunsets on Long Island. It truly never gets old. Beyond the well-known favorites lies the history that gives Montauk its soul. The iconic Montauk Point Lighthouse that has stood watch since 1796, guiding ships through changing tides for generations. Wander the quiet trails of Camp Hero, explore hidden beaches tucked away from the crowds, or simply take a scenic drive to discover the corners that don’t always make it onto Instagram. Those are often the places that stay with you the longest. In its inaugural year, the Amityville PreK–5 Parent Teacher Association has earned the prestigious 2025–2027 National PTA School of Excellence designation for all three of the Amityville Union Free School District’s elementary schools: Northeast Elementary School, Northwest

Elementary School and Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School. “Earning the National PTA School of Excellence designation for all three of our elementary schools— Northeast, Northwest and Park Avenue—in our inaugural year is an incredible honor,” said Kayla Cooper, president

of the Amityville PreK–5 PTA. “Building a new PTA across three schools required families, volunteers, teachers, staff and administrators to come together with a shared vision and build something meaningful from the ground up.” Presented by National PTA, the School of

Excellence designation recognizes PTAs and schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to building meaningful family-school partnerships that support student success and well-being. The yearlong program encourages schools and PTAs to gather community feedback, develop datadriven action plans and strengthen family engagement to create lasting, positive outcomes for students. “This recognition is a testament to the power of partnership,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gina Talbert. “To earn the National PTA School of Excellence designation for all three of our elementary schools in the very first year of establishing the Amityville PreK–5 PTA is an extraordinary Members of the Amityville PreK–5 PTA marched alongside students, families and the accomplishment. It reflects Amityville 6–12 PTSA during the North Amityville Day Parade.

State Announces Grants For Vessel Wastewater Infrastructure To Stop Sewage Discharge Into Waterways ecosystems. “Boaters have an innate love for the water, and when proper discharge options are available, few would choose to spoil the very places where they recreate,” Martinez said. “Expanding investments in this program will make it easier for vessel operators to comply with the environmental safeguards that protect our water from harmful pollution. I thank Governor Hochul for her continued commitment to Long Island and our state’s waterways.” While most state coastal waters and connecting waterways are designated No Discharge Zones where vessel sewage disposal is illegal, compliance relies heavily on access to proper infrastructure. Small pump-out stations and mobile pump-out boats provide a convenient way

for vessel operators to properly dispose of onboard waste, reducing the physical barriers to compliance. Grants are now available

in amounts up to $80,000 for pump-out boats and $40,000 for stationary facilities and equipment upgrades. Funding also covers

ongoing facility operations, maintenance, and public education. Marina owners, municipalities, and eligible nonprofit organizations

can apply on a rolling basis through the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation efc.ny.gov/ clean-vessel

Long Island marinas and municipalities can receive up to $80,000 in funding for wastewater pump-out infrastructure through expanded grants available from New York’s Clean Vessel Assistance Program, state Sen. Monica R. Martinez and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced. The increased funding aims to improve water quality across Long Island and throughout the state by preventing untreated sewage from entering recreational waters. Improperly discharged wastewater from vessels adds nitrogen to local bays and harbors. When combined with runoff from outdated septic infrastructure, which is commonplace on Long Island, this excess nitrogen fuels harmful algal blooms and degrades coastal

Street Dedication Recognizes Charlie Bunger Sr.’s Lasting Legacy

Family, friends, elected officials, and members of the local surfing community gathered to celebrate the dedication of Charlie Bunger Sr. Way, honoring a man whose passion for surfing helped shape both an industry and generations of Long Islanders. Long before serving on the Babylon Town Board, Councilman Terence McSweeney was one of countless customers who grew up visiting Bunger Surf Shop. “Before I was a Councilman, I was a customer,” McSweeney said. “Bunger Clothing has always been a family favorite, and like so many others, we’ve made countless trips there over the years. It was an incredible honor to celebrate Charlie Bunger Sr. and recognize everything he and his family have meant to our community.” Charlie Bunger Sr. began shaping surfboards in the basement of his home in 1961 at just 20 years old. What started as a small operation

quickly evolved into one of the most respected names in surfing. From his first shop in Copiague to the iconic Bunger Surf Shop in Babylon Village, the Bunger family built not only a successful business but also an enduring legacy. Today, the shop proudly holds the distinction of being the oldest surf company store in North America to have never changed ownership or location. Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said Charlie Bunger’s story is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that has long defined the Town of Babylon. “Charlie Bunger turned a passion into an institution that has become part of Babylon’s identity,” Schaffer said. “For more than six decades, the Bunger family has inspired generations of surfers, supported our local economy, and remained deeply committed to our community. This street dedication ensures Charlie’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”

The street dedication was made possible through legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Michael Durso and Senator Alexis Weik. “Charlie Bunger’s legacy extends far beyond surfing,” Durso said. “He represents the very best of Long Island—a hardworking entrepreneur, a community leader, and a family man whose business has become a landmark. It was my privilege to help sponsor this legislation so that his remarkable contributions will be recognized for generations to come.” Senator Monica Martinez also joined local officials, community members, and the Bunger family in celebrating the occasion. The Town of Babylon congratulates the entire Bunger family on this welldeserved recognition and thanks them for more than six decades of dedication to the community. Their story serves as a lasting reminder that, with hard work, passion, and family, a dream can grow into a legacy that stands the test of time.
