Taking care of a vehicle involves more than just maintaining the equipment under the hood. Car washes keep a vehicle shiny and clean, which can help it look good while sitting in the driveway or cruising the highway. However, regular car washes are more than cosmetic.
• Protection from the sun: A car that is routinely and properly washed and waxed is less vulnerable to damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
• Extend the life of paint: Dirt and debris can build up on the paint surface and eventually lead to scratches and other damage. Bird droppings and sap can be corrosive. Washing will help remove grime and protect the paint in the process.
• Preserve the vehicle’s value: Drivers who plan to sell or trade in their vehicles in the future should realize that a wellmaintained car can bring in as much as 20 percent more for above-average condition, according to Kelley Blue Book. Maintaining a clean and shiny vehicle can protect its long-term value.
• Remove salt: Drivers who live near the ocean or in areas where roads are salted in the winter to melt snow may have cars with high salt corrosion rates. Unless it’s washed off frequently, salt can take its toll, leading to damage.
• Improve fuel efficiency: Drivers have felt pain in their wallets at the fuel pump in recent years. Dirty cars may be less aerodynamic and less fuel-efficient as a result. Keeping a car clean may improve its fuel efficiency.
• Maintain the interior: Car washes are not only about the exterior. Keeping a clean and tidy interior can help improve the air quality inside of the vehicle and prolong the life of upholstery, mats and interior components.

Abuzz every day for five weeks is Massapequa’s Teen Center, the middle schoolage piece of the district’s Summer Recreation Program. There are about 125 sixth, seventh and eighth graders at the Ames Campus on a typical day, along with college-age counselors and building directors.
Teen Center runs from July 1 to Aug. 1 and is open to students entering grades 6-8. The program is far less structured than the elementary camps and designed to promote increased independence as they reach middle school age. Participants
can choose their activities as there are rooms for arts and crafts, games and movies, as well as both gymnasiums and the outside fields for sports. Counselors are assigned to each location.
Campers also get to participate in special events and field trips. At
Ames, there was a Tropical Smoothie Day, a beach glass art session with DeeSigned by Me and the popular Camper Games, which included a dunk tank, snow cones, relay races and a tug-of-war. Field trips included bowling, the movies, Round 1 arcade and SkyZone.
Rising seventh grader
Mia Arnone attended the Teen Center for the second year and came for four of the five weeks.
“It’s fun,” she said. “You can be with your friends, and all of the directors and counselors are nice.”
Emma Bosman enjoys going on the field trips and
also likes the how the camp is structured so she and her friends can decide how their day is spent. Lucas Jardine said his favorite daily activities are playing basketball in the gym and cards in the game room.
“You can go to whichever room you want,” he said. “I like the choice.”

In July 2020, Bridget was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. While hospitalized on her 35th birthday in August 2021, she asked her loved ones to donate blood in her honor, instead of celebrating. She passed away just three months later, but her selfless final wish sparked a movement that continues to save lives.
“Bridget was an amazing young woman who lost her life to cancer far too soon,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Even at her most vulnerable, she made it her mission to inspire blood donations and help others.”
Bridget’s mother recalled her words: “All I want for my birthday is for everybody to give blood.”
Now in its fourth year, Bridget’s Birthday Blood Bank will once again be held in partnership with the New York Blood Center. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are
encouraged.
The blood drive will take place on Saturday, August 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Marjorie Post Park Community Center (Rooms A & B), 451 Unqua Road in Massapequa.
Schedule your donation at https://donate.nybc. org/donor/schedules/ drive_schedule/325620.
Let us know about your honors, awards, promotions and other announcements. They are always welcome. Photos can be emailed as well. Send them to editorial@ longislandmediagroup. com.

Fans of grilled food may insist grilling is an art form, and there are tricks of the trade that suggest producing delicious foods cooked over an open flame is more complicated than novices may think. Seasoning a grill is one such endeavor. Novices may not know what goes into seasoning a grill, but doing so can make it easier to remove cooked foods from grates that can become sticky as grills are used with greater frequency. Seasoning a grill involves oiling its cooking surfaces and
warming it. Some grill manufacturers even recommend seasoning brand new grills prior to using them. Various cooking oils can suffice when seasoning a grill, but the grilling experts at ThermoPro advise using an oil with a high smoking point. When applying oil to the grates, users can utilize a basting brush, rag or even a spray bottle. Once the oil has been applied, heat the grill, without any food on it, for roughly 30 minutes, or until the oil begins to smoke or burn.

What makes our hikes so healthy? In addition to the many physical and mental health benefits of hiking, our Healthy Hikes are held through the LIHC’s Walk with a Doc chapter. This means our hikes are led by a physician who will deliver health education about a different topic every month before joining walkers on the hike. Walk with a Doc is a national program that offers free physician-led walking events in communities
around the world, and we’re proud to bring these events to our Long Island neighbors. Get in some steps, talk with our docs along the way, and learn about the actions you can take now to live a healthier life for good.
For more information about Walk with a Doc, contact Brooke Oliveri, Manager of the Long Island Health Collaborative at boliveri@ nshc.org or call 631-9634167.
