Long Island Children’s Museum is giving young builders a place to dream big with the opening of Dig Zone, an interactive construction-themed exhibit where children can scoop, shovel, haul and explore through hands-on play. As the second new permanent exhibit to open at LICM this year, Dig Zone represents the Museum’s continued investment in creating fresh, engaging experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity and learning for Long Island families. Designed for children of all ages, Dig Zone transforms a simple pile of sand into an exciting construction site. Visitors can dig with real tools, load sand into construction vehicles, operate a hand-cranked conveyor belt, and work together to move materials across the job site. Every scoop and shovel introduces concepts like engineering, simple machines, cause and effect, collaboration and problem-solving through play. “Children naturally learn by doing,” said Ashley Niver, Director of Education at Long Island Children’s Museum. “Dig Zone gives families the freedom to experiment, build, collaborate and imagine together while developing important STEM and socialemotional skills in a joyful, hands-on environment.” Dig Zone joins Saltwater Stories: We Need the Sea & the Sea Needs Me, which opened in October of 2025, as one of the Museum’s newest permanent additions. Together, the exhibits reflect LICM’s commitment to continually evolving the Museum experience for returning visitors while remaining rooted in the power of play. For many Long Island families, LICM is more than a one-time destination—it’s a place children return to again and again as they grow. Captree State Park To Host Snapper & Crab Fishing Derby

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Long Island Region and Captree Bait and Tackle are pleased to announce that the annual Snapper and Crab Fishing Derby at Captree State Park will be held on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm each day. The Snapper & Crab Fishing Derby is held to encourage children to discover and enjoy fishing and crabbing. Children 16 years old and younger are welcome to participate. The tournament is free; however, the standard $8 vehicle use fee will be in effect. There are numerous fishing locations throughout Captree State Park. Participants are welcome to bring their own equipment or buy it at Captree Bait and Tackle. The shop will be open for sales from 6:30 am – 7:00 pm each day of the tournament. The last weigh in will take place at 1:00 pm, followed by an awards ceremony. Both the snappers and crabs will be weighed alive and live release is encouraged. Prizes will be awarded to the

first, second and third heaviest fish in each age category (7 years and younger; 8-12 years old and 13-16 years old) and to the top three heaviest crabs overall, both Saturday and Sunday. Winners must be present to receive their prize. Captree State Park is located on Ocean Parkway in Babylon. It can be reached by taking the Robert Moses Causeway south, or Ocean Parkway east. August Art Programs For Long Island Seniors The AFA Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center invites Long Island seniors to participate in free art programs at the Center (149 Schleigel Boulevard, Amityville) this August. Seniors can view the events schedule and register by visiting www.afalongisland. org or calling the Center at 631-223-4000. Art has many benefits. It can improve emotional well-being and cognitive health; reduce stress and anxiety; build self-esteem and confidence; and evoke positive memories. Participating in programs with others also stimulates social interaction and connection Programs offered during August include: Art Appreciation Using the Arts and Minds Approach – This program gives seniors, individuals living with dementia, and caregivers, a

place to enjoy and immerse themselves in art! Directed by a specially trained leader, the group gathers around to look at a selected work of art, contemplating and reflecting on how it inspires them. The educator leads the group in a conversation about the art, connecting everyone’s observations, ideas, and feelings. A handson artmaking activity where everyone explores materials and creative expression follows the discussion. Shoreline Expressions - Use your creativity and create a unique piece of art using treasures from the seashore. Beach glass, seashells and driftwood combine to create seaside images and frame the beauty of the season. Visual Poetry - Create poetry that combines words with images, colors, symbols, and typography to express ideas and emotions. Using cutout words and

descriptive phrases, you will craft a visual poem that adds meaning through both language and design. Open Art Studio - Explore painting, sculpture, collage, and more at your own pace. Allow your creativity to bloom with guidance and instruction from therapeutic specialists. Visual Poetry – Message in a Bottle – Create a visual poem using words, images, colors, and symbols. Choose from pre-printed text or write your own to create a meaningful keepsake while engaging creativity, memory, and attention. All programs are open to seniors of all skill levels. Delight Family And Friends With Homemade Sorbet Dessert and summer are a match made in heaven. Sweltering summer afternoons might not be comfortable, but any discomfort can be quickly washed away with a refreshing dessert, such as the following recipe for “Kiwi Fruit Sorbet” from Lou Seibert Pappas’ “Ice Creams & Sorbets” (Chronicle Books). Directions:

Kiwi Fruit Sorbet Makes about 1 quart 2 teaspoons grated lime or lemon zest 3⁄4 cup sugar, divided 3⁄4 cup water 2 p ounds kiwi fruit (about 8 kiwi frui t), peeled and quartered 6 t ablespoons freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice

In a small bowl, mash the 2 limes, quartered zest with 1 teaspoon of the sugar to release the oils. Combine the remaining sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Cook until the syrup is clear. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature. In a food processor or blender, purée the kiwi fruit with the juice, syrup and sugared zest. Transfer to a container, cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, about 3 hours. Freeze in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Or, to freeze without an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a 9-inch nonreactive square pan. Cover with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and freeze just until solid, 2 to 3 hours. Scrape out into an electric mixer or food processor and process briefly until light and fluffy. Serve at once or transfer to a container, cover, and freeze until firm, about 2 hours. At serving time, garnish with a lime wedge to squeeze over each serving.
