From his first shop in Copiague to the iconic Bunger Surf Shop in Babylon Village, the Bunger family built not only a successful business but also an enduring legacy. Today, the shop proudly holds the distinction of being the oldest surf company store in North America to have never changed ownership or location. Family, friends, elected officials, and members of the local surfing community gathered to celebrate the dedication of Charlie Bunger Sr. Way, extending from Deer Park Avenue to Totten Place, honoring a man whose passion for surfing helped shape both an industry and generations of Long Islanders. Long before serving on the Babylon Town Board, Councilman Terence McSweeney was one of countless customers who grew up visiting Bunger Surf Shop. “Before I was a Councilman, I was a customer,” McSweeney said. “Bunger Clothing has always been a family favorite, and like so many others, we’ve made countless trips there over the years. In her free time, Love enjoys reading, spending time at the beach, and being with friends. During the summer months, she works as a camp counselor, where she mentors and encourages younger children — a role that reflects her commitment to service and community. Love says she draws inspiration from a quote by Confucius: “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” The quote, she said, “Encourages me to view challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, and I hope to carry that mindset into my role on the Board of Education as I represent the voices of my fellow students.”

Representing the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians were President Lucinda Lauro Rooney, Treasurer Michelle Krafczek, Past Presidents Mary Louise Cairo and Piegi Fabian, and Past National LAOH President Margaret Hennessey, whose distinguished national leadership continues to be a source of pride for the Babylon organization. “It was an honor to represent the more than 750 members of St. Patrick’s Division 2 at our National Convention,” said Division President Chris Bradley. “The experience allowed us to share ideas with Hibernians from across the country while bringing back new inspiration to continue serving the Babylon

community through our faith, heritage, and charitable works.” Founded in 1946, St. Patrick’s Division 2 has proudly served the Babylon community continuously for nearly eight decades, making it one of the area’s longest-standing Irish-American fraternal organizations. This October, the Division will celebrate its 80th Anniversary, commemorating eight decades of preserving Irish heritage, promoting the Catholic faith, supporting charitable causes, and strengthening the Babylon community through volunteerism and civic engagement. Today, St. Patrick’s Division 2 remains one of the largest and most active AOH and LAOH organizations in New York State, with more than 750 members dedicated to the Order’s enduring motto of Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity.

Ciara Weisbecker, a rising junior at Babylon Junior-Senior High School, has earned the prestigious Gold Award from Girl Scouts of Suffolk County for her community service project, “Connection Through Communication.” An active member of both her community and Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, Ciara developed the project to help ensure that students of all communication abilities can better express their wants and needs. She collaborated with Babylon School District Director of Student Services Mrs. Hagemeyer, along with Babylon SEPTA leaders Mrs. Good and Mrs. Sawzyn, to create resources that support inclusive communication throughout the district. As part of her Gold Award project, Ciara created more than 200

communication lanyards for teachers and staff at Babylon Elementary School and Babylon Memorial Grade School. Each lanyard contains picture icons that can be used to help students who communicate differently express themselves more effectively. In addition, Ciara provided every school in the Babylon School District with a “Calming Cart” stocked with sensory toys, fidget items, weighted toys, coloring materials, sensory binders, and other age-appropriate resources. The carts are designed to provide students with readily accessible tools that promote self-regulation, communication, and emotional well-being. Ciara’s dedication to leadership and service extends beyond her Gold Award project. She was named Girl Scout of

the Month in November 2025, won the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Light Show contest in December 2025, serves as a member of the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Media Girls and Advisory Board, and was selected as a delegate to represent Girl Scouts of Suffolk County at this year’s National Girl Scout Convention. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting and recognizes girls who identify a community need, develop a sustainable solution, and demonstrate exceptional leadership through projects that create lasting change. Ciara’s “Connection Through Communication” project will continue to benefit Babylon students for years to come by fostering greater inclusion and accessibility throughout the school district.

Weekday mornings might be a bit too busy to enjoy something more complex than a bowl of cereal, but come the weekend, a homemade and hearty breakfast can make for a great start to a Saturday or Sunday morning. When such an opportunity presents itself, a little something sweet, like this recipe for “Coconut Flour Waffles and Coconut Milk With Blueberries” from Lines+Angles, can make for a great departure from standard weekday breakfasts.

DIRECTIONS: 1. For the waffles: Preheat a waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. 2. Combine the eggs, sweetener, salt, coconut oil, coconut milk, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl, whisking until thoroughly combined. 3. Add the coconut flour, baking powder, and crushed blueberries, beating well until no longer lumpy. Let stand for 10 minutes. 4. Spray waffle iron with cooking spray. Ladle batter into the iron and close. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden and crisp. 5. Remove from the iron and keep warm to one side, covered loosely with aluminum foil. Cook remaining waffles in the same fashion. 6. To serve: Stack waffles on plates and top with blueberries. Tip: For a lower carb count, replace the blueberries with blackberries or raspberries.
