Long Island Children’s Museum Dig Zone Is Now Open Second New Permanent Exhibit In Less Than A Year Invites Children To Build, Dig And Discover Long Island Children’s Museum is giving young builders a place to dream big with the opening of Dig Zone, an interactive construction-themed exhibit where children can scoop, shovel, haul and explore through hands-on play. As the second new permanent exhibit to open at LICM this year, Dig Zone represents the Museum’s continued investment in creating fresh, engaging experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity and learning for Long Island families. Designed for children of all ages, Dig Zone transforms a simple pile of sand into an exciting construction site. Visitors can dig with real tools, load sand into construction vehicles, operate a hand-cranked conveyor belt, and work together to move materials across the job site. Every

scoop and shovel introduces concepts like engineering, simple machines, cause and effect, collaboration and problem-solving through play. “Children naturally learn by doing,” said Ashley Niver, Director of Education at Long Island Children’s Museum. “Dig Zone gives families the freedom to experiment, build, collaborate and imagine together while developing important STEM and socialemotional skills in a joyful, hands-on environment.” Dig Zone joins Saltwater Stories: We Need the Sea & the Sea Needs Me, which opened in October of 2025, as one of the Museum’s newest permanent additions. Together, the exhibits reflect LICM’s commitment to continually evolving the Museum experience for returning visitors while remaining rooted in the

power of play. For many Long Island families, LICM is more than a one-time destination— it’s a place children return to again and again as they grow. State Announces Grants For Vessel Wastewater Infrastructure To Stop Sewage Discharge Into Waterways ecosystems. “Boaters have an innate love for the water, and when proper discharge options are available, few would choose to spoil the very places where they recreate,” Martinez said. “Expanding investments in this program will make it easier for vessel operators to comply with the environmental safeguards that protect our water from harmful pollution. I thank Governor Hochul for her continued commitment to Long Island and our state’s waterways.” While most state coastal waters and connecting waterways are designated No Discharge Zones where vessel sewage disposal is illegal, compliance relies heavily on access to proper infrastructure. Small pump-out stations and mobile pump-out boats provide a convenient way

Long Island marinas and municipalities can receive up to $80,000 in funding for wastewater pump-out infrastructure through expanded grants available from New York’s Clean Vessel Assistance Program, state Sen. Monica R. Martinez and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced. The increased funding aims to improve water quality across Long Island and throughout the state by preventing untreated sewage from entering recreational waters. From his first shop in Copiague to the iconic Bunger Surf Shop in Babylon Village, the Bunger family built not only a successful business but also an enduring legacy. Today, the shop proudly holds the distinction of being the oldest surf company store in North America to have never changed ownership or location. Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said Charlie Bunger’s story is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that has long defined the Town of Babylon. “Charlie Bunger turned a passion into an institution that has become part of Babylon’s identity,” Schaffer said. “For more than six decades, the Bunger family has inspired generations of surfers, supported our local

Captree State Park To Host Snapper & Crab Fishing Derby The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Long Island Region and Captree Bait and Tackle are pleased to announce that the annual Snapper and Crab Fishing Derby at Captree State Park will be held on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm each day. The Snapper & Crab Fishing Derby is held to encourage children to discover and enjoy fishing and crabbing. Children 16 years old and younger are welcome to participate. The tournament is free; however, the standard $8 vehicle use fee will be in effect. There are numerous fishing locations throughout Captree State

Park. Participants are welcome to bring their own equipment or buy it at Captree Bait and Tackle. The shop will be open for sales from 6:30 am – 7:00 pm each day of the tournament. The last weigh in will take place at 1:00 pm, followed by an awards ceremony. Both the snappers and crabs will be weighed alive and live release is encouraged. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third heaviest fish in each age category (7 years and younger; 8-12 years old and 13-16 years old) and to the top three heaviest crabs overall, both Saturday and Sunday. Winners must be present to receive their prize. Captree State Park is located on Ocean Parkway in Babylon. It can be reached

Family, friends, elected officials, and members of the local surfing community gathered to celebrate the dedication of Charlie Bunger Sr. Way, honoring a man whose passion for surfing helped shape both an industry and generations of Long Islanders.
