Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Andrew Monteleone announced that the Town is hiring counselors for the summer GAP program, a day camp designed for developmentally disabled children and young adults ages 5-21. The camp runs from June 29th to August 7th at two locations- Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa, and Syosset-Woodbury Park in Woodbury.
“The Town’s GAP Program provides a unique socialrecreational experience for developmentally disabled individuals, encouraging socialization in a group setting,” said Supervisor
Saladino. “With the support and encouragement of our excellent staff, participants develop friendships that extend well beyond the program.”

As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, some may wonder where the name “America” comes from. According to the Library of Congress, it is derived from Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who suggested the lands reached by Christopher Columbus in 1492 were part of a separate continent. In 1507, German mapmaker Martin Waldseemüller honored Vespucci by naming the region “America” on a map— the first to depict it as a separate continent—now held by the Library of Congress and often called “America’s Birth Certificate.”
Small business is big business across much of North America. Small businesses boast a notable presence in the United States, where the Small Business Administration reports such establishments account for 99 percent of the nation’s firms.
Since 1963, the President of the United States has declared National Small Business Week to recognize small businesses as the job creators, builders, and innovators of America’s economy. Supporting these businesses is important, and here’s just a few reasons why:
• Small businesses are significant employers. The term “small business” can be misleading, particularly in terms of job creation. While small businesses are generally described as firms with fewer than 500 employees, recent data from the U.S. Small Business Administration indicated small companies accounted for two-thirds of employment growth across the U.S. over the last quarter century, ultimately creating around 13 million jobs during that time period.
• Small business spending is more likely to stay in the local community. Data from the American Independent Business Alliance indicates 48 percent of each purchase at a local independent business was recirculated locally. By comparison, just 14 percent of purchases at chain stores was recirculated locally. That means more than three times as much money is staying in communities when consumers buy from locally owned businesses compared to chain retailers.
• Innovative o erings: Small businesses are not beholden to corporate policies or franchise restrictions, so they can more readily bring new life to existing ideas and trends. Small businesses can and often do o er customers di erent options that larger retailers cannot match.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will once again host the prestigious Special Olympics Spring Games in partnership with Special Olympics New York. Held this year in partnership
with Massapequa Schools, the event will take place at Berner Middle School on Saturday, May 2nd. The games will include a full day of competitive track and field events for over 700 athletes supported by more than 300 coaches.
These athletes – children and adults with intellectual disabilities – have dedicated months to training for an Olympic-style competition that will culminate with the contest during these Spring Games.

Spring Games provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase the hard work, dedication, talents, and tremendous athletic achievements of these special athletes, while also paving the way to eliminate social barriers
and stereotypes differentlyabled individuals face,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town of Oyster Bay is very proud to be a partner with Special Olympics New York and thank the Massapequa School District for their assistance in making this year’s event a great success.”

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently attended a Bike Safety Day hosted by the Massapequa Kiwanis Club and Nassau County Police Department at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. The event included police-led safety demonstrations, including learning the
importance of riding responsibly, wearing a helmet, and preventing reckless riding. A fun obstacle course was also available for participants to enjoy.

Frank Cassano of Massapequa is celebrating his 100th birthday, on April 29th, 2026, marking a century of family, craftmanship, and community. Born the youngest of ten children and a twin to boot, Frank grew up known as “Baseball Frank,” a nickname earned from his love of the game and his natural athletic ability. He went on to become a licensed Pan American aircraft mechanic at JFK’s Mod Shop, where he worked until retiring at the early age of 65. Frank was known for his skill with tools, his ability to fix anything, and his willingness to help family, friends, and neighbors.
Throughout his life, Frank enjoyed golf, tennis, racquetball, and traveling to places like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Hilton Head, Florida, and
Las Vegas. In his later years, he continued working part-time at the library, a window company, and the Oceanside School District before fully retiring in his early 80s. Today, he enjoys bocce, bingo, Wii bowling, and community events at his clubhouse.
Frank’s greatest joy is his family: his wife, three children, seven grandchildren, and six
great-grandchildren, along with dozens of nieces, nephews, and their families. His secrets to life include staying calm, looking your best even on tough days, taking care of your health, and appreciating every moment.
Frank’s family proudly celebrates his remarkable 100 years and the inspiration he is to everyone.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Massapequa Village Mayor Danny Pearl announced a partnership with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) to host a ‘Shed the Meds’ Drug Take Back Day at Massapequa Park Village Hall on Saturday, May 2, 2026 from 10:00am – 1:00pm
“This Drug Take Back Day is a great opportunity to rid your medicine cabinet of old and unwanted prescription drugs,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Through proper disposal of old medications, we can prevent them from
contaminating the environment through improper disposal and also keep them out of the wrong hands and away from young people.”
In cooperation with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department, the Town and Village will host this event at Massapequa Park Village Hall, in the back parking lot. This program is anonymous. For those who cannot attend this Drug Take Back Day, disposal containers are located at all Police Precincts throughout the county for safe deposit.
For those looking to turn in unused or
expired medication, be sure to make sure of the following:
• If left in original container, please remove all personal information from label.
• Liquid medication will not be accepted
• Illicit substances are also not part of this initiative.
• Intra-venous solutions, injectables, and syringes will be accepted.
