journey as a writer, including how creativity, perseverance and imagination play a key role in developing engaging stories. Through interactive discussions, he encouraged young learners to embrace their own ideas, use their imaginations freely, and
find their unique voices in writing.
The event not only inspired a love of reading and storytelling, but also reinforced the importance of creativity in the classroom. Students left the presentation feeling
motivated to explore their own storytelling abilities and bring their ideas to life on the page.
The district extends its gratitude to the PTA and the Amityville community, whose support and
collaboration made this memorable and enriching experience possible for Park Avenue students.

South Bay's Neighbor celebrates local small businesses!
Small business is big business across much of North America. Small businesses boast a notable presence in the United States, where the Small Business Administration reports such establishments account for 99 percent of the nation’s firms.
Since 1963, the President of the United States has declared National Small Business Week to recognize small businesses as the job creators, builders, and innovators of America’s economy. Supporting these businesses is important, and here’s just a few reasons why:
• Small businesses are significant employers. The term “small business” can be misleading, particularly in terms of job creation. While small businesses are generally described as firms with fewer than 500 employees, recent data from the U.S. Small Business Administration indicated small companies accounted for two-thirds of employment growth across the U.S. over the last quarter century, ultimately creating around 13 million jobs during that time period.
• Small business spending is more likely to stay in the local community. Data from the American Independent Business Alliance indicates 48 percent of each purchase at a local independent business was recirculated locally. By comparison, just 14 percent of purchases at chain stores was recirculated locally. That means more than three times as much money is staying in communities when consumers buy from locally owned businesses compared to chain retailers.
• Innovative o erings: Small businesses are not beholden to corporate policies or franchise restrictions, so they can more readily bring new life to existing ideas and trends. Small businesses can and often do o er customers di erent options that larger retailers cannot match.
As Small Business Week approaches, take a moment to think about how you can support local small businesses right here on Long Island. And as always, thank you for your readership - your support means so much to our very own small business.

Park Avenue Celebrates PSEG Long Island’s Lineworkers
Under sunny skies and warm spring temperatures, more than 600 students from Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in Amityville gathered outdoors on April 17 to celebrate and thank the hardworking lineworkers of PSEG Long Island ahead of Lineworker Appreciation Day.
Students in third, fourth and fifth grade spent weeks
preparing for the special event, creating colorful, heartfelt posters in art class to show their gratitude. Their efforts came to life during a lively outdoor celebration that brought together the entire student body, teachers, administrators and visiting lineworkers for a memorable afternoon of appreciation and learning.
PSEG Long Island
crews arrived with three large utility trucks and their Mobile Electric Safety Unit — a 40-foot, interactive model of the electric distribution system — giving students a rare, hands-on look at the work that keeps their community powered.
Throughout the day, students rotated through three outdoor sessions,
where they proudly presented their handmade posters to the lineworkers, explored the utility vehicles up close, and engaged in an interactive electric safety demonstration. The presentation highlighted common electrical hazards and taught students practical ways to stay safe around electricity at home and in their neighborhoods.
The event combined education, community connection and celebration, offering students a meaningful opportunity to recognize the essential role lineworkers play — especially during storms and emergencies — while enjoying a beautiful spring day outside.
Lineworker Appreciation Day is observed annually
to honor the skilled professionals who build, maintain and restore the electrical infrastructure that powers homes, schools and businesses.
The smiles, cheers and hand-delivered artwork made it clear: Park Avenue Memorial’s students won’t soon forget the day they got to say “thank you” in person.

Kayak Open House Set For May 2–3
