PSEG Long Island Celebrates Earth Month With Free Trees

PSEG Long Island is celebrating Earth Day all month long by distributing free trees and handing out LED lightbulbs and reusable shopping bags at numerous locations throughout Long Island.

“At PSEG Long Island, Earth Day is a time to showcase the ways that we can help the environment and also help drive affordability over the long term,” said Scott Jennings, PSEG Long Island’s president and COO. “Customers who strategically plant trees in their yards can save up to 20% on their home’s summer energy bills once the trees are fully grown, while also improving air quality and reducing storm water runoff for all residents across Long Island and the Rockaways.”

Energy Saving Trees giveaway

PSEG Long Island, Suffolk County, and the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity

(RISE) are partnering with the PSEG Foundation and the Arbor Day Foundation to

provide 500 customers with a free tree. For customers in Suffolk and Nassau counties,

the free, energy-saving trees can be reserved at https:// get.arborday.org/pseg until all trees are claimed. The program highlights how planting the right trees in the right location can reduce utility bills and promote ongoing system reliability.

The trees will be available at the following locations. Suffolk County (online reservation required)

Wednesday, April 22 - 9 AM to noon

Lee Dennison Building, 100 Vets Memorial Hwy., Hauppauge

All reserved trees will be held until noon, when they will become available on a first-come, first-served basis. Nassau County (online reservation required)

Saturday, April 25 - 9 AM to noon

PSEG Long Island Customer Service Center, 175 E. Old Country Rd., Hicksville

All reserved trees will be held until noon, when they will become available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Energy-Saving Trees online tool helps customers estimate the annual energy savings that will result from planting trees in the most

strategic location near their homes or businesses. All participating customers will receive one tree and are expected to care for and plant it at the location provided by the online tool, taking into account utility wires and obstructions. The types of trees offered include river birch, flowering dogwood, red oak, American elm, and Japanese cedar.

“Trees add beauty to neighborhoods and provide places of respite, along with many other benefits such as helping reduce energy consumption and filter pollutants that may negatively affect community health and wellbeing,” said Calvin Ledford, president of the PSEG Foundation. “The PSEG Foundation is proud to support the EnergySaving Trees program, which will help provide 500 trees to customers on Long Island and in the Rockaways. We are excited that our employees can volunteer to be part of this initiative, distributing the trees and sharing energy efficiency information, and help create a more environmentally sustainable ecosystem across Long Island and the

Rockaways.” LED lightbulbs and shopping bags

PSEG Long Island volunteers will also be in local communities throughout the month to share information about energy-saving and financial assistance programs, distribute reusable shopping bags, and hand out free LED lightbulbs to save customers money and energy: April 25 - 10 AM to 2 PM Family Earth Day @ Elwood Park, 309 Cuba Hill Rd., Elwood April 30 - 9 AM to Noon Huntington YMCA, 60 Main St., Huntington Serving the community

PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program. There is no definitive age when a child may need to get eyeglasses. However, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthal-mology and Strabismus notes that children’s visual systems are still developing during the first 12 years of their life, and during this period wearing glasses can be important for normal vision development. Glasses can help straighten crossed or misaligned eyes, bolster weak vision caused by differences in vision between a child’s eyes, and even protect the stronger eye. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children begin vision screening around age 3 and receive annual screenings each year at ages 4, 5 and 6. After that, screening is recommended when children turn 8, 10, 12, and 15. Of course, parents who begin to suspect their children are having trouble with their vision are urged to take the child to an ophthalmologist once such suspicions arise. Some notable signs include inexplicable declines in academic performance, children sitting closer to the television than they once did and children’s own remarks regarding their vision if they say anything at all.

Babylon Students Recognized In Statewide PTA Arts Competition

Five Babylon School District students advanced to the state level of the PTA Reflections contest, a national arts competition that invites students to submit original works for judging. Kira Kubat and Chloe Maebara were recognized in the dance choreography category, Dylan Tourt in music composition category, and Casey Crowley and Kaiyah

Tacahashi in the visual arts category. In addition to being recognized at the state level of the contest, Chloe and Kaiyah earned the state PTA’s Award of Merit.

This year’s theme, “I Belong,” challenged young artists to explore identity, community, and connection through their creative expression. Entries were judged on creativity, technique, and

interpretation of the theme, with works advancing from local PTA units through council and district levels before reaching state consideration.

New York State received 545 submissions from county-level competitions this year, ultimately awarding 111 entries with Awards of Merit.

Communities across Long Island and the nation will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, April 24, 2026, with events dedicated to tree planting, environmental education, and the preservation of natural resources.

Arbor Day is an annual observance that encourages individuals and organizations to plant and care for trees, highlighting their essential role in improving air quality, conserving energy, supporting wildlife, and enhancing community landscapes.

The main Arbor Day event on Long Island in 2026 will be Branches in Bloom: A Spring Festival at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park on Sunday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free, family-friendly festival will showcase blooming magnolias and cherry trees, along with educational exhibits, guided tours, live music, and activities for all ages.

Additional celebrations include an Arbor Day event at Bayard Cutting Arboretum on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring free, family-friendly programming centered on the importance of trees and conservation.

Suffolk County will also mark the occasion with its “Plant it Forward” initiative, launching April 24 as part of the Suffolk County 250.

The initiative introduces a Living Legacy Tree Registry to document tree plantings across the county in honor of the milestone celebration.

In addition, PSEG Long

Island, in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, will promote proper tree planting through customer programs designed to enhance energy efficiency and support reliable service.

Residents are encouraged to take part in local events, plant trees at home, and support conservation efforts throughout their communities. For the most up-to-date event details or to register for activities, visitors should check the official websites of the Planting Fields Foundation and Bayard Cutting Arboretum.

Seven Things You Should Know About Earth Day

Earth Day began in 1970, inspiring 20 million Americans to take action. It was sparked by environmental disasters that demanded change. It led to landmark laws like the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act.

Today, it’s celebrated in more than 190 countries.

Over one billion people participate each year.

The date April 22 was chosen to engage students nationwide.

Earth Day efforts have planted hundreds of millions of trees globally.
