Deer Park Resident Terri Nelson-Morolla
Named Suffolk County 2026 Woman of Distinction
Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) and his legislative colleagues recognized Deer Park resident Terri Nelson-Morolla as the 2026 Suffolk County Woman of Distinction at the General Meeting of the Legislature on Tuesday, March 10 where she received a Special Proclamation signed by all 18 Legislators.
Ms. Nelson-Morolla was selected by Legislator Donnelly as the Legislative District 17 honoree before being chosen as the county-wide “Woman of Distinction” by the Suffolk County Women’s Advisory Commission.
A lifelong Deer Park resident and graduate of Deer Park schools, Ms. Nelson-Morolla has shown remarkable dedication to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. After her son Anthony was diagnosed with autism in 2005, she turned that experience into an undertaking of advocacy and service. Since 2008 she has served as a team
captain for Autism Speaks, leading Anthony’s All Starz and providing significant support for families through various fundraising efforts. Within the Deer Park School District, she also served as Fundraiser Chairperson for the Special Education Parent Faculty Club.
Ms. Nelson-Morolla has also supported the Deer Park Best Buddies Club, raising funds for the Long Island Best Buddies Friendship Ball and working with the Town of Babylon to advance sensory-friendly initiatives for neurodiverse families, including efforts for a sensory park and sensoryfriendly hours at Geiger Water Park in Deer Park. She is also involved with the Deer Park Historical Association and recently co-chaired the organization’s popular annual Trunk or Treat event.
“Terri Nelson-Morolla selflessly found purpose in her son’s diagnosis, transforming a life-changing moment into a lifelong mission of caring
and advocacy,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Her leadership and generosity have uplifted countless families and make her truly deserving of being named Suffolk County’s Woman of Distinction and I thank the Woman’s Advisory Commission for selecting her. It is a privilege to know her as our Deer Park neighbor and an honor to lead in giving her the recognition she so truly deserves.”
The Suffolk County Woman of Distinction Award was established in 2002 to give each County Legislator the opportunity to honor one constituent who resides in his or her legislative district and has demonstrated leadership, involvement and commitment to the community outside of her job responsibilities. From that group of candidates, the Suffolk County Women’s Advisory Commission selects a single county-wide “Woman of Distinction.”
Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly honors Terri Nelson-Morolla as the county-wide Woman of Distinction, in addition to being the 17th Legislative District Honoree, at the General Meeting of the Legislature on Tuesday, March 10 in Riverhead.

Please remember to have your little bunnies bring along their baskets for this egg-stra special day. It’s going to be quite the hoppening!
Geiger Park is located at 130 Grant Boulevard in Deer Park.

Easter eggs are decorated in many hues before they’re ultimately hidden for youngsters to find. While pastel-colored eggs are the norm, one color has particular religious significance for those who want to go a bit bolder with their egg displays. It is tradition among Orthodox
Christians to exchange red eggs. According to History. com, red eggs are associated with Mary Magdalene and her role in Christianity. After the Ascension of Christ, Mary Magdalene went to the Roman emperor and greeted him with “Christ is Risen.”
He then stated, “Christ has not risen no more than

that egg is red (pointing to an egg on his table).” After making the statement, the egg turned blood red. Mary Magdalene then began preaching Christianity to him, and the red egg has come to symbolize the blood of Christ redeeming the world.
The exact origins of April Fool’s Day are unknown, though historians have some interesting theories regarding the dawn of this day devoted to pranks. Some historians have linked April Fool’s Day to the festival of Hilaria in ancient Rome. According to History.com, Hilaria was celebrated by the followers of the cult of Cybele at the end of March. During the festival, celebrants dressed up in disguises and mocked fellow citizens. Another theory suggests April Fool’s Day might be linked to the transition from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in France in 1582. The news of that transition, which officially recognized the start of the new year as January 1 after it had been April 1, reached some people’s ears more quickly than others’. Those who were slow to get the news continued to celebrate April 1 as the start of a new year, inspiring others to mock them and refer to them as “April fools.”

Easter is a day of great joy for faithful Christians. Easter celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is detailed in the New Testament. Easter is what’s known as a moveable feast, which means it’s not celebrated on the same date each year. Easter’s date in 2026 is Sunday, April 5. Easter also is celebrated on a different day within Christian churches. Orthodox Christians do not celebrate Easter on the same day as non-Orthodox Christians. History. com notes Orthodox Christians follow the Julian calendar when determining when to celebrate Easter. Orthodox Easter will take
place between April 4 and May 8, following the first full moon after Passover. Non-orthodox Christians follow the Gregorian calendar, which was established by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Under the Gregorian calendar, churches determined Easter will be held on the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox. These disparities are why Orthodox churches, which are primarily located in Russia, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, and Bulgaria, observe Easter on a later date than non-Orthodox churches. In 2026, Orthodox Christians will celebrate Easter on April 12.
