Bilingual Seaford Seniors Earning Distinguished Diploma Designation

Nearly a third of Seaford High School’s Class of 2026 will graduate with the prestigious New York State Seal of Biliteracy, reflecting their mastery of both English and at least one world language. The 53 seniors earning the seal is the largest number since it was introduced as a diploma designation in 2022.

World languages and ENL lead teacher Patricia Foley, who serves as the Seal of Biliteracy coordinator, said this the fifth class of Seaford students with Seal of Biliteracy recipients. This year’s candidates reflect five world languages –French, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Students can earn the Seal of Biliteracy in a world language taught in school, spoken at home or self-studied. Seaford offers French and Spanish. For the world language component, each candidate must complete a cultural comparison project on a topic of his or her choosing, then present to a panel of educators in the target language and answer questions. In October, seniors visited the library and worked with Joanna McCloskey, the high school librarian, for research guidance. The presentations took place in January and February.

“They had a wide variety of topics, based on personal interests,” Ms. Foley said. “A lot of them picked topics that are current globally, which gives a good perspective of who they are and where they want to go when they leave Seaford High School.”

Rihana Miah is earning the Seal of Biliteracy in French, a language she started studying in eighth grade. Learning about the culture of French-speaking countries across the world was the most rewarding part of the experience, she said. Her cultural comparison was on opinions in France and in the United States of the Israel-Palestine conflict. She hopes that earning the Seal of Biliteracy will open doors for her.

“It will make me stand out for prospective jobs and give me more opportunities in the future,” Rihana said.

Nick Kanellopoulos has been learning Spanish since seventh grade and wanted to pursue the Seal of Biliteracy because it has been a strength for him. He wants to work in finance in the future and said having the ability to speak other languages will be beneficial. Additionally, Nick loves to travel and his mastery of Spanish will help him communicate with others. His cultural comparison project focused on the

CSEA Recognition as Collective Bargaining Unit

At the March 9, 2026 Seaford Public Library Board of Trustees meeting the Board passed the following resolution:

WHEREAS, the Board of the Seaford Public Library has determined that a majority of these employees employed by the Library have designated CSEA as their agent for collective bargaining; and

WHEREAS, the Board has decided to voluntarily recognize CSEA as the collective bargaining agent for these employees as part of that unit;

efforts of the United States and Spain to combat the negative effects of fast food.

Gokay Sezer will earn the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish, the language he learned in school, and Turkish, which he has been speaking a home since childhood. He was motivated by his older brother, who earned the designation three years ago.

“I like learning new languages, so I can communicate with more people and learn new cultures,” Gokay said, adding that learning two languages as a child helped him when he started learning a third language in middle school.

For his Turkish cultural comparison project, Gokay compared the effects of inflation on home and grocery prices in the United States and Turkey.

Ms. Foley said it is gratifying to see the number of seniors pursuing the Seal of Biliteracy increase every year. She commended this year’s candidates on their hard work not just on their cultural comparison projects, but on their dedicated immersion into world languages and cultures over several years.

“It really does open the door for them,” she said, “because employers are looking for people who are bilingual.”

A Powerful New Memoir Explores Love, Waiting, And The Unspoken Realities Of Caregiving

And I Wait…, a deeply moving debut memoir, offers an intimate look into the emotional landscape of caregiving, resilience, and the quiet moments that shape us.

Through honest and reflective storytelling, And I Wait… captures the experience of standing beside a loved one through illness—where hope, uncertainty, and strength coexist. With a voice that is both compassionate and unflinching, the author invites readers into the spaces often left unspoken: the waiting rooms, the pauses, and the life that exists between before and after.

This memoir

resonates with caregivers, healthcare professionals, and anyone who has faced the complexity of loving someone through difficult transitions. It challenges the notion that there is “nothing more to be done,” offering instead a perspective rooted in presence, dignity, and enduring connection.

And I Wait… is now available on Amazon.

For more information, please visit: https://a.co/ d/0aCvJFMM

About the Author

The author brings a unique perspective shaped by both personal experience and a deep understanding of care, illuminating the emotional truths that

connect us all.

Dr. MaryAnn Fragola, Doctor of Nursing Practice, is Chief of Wellness Services at New York Cancer and Blood Specialists, where she specializes in Supportive and Palliative care. For more than twenty-five years, she has guided patients and families through serious illness, focusing on dignity, comfort, and quality of life.

And I Wait… was born from a deeply personal experience. When her father was diagnosed with cancer, Dr. Fragola found herself on the other side of medicine — not as the clinician, but as the daughter. Writing this memoir became

part of her own healing and a way to give voice to the complex emotions caregivers often carry but rarely express.

Through her work and her writing, she remains committed to helping patients and families navigate illness with honesty, compassion, and presence. She hopes this story helps caregivers recognize that many of the thoughts and emotions they experience during illness and grief are more normal than they realize.

Outside of her professional life, she enjoys reading, time with her family, and the loyal companionship of her German shepherds.

Branches in Bloom: A Spring Festival Celebrating Arbor Day

Spring is one of the most magical times at Planting Fields, when the landscape comes alive with color and fragrance. Sweeping groves of magnolias, flowering cherries, and other springblooming trees transform the grounds into clouds of white, pink, and soft yellow, creating a breathtaking seasonal display.

This year, visitors are invited to experience Branches in Bloom, a new spring festival taking root at Planting Fields. Centered on the spectacular collections of magnolias and flowering cherries near the expansive lawn west of the Main House, the festival showcases hundreds of trees at the height of their bloom: an unforgettable celebration of spring in full flower!

What to Expect:

Saturday, Apr. 25 and Sunday, Apr. 26, 11am – 4pm

– Sweeping spring blossoms at peak bloom

– Guided tours of the historic landscape

– Kids Tree Climb with Wonderland Tree Care + Landscapes

Weather permitting. Closes at 2:30pm both days.

– Educational displays & demonstrations

– Live music & performances. Including magic acts, jugglers, and more!

– Family-friendly activities throughout the day Including seedling giveaways, face painting, caricaturists, food trucks, and more!

It’s a chance to slow down. To wander. To look up into canopies of color. To celebrate the trees that shape our environment and define this extraordinary place.

This is spring as it was meant to be experienced.

For nearly four decades, Planting Fields has proudly celebrated Arbor Day and the vital role trees play in our environment. Branches in Bloom honors that long-standing tradition while embracing a new way to experience spring at Planting Fields. Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects Made With LEGO Bricks Coming To Old Westbury Gardens

Beautiful And Inspirational Exhibition Exploring Art And Nature Set To Open Friday, May 15th For OWG Members, May 16th To The Public

Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects? Made with LEGO? bricks, an awardwinning and recordbreaking exhibition that uses beautiful works of art made from simple toy blocks to explore animal endangerment, the balance of ecosystems, and mankind’s relationship with nature is coming to Old Westbury Gardens from Friday, May 15th, 2026, through Monday, September 7, 2026. Old Westbury Gardens

Members can enjoy an exclusive preview of the exhibition on Friday, May 15, before it opens to the public beginning Saturday, May 16.

“At Old Westbury Gardens, we believe that meaningful encounters with nature can spark curiosity and creativity at any age,” said Maura Brush, President and CEO of Old Westbury Gardens. “Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects beautifully captures that idea, using art to illuminate the remarkable relationships that shape the natural world. We look forward

to welcoming visitors to explore these imaginative works throughout the gardens this season.”

Produced by Imagine, Nature Connects depicts important topics that the New York artist, Sean Kenney, holds dear, from protecting an animals’ habitat, to planting a garden.

Nature Connects further shows that just as LEGO pieces interconnect, everything in nature is interconnected in a delicate balance. The narratives, along with the intricate displays, also explore the importance of conservation, the balance of ecosystems, predator/prey relationships, as well as the relationships between humankind and the natural world.

The exhibition allows visitors to appreciate both nature and the sculptures as something beautiful, and to inspire them to go home and create something wonderful themselves.

Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects? Made with LEGO? bricks is open daily (except Tuesdays) to the

public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a limited engagement through September 7, 2026.

This event is included with admission. General admission is $22; $20 for

ages 62+ and full-time students with valid ID; $12 for children ages 7–17; and free for children 6 and under. Tickets will be available to purchase at www.oldwestburygardens. org.

Sleep Is Restorative And Essential For Children

Sleep is restorative and essential for ensuring our minds and bodys operate at peak capacity, but many kids are not getting enough sleep. According to WebMD, bedtimes have gradually become later as children must contend with social, family and school activities. This is especially true for older children. WebMD says that most 12-year-olds now go to bed around 9 p.m., getting an average of 9 hours of sleep, even though 12 hours is ideal for kids who are 12.
