Grief And Loss Peer-Led Support Group

Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT), along with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), Families in Support of Treatment (FIST), Family & Children’s Association, (FCA) and Human Understanding and

Growth Services (HUGS) are joining together to offer a free grief and loss peer-led support group. The group will meet at the East End THRIVE location, at 680 Elton Street, Riverhead, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month. The focus of the support group will be to explore ways to find comfort, share support and begin healing for those who have lost a loved one.

“Losing a loved one can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to go through it alone,” said Paulette Phililppe, founder of Gabriel’s Giving Tree.

Copiague MS Students Shine

Several Copiague Middle School students earned top recognition at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair on March 12 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The prestigious event brings together talented young scientists from across the region to present their research and innovative projects.

The following Copiague Middle School students were recognized for their

outstanding work:

• First place: Lenna Karwowska, “Investigating the Comparative Effects of Tapioca Starch-Based and Polylactic-Based Bioplastic on the Mortality of Artemia salina.”

• Second place: Cole Sells and Juliette Peralta, “Prosthetic vs. Human.”

• Second place: Yeslie Ventura, “The Effect Temperature Has on Magnetism.”

• Third place: Anala Amin,

“Smart Sprouting.”

• Honorable mention: Gabriella Olszowy, “Roll with It!”

Students spent months researching, experimenting and preparing their projects before presenting their findings to judges and peers at the competition. Their success at LISEF reflects their curiosity, dedication and commitment to scientific exploration.

The Easter Bunny Hops Into Northeast Elementary School

On March 31, Northeast Elementary School in Amityville was filled with giggles, excitement, and the soft thump of little feet as the Easter Bunny made a special visit to the district’s youngest learners.

Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students had the magical opportunity to meet and greet the Bunny, exchanging high fives, warm hugs and plenty of smiles. The celebration included an Easter-themed breakfast and a fun-filled Easter egg hunt, giving students a chance to search for colorful eggs and enjoy sweet treats. Teachers joined in the festive fun, sporting playful rabbit ears alongside their students, while many little learners proudly wore their own ears as they hopped along with the Easter excitement.

This annual visit is a beloved tradition at Northeast, bringing joy, laughter and a touch of spring magic to the school community. It’s a heartwarming reminder of the special moments that make early childhood education so memorable.

Long Island’s largest and most premier car show experience returns to TOBAY Beach on Sunday, April 26th, from 11am to 4pm. “Car Show Long Island” features hundreds of automobiles, trucks, military vehicles, and emergency service vehicles. A live concert performed by That 70’s Band will take place during the day, followed by trophy presentations. The event is free for spectators.

Sleep Is Restorative And Essential For Children

Sleep is restorative and essential for ensuring our minds and bodys operate at peak capacity, but many kids are not getting enough sleep. According to WebMD, bedtimes have gradually become later as children must contend with social, family and school activities. This is especially true for older children. WebMD says that most 12-year-olds now go to bed around 9 p.m., getting an average of 9 hours of sleep, even though 12 hours is ideal for kids who are 12.

More Than 40 New Members Inducted Into Fine Arts Honor Society

O’Connell Copiague High School chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society on March 5.

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School celebrated its top musicians and artists at the Fine Arts Honor Society induction ceremony on March 5. Joined by family, friends, school district administrators and Copiague Board of Education members, the selected students were honored as they pledged their commitment to the arts.

As guests entered the cafeteria, studentmusicians played various selections. Throughout the cafeteria, artwork was on display showcasing some of the works of the newest inductees.

Tri-M Music Honor Society advisor Eric Dobmeier welcomed attendees to the ceremony and presented former Copiague music teacher Paul Mercieca with the honorary life membership award. Tri-M officers then spoke about the five pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship. Students must demonstrate these five pillars and also be enrolled in musical ensemble for at least two semesters to be inducted.
