Run for the Warriors Participants of all ages included veterans, their loved ones and others who wanted to honor the sacrifices made by the members of our military overseas.

A number of wounded veterans participated in the run, which included three routes of varied distances (10K, 5K and 1 mile), by riding hand and foot cycles. Many participants

honored loved ones in the military, some of whom gave the ultimate sacrifice, by carrying signs and American flags as they completed the course.

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. Kelly. “Participation in these courses prepares our students for collegelevel work and offers them the opportunity to earn college credits. The Board of Education and administration are

committed to offering a rich program that prepares students for the demands of college and the work place.” Participation in AP classes climbed from 122 students in the 20152016 school year to 222 students in the 2016-2017 school year. Amityville students took a total of 411 AP exams in 2017, a 51 percent increase from the previous year. The number of students scoring a 3 or higher grew by 55 percent.

Amityville was one of 447 school districts in the U.S. and Canada to be named to the AP District Honor Roll. Placement on the list indicates that a district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP. It also shows that students among different subgroups are taking these exams and succeeding.

Second-graders visited several continents without leaving their classroom at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. It was part of their Holidays Around the World study with teachers Kerrin Faulkner and Jenny Smith. During the two-week unit, children learned about holiday traditions and customs in the United States and eight other countries. Each day featured a craft and a snack, such as the study on Sweden in which students made St. Lucia crowns and

ate cinnamon buns. For Israel, they were treated to chocolate candy known as gelt and jelly doughnuts called sufganiyah in addition to making paper dreidels. The German tradition of hiding a pickle led to a scavenger hunt in the classroom, followed by a gingerbread treat. The activity taught students about the origins of many traditions they are accustomed to. It also supported the nonfiction reading and writing unit in the second-grade English language arts curriculum. Students were able to

learn more “expert” words, which are vocabulary words that relate to a specific topic. Additionally, students expanded their literacy skills beyond the English language, such as by learning how to write “Merry Christmas” in Russian. The children kept all of their work in Around the World suitcases and received passport stickers for each country they visited. They improved their knowledge of geography by coloring in each of the nations on a world map.

Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown

up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet. Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much. And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package. In everything, it’s the thought that counts.
