iss Romanelli’s PreKindergarten class at St. Martin of Tours celebrated Fire Safety Month. They learned about the parts of the fire truck, how to stay safe around fire and how to stop, drop and roll. Mr. DeChiaro, a parent of one of the Pre-K students and a firefighter, joined the class. He showed the children what a firefighter’s mask looks like and all the gear a firefighter wears. In recognition of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, Long Island Hearing is joining the Better Hearing Institute (BHI), a member of the Alzheimer’s Association Early Detection Alliance (AEDA), in urging caregivers to address hearing loss in people with Alzheimer’s and to pay attention to their own hearing health. Long Island Hearing will be raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, the importance of early diagnosis, the relationship between Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, and the importance of addressing hearing loss in people with Alzheimer’s. “There are many families within our community coping with Alzheimer’s and the challenges it

But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the symptoms of hearing loss can interact with those common to Alzheimer’s, making the disease more difficult than it might be if the hearing loss had been addressed. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, will use the proceeds of this celebration, its premier fundraiser, to provide critical food support to a network of almost 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other local programs that offer food assistance to the more than 300,000 Long Islanders—over 110,000 of them children—who face hunger each and every day. QUESTION: In order to remove bacterial plaque from our teeth, we have to see it. How is this accomplished? ANSWER: This is done with something called a disclosing agent -- usually a red dye that stains bacteria. You can buy it at any pharmacy. Apply it with a Q-tip (after you brush and floss). Paint the edge of your gum where it meets the teeth. Move the Q-tip along, up and down, following the gum line. Now rinse and look to see where the stain is. Then brush and floss again. You'll notice that although brushing removes some of the stain at the direct edge of the gum, it did not get it all BETWEEN the teeth. Only dental floss will get into these areas to remove bacteria.. Brushing won't. Do this disclosing daily at first until you really know your mouth, and later three times a week. You really won't know if you've effectively removed plaque if you don't disclose. It's like trying to lose weight without checking yourself on a scale. From the office of

Forever An Original By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Albert Capraro, Lindenhurst High School Class of 1961 graduate, Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976 and personal designer of choice to none other than First Lady Betty Ford, passed away on October 8th, 2013 following a brief illness. I consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance and privileged to have interviewed him for a proﬁle for this very column several years ago. Following are excerpts from my original piece, published October 11th, 2006 ... Mr. Capraro’s path to success began to take shape way back in high school while walking the halls of Lindy. His influences ranged from several members of the art department to his beloved guidance counselor, all of whom nurtured his already-outstanding talent for both fashion and film, even going so far

as to attend the “fashion shows” and “movie premieres” he would put on at his home. After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Mr. Capraro landed his first job working with a French designer on Park Avenue. He then moved on to a position with noted designer Joberie, headquartered on Seventh Avenue - Fashion Avenue. From there, he catapulted to the opportunity of a lifetime, working with Oscar de la Renta - his “mentor” - with whom he flourished for eight glorious years. Mr. Capraro eventually started up his own label, of which his first collection was quite a success. As he dryly observed, “I was an ‘overnight’ sensation after ten years.” However, it was exactly this achievement which provided the necessary steppingstone from which there would be no turning back. After reading a favorable review of his clothing line, First

Lady Betty Ford invited Mr. Capraro to a personal consultation at the White House. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro

finds himself equally comfortable designing costumes for a Hicksville High School theatre production – which he has done several times – as he did while living the lavish life of limousines, champagne, starstudded galas and black-tie affairs ... all words which are still “music to (his) ears.” The man who was originally inspired to design by Princess Grace’s wedding gown and who recently donated the original mannequin and about twenty of his designs worn by the First Lady to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives by the simplest of mottos: “Pursue and persist ... Love what you’re doing.” What a lovely person. What outstanding accomplishments. And to think it began all those years ago in the halls of Lindy High School. His is a story that deserves to be shared. And admired by all.

But now, behold, on the far horizon, one sees several stratocumulus clouds revealing their puffy, hoary cotton balls And I fantasize a desire and urge, like a lad, to jump and frolic upon them. When once more the sky appears blue like the calm waters of a tepid tropical sea, I am restored again, breathing deeply and at ease, achieving a state of elation and high spirits. It is the sky’s indigo light and the crepuscular rays of sunshine passing in and through the diaphanous clouds which bestirs one to vibrant fervor and eagerness for life.

Apple Taste Test The kindergarten students in Claudia Nakash’s class at Copiague’s Susan E. Wiley Elementary School participated in an apple taste test that combined their science, English language arts and mathematics units. After sampling red, yellow and green varieties of apples, the kindergartners used adjectives to describe

the taste of each apple and its texture. Following the taste test, they chose their favorite of the three and graphed their results as a class. In a tight competition, the yellow apple narrowly beat out the green for class favorite. “This lesson is a great way for the students to review the properties of science and utilize their

mathematical graphing capabilities,” said Mrs. Nakash. In preparation for the activity, the students read several fiction and nonfiction books about apples, which included learning the history of Johnny Appleseed and where apples come from.

Musical Honors

ensemble. Thousands of students auditioned for this honor last spring at NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festivals held throughout the state. Students were chosen to participate based on their proficiency scores achieved at the festival and teacher recommendations. Anthony and fellow senior Stephanie Boegle (soprano) have also been chosen to represent the district as members of NYSCAME/Suffolk AllCounty Music Ensembles this year. Anthony will perform with the NYSCAME/Suffolk AllCounty High School Symphonic Band and Stephanie will perform with the NYSCAME/ Suffolk All-County High

School Women’s Choir. The rehearsals and concert will take place during November. Similar to the AllState selection process, students were chosen for All-County based on their proficiency scores achieved at the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festivals and teacher recommendations. The All-County festival will showcase the top 11thand 12th-grade students in Suffolk County music programs. The Amityville School District congratulates all of the students and their music teachers, Brian Wishin (band) and Christine Klimek (choral).

FUN FLICKS - On September 26th, the Deauville Gardens PTA were proud to present Wreck It Ralph. The principals, teachers and students, along with their families, gathered on the field at the school and enjoyed watching the movie on the big blowup screen.
