This organization was formed in 2014 when a woman wanted a wig for her daughter who has Alopecia. She reached out to Manny Roberts Hair Replacement, a wig business owned by Dean Riskin and mentioned that her daughter saw one of their wigs on a TV show, worn by someone else who has Alopecia. She immediately felt a sense of relief, realizing she is not the only person who has this condition. Her mother wanted to do anything she could to get her daughter a wig just like this, hence why she reached out to the business who created it.

Aim for adequate rest each night to keep your body in top form. • Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables supply the powerhouse antioxidants that are essential for protecting a body against free radicals. Free radicals may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Serve fruits and/or vegetables with every meal to ensure you’re getting enough antioxidant-rich foods. • Consume fiber and fermented foods. Fiber can help feed the gut microbiome, which is linked to a robust immune system. The microbiome also

may prevent harmful pathogens from entering the body through the digestive tract. Data also suggests that eating more fermented foods can further strengthen and populate healthy bacteria in the gut. • Exercise regularly. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day, advises the American Heart Association. Thirty minutes of exercise each day can go a long way toward keeping the body healthy. One study found that women who consume three alcoholic beverages per week have a 15 percent higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who don’t drink at all. And while research into the connection is limited, a 2009 study found a link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer recurrence. lifestyle: • Sedentary Exercise consumes and controls blood sugar and limits blood levels

Women cannot change their ages, but recognizing the link between age and breast cancer risk is important, as such a recognition may compel more women 55 and older to prioritize cancer screening. Gender and family history are two additional unchangeable risk factors for breast cancer. Women are much more likely to get breast cancer than men. In addition, Breastcancer. org notes that between 5 and 10 percent of breast cancers are believed to be caused by abnormal genes that are passed from parent to child. Women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer. Knowledge of breast cancer, including its various risk factors, is a great weapon against it as women look to reduce their risk of developing the disease.

Diet and exercise can play a pivotal role in reducing breast cancer risk, and it’s important for women to understand just how much good healthy diets and routine exercise can do for them in regard to fighting breast cancer. • Stanford Health Care says some studies suggest limiting dietary fats in the diet, particularly those that come from animals, to reduce breast cancer risk. These include butter, full-fat dairy, poultry skin, and fatty meats. Reducing intake of dietary fats, especially animal fats, may protect against diseases sensitive to hormones, like breast cancer. • Data from the Women’s Healthy Eating and Living study suggests that soy consumption from whole foods and soy milk for any breast cancer type is probably safe, despite

Three talented teens attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) are being recognized by the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) for their exceptional abilities. These gifted young artists are being honored with prestigious awards in the 2020-2021 Scholar-Artist competition and profiled in Newsday. Dance student Isabella Craven of the Half Hollow Hills CSD and Theatre student Shaakirah NazimHarris of the Amityville UFSD have both been named Scholar-Artists. Visual Arts student Emma Fletcher of the Jericho UFSD earned an Award of Merit. They are

all recognized by the LIAA as “the best of the best” on Long Island, artistically and academically. “We are extremely proud of these students and their impressive achievements,” said LIHSA Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker. “Arts are essential to education. As Long Island’s only public arts school, it is our mission to provide a nurturing environment that exposes students to experiences and opportunities they would not have anywhere else. New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. “The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means encouraging donors to take the extra step of

making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these firsttime donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Dr. Love received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. The Amityville Union Free School District’s new full-day pre-kindergarten program officially launched on Sept. 16, as teachers and support staff welcomed children to Northeast Elementary School. As a result of the grade reconfiguration this summer, kindergarten classes moved to Northwest Elementary School, and Northeast became an early childhood education center. There are 10 full-day pre-K classes, with about 120 students enrolled in the program. On the first day, teachers welcomed their first group of students, gave them tours of the school, reviewed classroom rules and health and safety protocols and read stories in the garden. Children were all given individual

boxes of supplies and materials with items such as blocks, crayons and Play-Doh. Principal Dr. Pauline Collins visited the classrooms throughout the day and introduced herself to Amityville’s youngest students. She said that the expansion of pre-K to six hours per day will be a tremendous benefit for children, noting how much development takes place between birth and age 5. “This is a great opportunity for the children,” Dr. Collins said. “We can give them the time they need to become engaged in learning and socialization and build up their skills.” Dr. Collins said that independent exploration is an important part of the pre-K program where

children learn to play and learn through play. Classrooms have been designed with centers that foster curiosity, discovery and interaction with their peers. While those interactions will be different this year due to health and safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Collins said that pre-K will still be a meaningful and productive year in their development. “We will find safe ways for them to do it,” Dr. Collins said. Children are required to wear masks, but will have supervised mask breaks with social distancing practiced during those times. Art, music and physical education classes for now are being held in the pre-K classrooms.
