Stepping Into Sophomore Year On an uncharacteristically cool morning for late August, the incoming class of 2020 at Amityville Memorial High School trickled into the auditorium. Students found their seats and awaited the start of their sophomore orientation. Superintendent Dr. Mary Kelly took the podium and welcomed everyone, remarking that it seemed that their moving up ceremony wasn’t too long ago. She also introduced Amityville’s new high school principal, Maria Andreotti. “We’re lucky to have her with us,” Dr. Kelly said. Andreotti welcomed the sophomores to high school, and opened with a few words expressing her excitement for the upcoming year. “I can’t wait to see what

Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, September 9th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of our present day Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Learn how lighthouse Keepers in the 1860’s to 2017 maintained the light. This event includes a tour of the Lens Building and the Boat House. The tour takes approximately two and a half hours. Over twenty children competed in this year’s ice-cream eating contest as they were cheered on by friends, family and other residents. Winners were awarded by age group. Prepping for the Year The Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Class of 2021 toured their new building, received their schedule, became acquainted with administrators and reconnected with their classmates during summer orientation on August 29th. High school administrators, guidance counselors and teachers welcomed the incoming freshman class, along with their parents, as they received their schedules
and locker assignments for the upcoming school year. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta addressed the students and their families as they gathered in the auditorium for an informational session. “This marks the first step in a very important journey,” Agosta said. “You are now being introduced to the most critical four years in your life that will help prepare you for college and your post-

secondary plans.” Agosta answered some questions generated by students following the spring orientation and also had them preview a “day in the life” of a Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School freshman to give them a better understanding of the building and its workings. Students ended the orientation with a guided tour of the building by members of one of the school’s 30 different clubs.
The Amityville Union Free School District recently welcomed more than a dozen new educators for the 20172018 school year who are eager and anxious to make a positive difference in students’ lives. New teachers attended orientation on August 28th at the Park North Administration Building.
Participants included new teachers in the district, as well as those who have moved into permanent positions. The program included welcome messages from Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly and board of education members, followed by presentations on the district’s academic programs, instructional
technology resources, business manners and evaluation process. Teachers were treated to a trolley ride of the district with Village of Amityville historian Richard Handler. Orientation concluded with teachers visiting their assigned buildings to meet with their respective principals.
