How To Manage Low Bandwidth During Remote Learning Sessions

Virtual Meditation Workshops The lectures consist of instructions on how to meditate, a short meditation sitting and questions and answers. There is a never a charge for any of these workshops. students overcome that challenge, Microsoft offers the following tips on how educators, students and parents can manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions. • Reduce reliance on video during class sessions. Turning video cameras off during live class sessions can help to overcome the challenges posed by low bandwidth, as live video is a key contributor to excessive use of bandwidth. If video must be used, encourage students to turn off their cameras when they are not speaking. • Use pre-recorded content. Pre-recording content enables students to stream video over the internet, saving those with low bandwidth the hassle of downloading large video files to their computers. Microsoft recommends educators who prerecord content for their students to stream to instruct those students to use class time to complete assignments.

Educators can make themselves available via chat to answer questions students may have about their assignments. • Avoid video-based assignments. It can be difficult for students with low bandwidth to send very large files, such as videos. Educators can help students avoid that issue by not requiring them to submit videos as part of their assignments. • Encourage students to sync ﬁles to their devices. Each device is different and each manufacturer has its own instructions on how to sync files to devices. But Microsoft notes that syncing files to a device allows students to read them ofﬂine, which is ideal for students with limited internet connectivity. Low bandwidth poses a challenge for remote learners. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome low bandwidth so students can keep learning.

In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools hastily transitioned from traditional in-person learning to remote learning. This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents. One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help

A SALUTE TO OUR SENIORS - Dominican Village saluted our senior residents on Friday, August 21st for National Senior Citizens Day! Refreshments were hand delivered to over one hundred residents. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks. com, when you enter the charity code FGWIBCC20. SBM Launches COVID-19 Support Group The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives in profound and unprecedented ways, especially for those who have come face to face with the virus themselves. That’s why Stony Brook Medicine is offering virtual support groups to provide professional care for those in our communities who have or have had coronavirus and may be struggling. According to Pastor Dick he had the most amazing ability with the organ; a great sense of humor; he loved his pet Whippet, his Indonesian puppets; his old Mercedes, his house and the old church he and his wife Mary were remodeling for a summer home when Mary passed. He was a wonderful person and a great friend and will be missed. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife Mary. A Memorial service was held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, officiated by The Reverend Randolph Jon Geminder. Cremation was private. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc. Amityville, New York.

Donald A. Marsden, a resident of Hempstead, LI., (formerly of Amityville) died August 20, 2020 at Winthrop University Hospital, Mineola, LI. He was 77 years old. Mr. Marsden was born in Amityville on August 28, 1942 to C. Arthur and Dorothy (Gookin) Marsden. Don was a product of Amityville schools where he graduated valedictorian of the class of 1960. Music was his career; he served as organist for St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in addition to his other interests. According to Rev. Dr. Dick Johns former pastor of St. Mark’s Don sounded good recently but sad about having to give up his position as Music Director due to his failing eyesight.
