The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

Board Receives Construction Update

TENDING TO THEIR GARDEN - The Kiwanis Club of Amityville has been hard at work tending to their garden. Yes, members have become farmers! Under the direction of committee chair, Kevin Smith, they have built raised beds in the Kiwanis Park on Broadway, planted a variety of herbs, vegetables and wild flowers. Every day someone is there watering and tending to the garden. With their harvest they were able to supply the Amityville Senior Center and St. Martin of Tours Parish Outreach Center with bushels of produce. Representatives from BBS Architects and Park East Construction provided board of education members from the Amityville Union Free School District with an update on capital projects at the Aug. 7 board meeting. All work is from the $69.9 million bond referendum approved by voters in March of 2016. At Amityville Memorial High School, a new addition is being build that will include classrooms, science labs, an indoor athletic complex and expanded cafeteria. Interior and exterior block walls are being constructed, and work on all mechanical systems is progressing. Work is ongoing in the existing building to

provide a connection to the new wing. Additionally, the library is being remodeled and expanded and new lighting is being installed in the west parking lot. Fencing has been installed and site work is underway for construction of a new wing at Northwest Elementary School which will include classrooms and a small gymnasium. A new playground is expected to be installed by early September. New concrete steps and ramps are being installed at the entrances to Northwest and Northeast elementary schools. Bathrooms in the nurse’s offices at both schools are being renovated and ADA-compliant bathrooms are being added in four

classrooms at Northeast. The window replacement project at Edmund W. Miles Middle School will be complete once all window treatments have been installed. Structural steel has been added to the roof of Northeast’s gym for a new air conditioning unit. A representative from Western Suffolk BOCES presented the latest demographics and enrollment report. Assistant Superintendent Andrea Pekar presented recommendations from the Curriculum Advisory Committee for new pre-K learning resources and new textbooks for Environmental Science, The Living Environment and Global History 10.

Public Announcement! There are important changes to the school tax relief program that every homeowner should know.

Changes To The Star Program! • If you own your own home, it’s your primary residence, and your income is $500,000 or less, you are eligible for the Basic STAR Program. • If your income is greater than $250,000 and less than or equal to $500,000, you will receive a check for the STAR credit instead of a reduction on your school tax bill. • If your income is $250,000 or less and you are currently receiving the STAR exemption (a direct reduction on your school tax bill in the form of a property tax exemption), you can choose to register for the STAR credit to receive a check instead. • The STAR exemption program is now closed to new applicants. New applicants can only register for the STAR credit. • Homeowners with income greater than $250,000 and less than or equal to $500,000 who currently receive the STAR exemption need not take any additional action to start receiving the STAR credit in the form of a check. • If your income is $250,000 or less and currently receive the STAR exemption but want to receive the STAR credit instead, you have to register with the NY State Department of Taxation and Finance to make the switch. • The taxing authority is giving homeowners an incentive to switch to the STAR credit. STAR credits may increase as much as 2% each year, but the value of the STAR exemption savings cannot increase. • Enhanced STAR is provided to homeowners age 65 and older for their primary residence if their income is $86,300 or less for the 2019-2020 school year. • Enhanced STAR recipients are now required to enroll in the Income Verification Program (IVP). • Homeowners need not register every year for the STAR Program. Once registered, they are automatically reviewed for eligibility each year.
