The students learned about tornadoes and then created their own. They enjoyed using different variables to discover the best way to make a tornado in a jar. Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

John Walters, LPN, Nurse Supervisor at Dominican Village in Amityville, has been named the 2019 Assisted Living Nurse of the Year by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL). The NCAL Awards Program recognizes exemplary assisted living caregivers and programs. The award winners represent the best of the assisted living profession, a sector of long-term care that fosters choice, dignity and independence. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology
departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.

This year marks the 25 year anniversary for American Black Belt Academy, located at 4875 Merrick Road in Massapequa. Started in 1994 by Tom and Lorraine LoVarco as a small modest Karate school located in Massapequa Park it has grown today to be one of the largest most diverse schools in the country. “We started in a small 900 square foot location were I taught all the classes and my wife Lorraine was the office manager,” says Tom LoVarco. Our enrollment began to grow quickly and our students were competing in National tournaments and doing very well. The school started to be recognized for producing top rated
competitors. Changing locations several times in the same area the size of the school is nearly 10 times larger than when it opened. And since opening, the facility has expanded into offering not only high quality American Kenpo classes for kids and adults but now offers a full fitness program, Kids BJJ and MMA, Kickboxing and a Martial Arts After School Program with transportation from all the schools in the Massapequa School District. A full day Martial Arts camp is even available during the summer. They also host two large Karate tournaments each year. Now joined by their children Chris and Danielle along with an amazing
staff of instructors and assistants the school is very organized and extremely professional. The location has 3 large classrooms that gives the ability to offer over 80 classes each week. Allowing for convenient class times and the detailed separation of ages and experience level. The story doesn’t end here. Plans for the future of American Black Belt are still in the making. GRAVITY DEFYING EXPERIMENTS - Fourth grade students participating in the summer elementary school program in the Copiague School District are learning all about the laws of gravity. To test out their knowledge, the class stepped outside for some hands-on experiments. After filling buckets with water, students tested the laws of gravity by swinging their buckets upside down to see if the water would spill. IS CREMATION THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY Today, the question of whether to cremate or not is a real dilemma for many families. I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have served that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain and it is the survivors that must carry on. There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750 and $3,000, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755 to $2,300. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory. It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye and that a funeral service with a wake even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process.

I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s wishes but regretted the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.

Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School Principal Robyn Santiago looked out from the stage at the 213 sixth graders sitting in front of her and smiled. She and the students shared a common bond, one that she will remember for the rest of her life. “This class of sixth graders is very special to me,” she said, “as both they and I entered Park Avenue together three years ago.” She became principal when they became fourth graders, moving up from Northwest Elementary School. Now, she is sending them off to seventh grade at Edmund W. Miles Middle School, which happened
to be the setting for their moving up ceremony on June 25. “I can’t wait to watch your future success,” Ms. Santiago told the students, boasting about their achievements in academics, art and music, while also highlighting their great character. “Stay kind,” she added. Dr. Mary T. Kelly, superintendent of the Amityville Union Free School District, told students that they had been well cared for over the last three years by Park Avenue teachers and staff who were dedicated to their success. Now, the staff at the middle school awaits them and will be ready to
help the students follow their dreams. Dr. Kelly said new opportunities lie ahead such as learning a new language, receiving a Chromebook to use both in school and at home, joining clubs and conducting science research. “There is something here for everyone,” she said. The sixth graders heard from National Junior Honor Society President Daniella Henriquez, who recalled making the same transition two years earlier and how quickly she felt comfortable in her new school. “Coming to the middle school is a new beginning and fresh start,” she said. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District are using their STEM skills to design and test their own rocket ships. They were tasked with creating their own unique ship out of a soda bottle. After the design phase was complete, the students headed out to the field behind the school for launch.
