Community Invited To Help Feed Our Neighbors The food supply at food banks historically drops off in summertime. Coupled with the pandemic and its after-effects, replenishing the diminishing food supply at this time is even more urgent. Enter Power to Feed Long Island – a partnership between Island Harvest Food Bank and PSEG Long Island to rally the Long Island community to donate food to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, there will be largescale collection drives at several local supermarkets, with a goal of restocking warehouse shelves with the equivalent of 21,000 nutritious meals (for 2021). At all locations, there will be a contactless drive-thru area, as well as collection bins, set up from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as follows:

The Charity of the Month for August is

Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27 or exit 67 off the LIE) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun! Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are “scheduled” work days, where members come together and work on whatever needs to be done at that time. However, members can be found working on equipment and projects throughout their free time! LI Live Steamers offers various types of memberships; Junior Membership, for those 16-18 years old, Full Membership, for those over 18 years of age, and Family Membership! Membership starts at only $50/year and there is a one time initiation fee of $100. Please note, only full members can qualify to operate club trains.
If you would like to attend the next public run day, it will take place on Sunday, August 29th. There is no charge for rides on public run days, however they accept donations of any size. Looking to host a birthday party at LI Live Steamers? You can! Reservations must be made to reserve a birthday party with the LI Live Steamers, however there is no limit to how many people can attend. Attendees can bring their own food and/or cake (pizza parties are popular) and the organization provides picnic tables, that when sitting at you will have a great view of the action as multiple trains pass by! Long Island Live Steamers is in need of volunteer electricians, grounds-keepers, carpenters, signal maintainers and many other skilled individuals. Members are assigned to various duties during public run days, which are typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. Some positions a member may be assigned are Ticket Booth Attendants, Ticket Takers, Station Masters and Souvenir Stand Attendants. Members are also encouraged to help out on scheduled “work days” with various tasks, such as landscaping and track work.

Students and their parents may visit area stores or browse online looking for items to make the coming school year a success. Those lists have looked similar for decades, but shopping for school supplies in the pandemic era may prove to be a unique experience.

people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and
trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - recently awarded ten new
scholarships valued at over $11,000. The scholarships were provided to those who are financiallychallenged so that they too can access Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism’s programs. These recent scholarships were awarded to individuals on the Autism Spectrum ranging in age from 10 to 22 years old. They are being used for classes and activities in the Children’s Breakfast Club, Friday Night Social Scene, Culinary Connections, Teen Zumba, Adult Baking, Teen Baking, Teen Technology, Teen Painting, among others. Family Center for Autism’s scholarship funds are generated through private donations and enable the organization to offer scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of its programs. More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria
Schneps. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. can

The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that employers expect to hire 7.2 percent more new college graduates from the class of 2021 than they did from the class of 2020. That’s encouraging news, but recent graduates will still face stiff competition as they look for their first job. Volunteering with an organization in their field can be a great way for current students and recent graduates to get their foot in the door. Even if a volunteering opportunity does not
ultimately lead to a job offer, the experience students gain can help them stand out in a crowded pool of job applicants down the road.

On Chen, MD, interventional cardiologist and Director of the CCU and Telemetry Units, Outpatient Cardiology Services and the Lipid Program at Stony Brook Medicine, has some suggestions to help you stay heart-safe all summer long. People with an existing heart condition need to be careful with warmer temperatures, but even a healthy heart can be put under stress when temperatures climb. Following are tips for helping to make your summer heartsafe: Hydrate. Adequate hydration is nothing less than your best friend as the summer heat moves in. Drinking plenty of water helps regulate your temperature, helps your heart pump more easily and keeps all your organs functioning properly. Remember to drink before you are thirsty, and avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages, which can dehydrate the body. And, it is important to know that some common heart medications can make you more vulnerable to high heat and increase your hydration needs. Talk to your doctor about your specific hydration needs. Staying Cool. If you don’t have access to air conditioning, cold compresses (an ice-pack or ice-water filled bottle) applied to your ‘pulse points’ — the areas where your veins are closest to your skin’s surface, including wrists, neck, temples and armpits — can help you cool down. Eat Water-Rich Foods. You get about 20 percent of your water from the foods you eat. A hot weather diet that emphasizes cold soups, salads and fruits can both satisfy hunger and provide extra fluid. The partnership will allow the Long Island Flute Studio to offer two need based scholarships for private flute lessons for the upcoming 2021-2022 academic year.
